Our company has decided everyone is overreacting and this is really all NBD. Have I mentioned how shitty my company is?
I’m supposed to go to Seattle in 2 weeks. They can go to hell. I’m not going anywhere if I can help it. I’m certainly not going to Seattle.
One of the conferences H is supposed to be a vendor at in the near future is offering people who book after March 1 a “you can cancel for free later if you’re uncomfortable.” The people who booked a year ago? Full cancellation fees. WTAF.

This is where we are at with flights. Airlines will let you cancel/change for flights you booked this week, but not flights that you booked earlier FOR this week. Total BS.
I just told my boss I’m not going to Seattle. He said he’s making the same decision and he’s supportive. We are supposed to go together on April 1 for a fairly big meeting. We are asking the hosting group if they’re planning to cancel.
mommyatty that totally makes sense. I am supposed to attend two conferences in April - one on the 1st and one at the end of the month. Luckily both are driving distance (in LA). I'm assuming both are going to be cancelled but we'll see.

Over a month ago I booked an overnight trip to Seattle and made reservations to a fancy steakhouse for my birthday in a couple weeks. I'm waiting until a few days before to see how this plays out before cancelling. I'm kind of bummed that I may have to cancel. But by then, the virus will probably have moved north to my area.
DD1 has high anxiety about certain things, and she is LASER FOCUSED on those things at all times.
Lately, coronavirus is the source of her anxiety. And while I also have anxiety, this is not a source for me. Her teacher (a healthy 20-something currently training for a marathon) has the kids all spun up about it.
I was replacing the antibacterial wipes/Purell that I keep in the kids lunch boxes (they have recess right before lunch, no hand washing opportunity, they always have wipes because their hands are filthy after recess), and DH yelled “CORONA IS COMING FOR YOU!!!”
WTF DH? I screamed, “NO ITS NOT SHUT UP ITS JUST A COLD!”
I’m sending DD1 to find him when she starts spiraling.
Well, DH got a text alert on Saturday from his company saying that effective immediately, all non-essential business travel is suspended. DH was supposed to leave this morning for a small conference/training in New Orleans. So he had to cancel his flight and hotel, and is kind of bummed he isn't going because he's never been to New Orleans.
We're supposed to leave for Spring Break in Disney World in 24 days... I really hope we're still able to go.
73-year-old MIL was supposed to fly cross country tomorrow from the DC area to visit for a week, and she just cancelled her trip. On the one hand I’m excited to not have to host her for a week and have our routine disrupted, but I do like her and I’m sad for my kids because they haven’t spent any real time with her in a long time. I also think coronavirus is only going to spread further, so it may be awhile before she can plan another trip. It’s pretty clear that FIL pushed her to cancel - which makes sense because he’s older and has more health issues.

If you had free tickets to see Lizzo at the rodeo (a huge concert surrounded by masses of humanity who are also there for the carnival and animal shows), would you go? Asking for a friend....
Also, if your sister only living sister was going to go with you but she only has one lung due to having lung cancer in the past....what would you do then assuming she's planning on going with you....
mustardseed2007 , if it were someone I liked (I assume said friend likes Lizzo, I am not a huge fan) I might go if it were just me and someone equally healthy. I would not go with my sister under those circumstances.
covergirl82 we’re supposed to be at Disney at the same time as you, I think. Unless they close the parks, we’re definitely going.
Fun! I'll be googling and checking my My Disney Experience app daily from here on to see if there are any announcements about the parks closing. (I'm also worried about regional travel restrictions/the government preventing our travel.)
Just in case (because I'm a planner), I just reviewed our reservations, and we have trip insurance for our flights and DVC rental, but our park tickets (which we bought through Undercover Tourist) say 'non-refundable' (so I may need to call and see if that only applies to cancellations, or if we can change the dates and not lose out on that $$$) and I need to check to see how it works if we need to cancel or change our reservation for the 2 extra nights we booked through Disney.
Last week, they ended up cancelling the Mother/Son dance that was on Friday evening. Today, DD came in and let me know that most of the kids were upset, but they're happier now because the school announced that it wasn't cancelled, it was just "Post Malone'd" and I died.
mae0111, tell her it's been Post Malone'd instead. At least then you'll laugh, even if she doesn't.
But in all seriousness, my 7 year old can understand why things are being cancelled. She may not be happy about it, but promse her a symphony trip in the future once things are settled down.
Work is working on their disaster planning for coronavirus. We have multiple alternate worksites in the event of a physical catastrophy, but not for something where going to an alternate worksite isn't an option. According to my boss, only like 20 people even have the capacity to work remotely which... explains a lot about how things operate around here.
sdlaura, I am terrified that they'll try to get an extra few hundred people access to work remotely and it will shut the whole system down. I tried explaining how our remote system works to DH (who is VERY technical and works in that kind of world) and he was just floored.. "Wait? You what? That doesn't make sense, you're describing it wrong." No buddy, I'm not. Pretty sure our VPN was developed about the same time as fire was discovered.
k3am, this is actually happening in China and Japan. Well not sure on VPN, but internet and signals in general are overloaded. If there is a lockdown, not sure my boss cares if I am not getting lots of work done.
I got here Saturday for prep, corporate cancelled it all on Sunday before anyone else arrived. So I've been un planning a giant international trip for the past few days with my two colleagues from our hotel room. It went surprisingly well, pretty smooth overall. I fly home tomorrow. Wish me luck.
School just sent out an email saying that someone in the “extended community” of our school has a confirmed case. I assume this means like... not a student but maybe a family member that lives with the student?
ETA: also that non excused absences would not be counted against the kids. My first though was.. damn, I can’t get off work, this would be a great time to ski.
