I’m new to knitting, but really enjoying it. Crafting in general is totally new to me, but I’m finding it really relaxing and I’m loving that I am actually creating something functional and somewhat attractive. For my birthday this year, I want to ask for a project bag for my knitting so I can take it along with me in something more than a reusable shopping bag. My husband has asked for direction on this, but I’m not sure what to tell him. What size do you look for? Any features you would want/not want? Is just a canvas tote bag thing what most people use? So far, I’m at the knit a hat/scarf/dishcloth stage, but I have no idea where it will take me later.
I think this is really personal and dependent on what kind of projects you plan to make.
I generally knit fairly small projects (up to three balls of yarn at most) and mostly do it while sitting as a passenger in the car. I also exclusively knit with circulars which are not nearly as large as sticks. I have a small lined fabric bag with a drawstring at the top to secure everything inside and keep it clean and from falling out when I toss the bag wherever. Unfortunately I sewed it myself but it was based on this tutorial:
You want a zip or drawstring. At least one extra pocket. Size is going to depend on what you knit and how you read your pattern. In other words, a digital pattern you only need a bag as big as the tablet, but if you have a paper pattern or a book you need to be able to put that in the bag as well. Plus socks are small and portable, but if you're knitting a sweater or blanket you need more room.
