I am staying at the Albus hotel in March in Amsterdam. So I can't review it yet. However it had great reviews and It's close to everything. If you stay in the "horse shoe" city center of Amsterdam you are walking distance and close to everything. I've been to Amsterdam before and it's a easy walkable city. I never used the train lines but I know they are everywhere. This time I hope to rent a bike to explore.
While in Berlin I stayed at the NH Collection Berlin Mitte am Checkpoint Charlie. It was walking distance to museums and sites and very close to a metro station. They do offer breakfast. I remember eating at a restaurant nearby called Maximilians that was very good. When I was in Berlin it was in-between Christmas and New Years and things were a bit quieter in the city.

Berlin - Circus Hotel in Rosenthaler Platz. It has a tram and underground right in front. I loved the hotel and the location. Tons of shopping & restaurants nearby. There is a restaurant downstairs but the breakfast is not included.
Amsterdam - Hotel La Boheme. Breakfast was included. Restaurants nearby and I walked pretty much everywhere.
We stayed at the Swissotel in Amsterdam and enjoyed it. Ask for a quiet room; they have ones especially designated that and you'll want it because it's right in the heart of everything and walking distance from the train station.
