Our kitchen project started off great. Contractor did demo, electrician and plumber both came on time and did their thing... and the contractor stopped showing up. The last time he was here was on Monday. He showed up, did 2 hours of work, and left. He has not been back since. Every day he would text saying he was coming, keep pushing back his arrival time, and not show.
He texted Thursday morning saying he would be here by 9am, then 10:30, then 1pm. Then he stopped responding to us. We haven’t heard from him since. He said earlier in the week that he would 100% be here today to do the one piece of the project that is holding things up. But he’s not here, and we can’t find him.
We’ve paid him more than we should have, and will have to sue to get the money back. It’s significant enough that a lawsuit would be worth it. In reading the regulations for contractors in our state, he’s broken several laws by the way he approached everything. Wish I read everything before signing.
I’m so disappointed. We’ve worked with him several times in the past for big and small projects, and this has never been an issue. He and his crew always showed up every day until the project was done.
Our state does not seem to have a timeframe for abandonment published anywhere, but would you consider this to be abandonment?
I would. I would also let him know to expect a lawsuit. I'd file with the Better Business Bureau. Also, you may want to check into his licensing agency to see if there are violations there. Plus planning and zoning since he should have gotten a permit for the work. If I was mad enough, I wouldn't be above putting him on blast warning others.
rere, oh definitely putting him on blast. We have reached out in all forms today (phone, email, text) to let him know that if we don’t eat from him today, we will assume he has abandoned the job and we will be contacting an attorney to get back the excess payment.
He has left a bunch of tools and equipment here, but I’m sure he has duplicates of everything - it’s all cheap stuff. Still, we probably won’t allow access until we have a cashiers check in hand.
I’m sorry. We had a bathroom reno that went terribly wrong, but at least it finished. It took 14 weeks vs the quoted 4-6 and there were many days no one showed or only worked 20 mins but at least they answered calls.
Is he a solo operation? Anyone above him you can contact? Otherwise I’d proceed with abandonment, I’m sorry. Our neighbor friends started a kitchen Reno in October and are just now waiting on final inspections. They had a bad project manger but even the main company didn’t step in soon enough to replace him. There were while weeks they wouldn’t sho or only work for a few minutes, very frustrating, sorry you’re in the same boat with a in-useable kitchen.
