@@@ We are flying domestically with kids this weekend. Maybe I’m in denial, but I’m not worried about coronavirus since we aren’t flying through an international terminal. I am concerned about the flu. We aren’t wearing masks but I’ll probably bring some hand sanitizer (I’m a terrible mom who usually doesn’t carry it 😬) and encourage good hand washing and keeping hands to ourselves. My kids are a bit older, so they are not doing dumb stuff like licking walls for the most part. We are traveling to see my 89 year old, sick FIL, so I’m hoping we don’t pick up any nasty germs and spread them to him.
CallingAllAngels, also bring sanitizing wipes for the surfaces you’ll touch on the plane. I saw a dateline (or was it 20/20?) and airplane seat belt buckles are grooooosssssssssssss

I always wipe down our seats and inevitably, I get weird looks until another passenger asks to borrow a wipe. The seats are NASTY.
@@@ I normally bring Lysol wipes on planes and wipe down our seats, seatbelts, and tray tables before installing the car seat. My husband boards last with our 1 year old.
We fly next week and I just ordered some travel size lysol spray to hit the soft surfaces, like the seat belts, a little better. I’ll ask anyone around me if they mind me using it before I do, but usually our seats are in the way back and all the early boarders are up front. This is more because we’re flying at the height of flu season (to meet my first niece!)
We will not wear masks. A standard procedure mask could reduce droplet transmission risk if used properly. You’d need an N95 to reduce the risk of airborne transmission, which isn’t recommended for air travel right now as linked above.

Please please make sure it’s an unscented product. Both the wipes but especially the spray.
I can’t tell you how many trips I have had ruined by the strong fragrance of someone’s chemical cleaning product giving me a migraine. It really sucks and there is nothing I can do to prevent it.
Affects not only migraine sufferers but those with asthma as well.

I would be one of the people gawking probably. Scented cleaning products make me so so sick and once you’re trapped on the plane with the scent there is nothing that can be done.
Those of you who clean your seats and all with wipes please get unscented ones. Remember that you can choose what you touch and whether or not you wash your hands but those around you can’t choose not to breathe in the scent of your products.

Yes, agree. Most scents make me very nauseated, which is made even worse on a plane since I also get motion sickness.

I don’t know if it was a head to head comparison but I read that the bins you put your luggage in at security are the grossest. I always gag a little when I see people put their suitcase on their bed to unpack. I mean in my mind I know you likely won’t get sick but I just imagine all the poop germs on the bed coverings. I think I literally screeched when my SO tried to do that once and he hasn’t done it since haha.
But yes the rest of the plane is also gross. I don’t sanitize cause my immune system seems to work pretty well and as much as I travel I’ve never gotten sick after a trip, but I always shower after I get off the plane cause it’s like I can feel the germs lol.

Agree with the PPs. Wash your hands often (for the full 20 seconds), wipe down tray tables and seat buckles, and avoid touching your face.
Do wear a mask if you’re at all sick, to avoid spreading anything (Considerate at any time, but with all the quarantine procedures being put in place, a common cold can have potentially huge consequences for some people).
I did wear an FFP3 mask in the Bangkok airport, since I had to be there for 13 hours, they’ve had known cases, and there’s so much international east Asia traffic (though several airlines have canceled all of their China flights). I decided to take it off for my Bangkok-Auckland flight, because I was eating multiple meals on board anyway. I didn’t bother wearing it in Oslo or Auckland.
Honestly, I didn’t find it that hard to breathe aside from one stretch where I was walking quickly and wearing way too warm clothes. The bigger issue for me was that my glasses wouldn’t stay on very well with the mask in place.

Our wipes are unscented but I’m having a hard time finding an unscented spray for more porous surfaces that is TSA compliant. As a migraine sufferer myself this also kills me. If anyone has a recommendation I’d love to hear it!
@@ I definitely can’t control where my 1 year old touches or licks. I wish I could just trust the airlines to disinfect their carriers. We’re 2000 miles from family so air travel is somewhat unavoidable.

Can you put your spray of choice in a travel-sized spray bottle? Target sells them.
Is an airplane really that much worse than any other random thing that we touch, like elevator buttons, etc?
I’m much closer in proximity to people on a plane in coach than I am on an elevator or in a store. So if someone sneezes/coughs they’re much more likely to do it on me.

When I traveled with my kids at that age I wore them. Truthfully they couldn’t really reach anything gross when they were on me. I also just made a point to wipe their hands frequently.

I wash my hands after touching elevator buttons, I have hand sanitizer stations in my building, and on the plane I'm in closer proximity to more people for a longer amount of time than in my office. I can also move away from sick people generally, on a plane you're stuck with them and/or the germs they left behind.
I'm one of those people that bring wipes to clean the tray, arms, etc of the airplane.

I was just at the world archery tournament in Las Vegas. Normally we have quite a few Chinese competitors, but this year their numbers were very down, I think I only saw one and I wondered how the travel ban worked for them. My friend from Japan was there, but we were running in opposite directions so I didn't get to ask him about it. Overall our numbers were slightly down from projected, but still up from prior years. They always do a breakout by country so that will be interesting to see this year.

I don't know if they're doing this on US only flights, but on my domestic Thai flights they announced they were spraying disinfectant once they closed the cabin doors. I didn't smell anything. I also doubt the efficacy, but I doubt that for many of the mass precautions.
I do think I'm as close or closer in an elevator or standing in line. But since droplet is 3 ft spray, it doesn't really matter if I'm 6in or 18, and if it lives on surfaces for any measurable time, it doesn't matter how far I am.
Admittedly I haven't looked recently, but last I heard CDC was not recommending Americans wear masks as it could give a false sense of security when hand hygiene is so important. I don't know if that also applied to flights.

Well I think it depends on your life.
I take a crowded subway multiple times per week and work at a medical facility so obviously am around sick people on a daily basis in my personal and professional life.
If someone lives alone, drives to work and works in a small office that’s not open to the general public then they’re definitely not as exposed to as much nastiness.
But yes there are germs everywhere and luckily in general healthy people have a nice immune system that does it’s job. I think companies have done a great job at marketing to think we need wipes for everything
am I the only person that never touches elevator buttons? I use the sleeve of my coat or my elbow, lol
Me too. A few months ago someone in the elevator saw it and asked me how I broke my arm. It was awkward and weird. I use my elbow, sleeve or my work ID badge.

Lysol is basically aerosol rubbing alcohol (with fragrance), so a small spritz bottle of alcohol could work? A spray bottle of alcohol is what I used around my house for soft surfaces when cleaning for someone immunocompromised.

I try to avoid touching any surfaces that others touch, honestly. I've seen too many people leave the bathroom without hand washing that it grosses me out.

I try to use my sleeve or something if I can, otherwise I always think of one science professor who told a room full of freshmen to use a finger you don't typically use to rub your eye or something. So I'll use my ring finger as a last resort.

I don’t encounter elevators on a daily basis, but I generally try not to touch things like that.
@@@ However, my kids did get sick in the UK & I spent 5hrs in a waiting room. It was not awesome & stressful. Since then, I’m wiping down, hand washing, using sanitizer, etc constantly when traveling.

My goal for 2020 is to never touch a door handle.
Ok, slightly exaggerating my level of anti-germiness, but I do try to avoid touching "high traffic surfaces," especially during cold and flu season by covering my hand with the bottom of my jacket/cardigan, or leaving my gloves on. If I do a bare-handed grab, I try to be mindful to not touch my face until I have had a chance to wash my hands well.
