Anyone on here over in China or was planning to go? How is this affecting you?
My cousin lives just west of Shanghai and everything is shut down. He was able to get out and get enough food for what he thinks is two weeks worth but otherwise he is just hunkering down in his 30 story apartment building.
My brother lives in Shanghai. He left for Taiwan yesterday morning, which is fortunate because flights out of China are getting fewer and farther between and he was afraid Taiwan might ban travelers from China. He's staying with friends in Taipei, and he says it's mostly business as usual there but with everyone wearing masks.
ETA: My brother left more for fear of being stuck in China (or not being able to afford one of the few remaining flights) than fear of the disease itself.

I have a friend with a doctor friend in Wuhan. My friend is trying to subtly convince everyone to stockpile things. Hearing reports from friends in Asia about schools closing until March and countries that are restricting access to anyone that has been to mainland China recently. They don't think that the death toll will be high but are worried about the economic impact to the region and to the world.

The makeup industry is feeling this. Several companies had palettes launch, but haven't been able to deliver due to the palettes being in effected areas in China. (Then there are the idiots that were saying, "I wouldn't put that on my eyes because GERMS!" but hopefully those are just stupid online comment people.)

What is your friend encouraging people to stockpile?
I'm sure the economic impact will be huge. My brother said that the government is encouraging everyone with non-essential jobs to stay home until further notice.
So I know people are dying and this is a humanitarian issues, but I do think it's interesting to see how it's impacting other things like the makeup thing...
I work in Higher Ed and we had a huge intake bump last year for international students and right now all of our projections are completely up in the air for 20/21 because of the impact on Chinese students coming here over summer, our recruiters not being able to get over there. Like we may end up significantly off track because of this.
Spinning off that, if we have to support some students who will arrive late for Summer courses, we're scrambling to find a service that will provide China-proof technology for our online courses and not be blocked by the firewall. We've gotten a slew of salespeople calling with these exact services recently.
We also do classroom renovations every year and our podium supplier sources stuff from China - we don't know if we'll be able to move forward with those changes.

My mom and step dad we’re going to China in April and their trip has been canceled. My step mom is over in the Philippines visiting family right now. I’m wondering if her visit will end up being longer than she expected.

Water, canned food, cash. I think he's crazy - at least for people here in the US right now. I think his wife's family is connected in some way, but he is sending notes out about all factories in Guangdong have been closed by order of government and then non-government people aren't working at all (much like your brother said), plus noting tens of thousands of troops going in to Wuhan. He also said roads into Beijing have been closed.

Stockpiling essentials in the US feels like an overreaction but I do wonder about the accuracy of reports coming out of China and whether it's possible that the situation is much worse than we're hearing. Like I know international media is there and covering the story, but I imagine the government has some control over what they're shown.

We have a flight to Shanghai with China Eastern at the end of March. With Delta canceling out until April, I have a feeling our flights will get canceled eventually.

He says they are hearing that the number affected are 10x-100x what the government is reporting.

But yes, I have no intention to stockpile.
Just to make sure I understand - does he think that the government is actively under-reporting by that magnitude, or that there are that many cases that haven't been officially diagnosed and counted?

That's a big spread! But yes, this is my concern too.
We're flying domestically in a few weeks and I'm not excited to be in airports.

My Uncle lives there, he is supposed to come here in 2 weeks for a wedding. Yesterday he flew to Taipei to stay there the next two weeks so he can ensure that he can leave when the time comes. He is worried about getting back later this month. He said things are getting blow out of proportion by the media and seems pretty annoyed with the whole thing.
Our company has identified the situation as a risk for our business and will not be able to manufacture our product because a large portion of our parts come from China. This is on top of the whole tariff mess.

While I am glad I don't live in Hong Kong anymore, it is mostly because people are losing their minds and not because I would be very afraid of getting sick. Schools will be closed until March AT LEAST, all of the pharmacies are out of face masks, and a lot of people aren't even leaving their apartments if they can help it. HK learned a lot from SARS and actually has a very good public health system, but but from what I've seen on social media people are acting like they are in the middle of an apocalypse.
And to heyjude's point, there is a lot of racist shit going around. I mean, H1N1 was huge in the US, but I don't remember people around the world saying "well that's what those dirty Americans get for eating PORK!!!"
Bigger deal seems to be the gross racism popping up around this illness. No vax for that.
I just saw an article that people are avoiding Chinatown in Philly for fear of coronavirus. You know, a place full of people who LIVE IN THE US. We haven't even had a confirmed case in our state.
There is a lot of misinformation being spread around in my area stating the woman who has it is in (insert location) was at (specific businesses) and to stay away, wear masks, got to the doctor because you’re INFECTED. Blah blah blah
And now that the plane landed yesterday in Ontario, that’s added to the spread of more misinformation. SFO residents didn’t want them to land there so they had to redirect to one of the poorest counties... 🤨
I have to keep calming down my coworkers/friends about it and have them use their critical thinking skills.

If asking why to stockpile in China, my cousin had to do just that. The roads in and out of his town are now closed and no new supplies are arriving for an undetermined amount of time. He is a teacher and his school was already closed due to the new year but now will not be re-opening for at least three weeks but it could be longer.
He was not able to get much at the store because he had placed a large delivery order so he was anticipating that but the roads closed before it came. So he went to the store but most things were gone. He did say he was able to get enough eggs for several weeks worth of egg dishes.
He is a US citizen and could fly home to his parents house (apparently there is some sort of assistance available for citizens to get flights) but he would have a hard time getting to Shanghai he says and thinks the risk Of infection is greater trying to travel than just staying home. Plus he has a pet cat and doesn’t want to leave her. So he is planning to just stay put.
If you’re asking why people in US would stockpile that I have no idea about 🤷🏼♀️

I suspect there is underreporting for a variety of reasons. We do have a confirmed case in my state, but I few it like any other illness that I don't want to get. If I'm traveling by plane- I am wearing a mask. I am washing my hands all.the.time.
The economic impact will be interesting to see long term. MH is having delays for his small business already.

I'm in Thailand and just arrived back "home" (northern Thailand) after a week traveling in other parts of Thailand. I was in Bangkok during new year's, so tons of tourists, mostly Chinese, but also from all over. New year's was a big risk factor.
From my flights in the last 12 hours or so, almost every Asian had masks. Whites were 50/50 at first. My last flight to where I live was about 95% of everyone, but it's also really bad air season (some of the worst in the world) so we wear masks anyway. We've only had about 8 cases confirmed, and only 1 was person-person. In a country of 70M, it's still a relatively low #. But the fear is extremely obvious. In Bangkok, there were thermal scanners everywhere. If I were arriving where I lived int'l there would be a separate lane for Chinese that likely ends in quarantine.
There's some paranoia, some deserved, some very likely xenophobic/racist. I have a very minor cough that's dry but takes over at times especially in the presence of cigarettes or bad air quality, and though I wore my n95, and yes I know it's not as good as a proper respir in a hospital, as our pollution is mostly particulate, I wear it anyway during this season. I know people will look at me differently this year than last year.
My flight today was disinfected the same way they sprayed my planes when flying from parts of Africa to USA. They claimed they were following WHO recs, but I flew 2 airlines, and only 1 airline did/claimed/announced this.
I'm about to sleep for way too many hours, but I'll try to answer questions as it relates to no expertise but to general attitude in this area, and other parts of Thailand as well as in other parts of SE Asia where I have friends. Just anecdote.
