It seems like music subscriptions are the best way to listen to music, but I want to minimize the number of subscriptions I have. I currently pay for SiriusXM because I like it in my car without messing with my phone. I also listen to the Sirius app while I'm working. Beau pays for Amazon music and I have to say it is nice telling Alexa to play a certain song.
I am admittedly old and stodgy... I have so many things I refuse to pay for and music is one of them. I use a combo of Pandora and Amazon Music (free version). If there is a specific song I want to hear that's not available for free, it's free on youtube.

I hate paying for music too. I use the free version of the Amazon app since I have purchased a lot of music from them over the years, especially for my Zune MP3 player (anyone remember the Zune MP3 player failure?). But I hate ads, even on YouTube. And even YouTube has a paid version to avoid ads. I think the biggest thing about music subscriptions that bothers me is you have access and can download until you don't pay for it anymore. Whereas when you buy the song, it's yours forever.
I pay for the Amazon Music subscription. We have Alexa devices all over the house, I can use it on my phone in the car, and I listen at work at my desk sometimes too.
I have free Amazon music and I get free Apple Music through Verizon. I may keep the Apple Music when the free part runs out. It has a ton of good music.
At work on my headphones, I do the free Amazon music, my music that I’ve paid for thru Apple, and iHeartRadio. IHeartRadio is actually pretty good variety and not too many commercials. You can’t pick specifics as much as the other two, but sometimes that’s what I prefer.
ETA: iHeartRadio is free
In the car I do the radio or play my purchased music thru the aux
I don't love ads, but I don't hate them. They are providing a service, and I will gladly "pay" for them by wasting 30 seconds on a (usually very repetitive) ad vs. paying out of pocket for them. Pandora ads are the worst because it's usually the same 30 second Honda ad over and over again, and Youtube's are the best, since it's usually 5 seconds until you can skip it.
I only listen to the radio and only on the way to work in the mornings because H doesn’t like the radio and DS drives with me so I let him pick what he wants during the drive home, which is to watch a DVD in the car.
ETA if i needed something on my phone I would use IHeartRadio since its free. We have a lifetime Sirius subscription from the olden days when they used to sell such a thing so that is also mapped to my car but we don’t use it often.
We use the Amazon music paid subscription. My mom gifts it to us for Christmas each year. We have Alexa devices all over the house and I use it at work as well.
I recently switched from amazon to Spotify pro. Amazon somehow upgraded to the family plan without me authorizing it (probably asked one of my kids for permission!) which annoyed me. Also, Siri supports voice control now for Spotify (but unfortunately only in online mode I’ve since learned) which is nice for my car. We listen to music constantly. I could never afford to buy a CD for every single thing that I listen to, and I love the freedom of requesting whatever I want! Everything is linked through Alexa and Sonos so we can ask for anything in any room of our house (we have like 7 sonos speakers I think). I also have Sirius in my car but I’m currently in a trial period. On the regular FM radio, I cannot stand listening to music channels due to all the commercials so I strictly listen to NPR.
