I need some thoughts on if I should add a border or sashing on these unicorn blocks. They are 26” each finished and are made with an indigo Essex linen with gold metallic thread as the block background.
I’m planning on placing all three side by side to make a large wall hanging for above my daughter’s bed. Would you add sashing? If so, more metallic linen, black or white? Something colourful?
Here is the original quilt pattern photo and my blocks:
I think you need some sashing and a border around it. Put them next to each other on your design wall and then spread them out with gaps to mimic white sashing. I can’t decide if black or white would look best, but it wouldn’t need to be very wide, maybe 1”? What color wall is it hanging on? You could also do a pieced binding with the colors from all three to make it a fun edge.

I don’t have enough space to place them side by side. Ultimately, the wall will be colourful. We’re planning on painting kind of colourful geometric diamonds or triangles in the pink, purple and aqua colours on the wall. The rest of the room is a light grey.
I agree that I need something. I have extra of the background fabric, white, and really anything.

Oooh. Maybe I’ll do one inch sashing and borders in Essex Navy. It would tie into the indigo background but look much darker. Her bedding is navy so that’s really the neutral in the room. I would do a facing instead of a binding to finish since it’s a wall hanging.
I think the facing would work, as long as there is sashing around the outside too. The more I think about it, each unicorn is like a portrait, so they should have their own frame/edge. Like a multiple opening picture frame. At a min. I would do sashing on the sides. You could maybe get away without any on the top/bottom.
