I honestly thought this was about the man in Zanesville, OH who released all of his animals and now I am wondering just how many of these people exist.
That story was SO fucked. All of those poor animals.

I thought it was going to be about the man in Colton, CA who was supposedly running a tiger rescue but turned out to be badly abusing them.

Joe is awful. He targets much younger men who are in dire straits and coerces them to have sexual relationships with him. You can tell from the body language of all three of them that they were not in to him at all. Carol sucks but I’m really surprised that people are having a more visceral reaction to her than Joe, who is shooting guns off at people and engaged in some really scary behavior on camera. I’m not totally clear whether she killed her husband just given how wild this entire series has been. But her story is def suspect.
There’s also a chance her husband was doing some shady shit with the car dealings in Miami and got killed in that situation. Regardless, I agree about Joe.

For me, at least, a part of it is that with Joe, what you see is what you get. He's CRAZY and I was shocked every episode but... at the same time, I wasn't' surprised. If that makes sense.
With her - she's quieter, well spoken, is working for good, seems "normal", but there is clearly something off there that's a bit disconcerting. With Joe, you can put your finger on his crazy. With her, you can't. And that kind of scares me more!

there are 5,000 - 10,000 tigers in captivity in the US.
So ... a lot. 😳
Great Scott, that's more than are left in the wild.

Oh yeah, Carol is batshit. She is that scary kind of batshit that is super sweet to you but then turns on you in the creepiest scariest way.

I agree with this assessment! You put into words what my brain could not. Lol
I’m at the end of epi 3. I hate all of them at this point.
What’s up with the person who claimed they had a functioning arm/hand to sign their name at the hospital after it was clearly shown on video it was bitten off at the “zoo”. Plus you can hear them saying “the arms off” after the incident and then he tries to cover it up by saying the arm got caught on the chain link fence.
Also these music videos are so awful and cringe I’m skipping through them.

**** gross spoiler ***
I heard someone say that the skin was torn off her arm. I suspect the tiger did serious damage and in the craziness, people thought the arm was torn off but it wasn’t. So - in the hospital, she still had use of the hand. But her decision to get it amputated just to prove she was ok and to get back to work? Weird.
And that story/ lack of clarification of what happened annoyed me throughout. There is a LOT that i felt needed better clarification.

There’s only one quasi-redeeming quality about Joe, and it’s a stretch though. Joe seemed to be the only person who would give the ex-cons a chance at a job and life...not that the life is good, eating meat off an expired food truck or paying them $100 a month, but a job and a chance to at least be alive.

Yes, there is a small glimmer of something good. But at the same time, while it wasn't really talked about a lot - Joe also drew people in (his husbands!) with drugs. And if he REALLY wanted to help these ex-cons, he'd pay them a living wage.

But I wonder ...
Yes that gave them the opportunity to create a new life but how much of his choice was about control. Those ex-cons couldn't walk away - they had no other choices, especially in that area - so he only had to pay them 100$ a month. And it was a booze and drug fueled environment. It seems like almost everyone was on meth that Joe was providing.
I dunno, I see it similar to the 'boyfriends' - he was creating an environment where people couldn't leave and thought they didn't want to ...
ETA: Also that head zookeeper guy - the one with the long blond hair. He broke my heart. For the first 6 episodes - the cuts he did in a backyard - he seemed like the only reasonable together guy. And then in that last episode with him strung the fuck out and all the vodka bottles. Man. I just wanted to give all of those guys a long hug.

Yes!! I thought the same thing. He seemed to kind of has his shit together but then, nope.

Exactly, Joe preyed on workers just like he preyed on potential boyfriends. He wasn’t give them a second chance out of the goodness of his heart. He did it so he would have control. Shit, a person gets their arm ripped off and they’re begging to come back to work. There’s a reason behind it.

I think she said they told her it would be 2 years of surgery (and probably intense occupational therapy) to have normal function. And she decided that was too much for her and to make the best of her life with an amputated arm. Maybe she didn't have insurance. Or maybe she just decided that was the right choice for her. It sounds weird like "why wouldn't you want to save your arm? Your arm!!!" but I totally get it. I don't have normal functioning in both of my hands anymore due to a rare disease. At this point, I really don't care if there was a miracle cure out there that would bring me back to "normal." I've adapted and I'm ok with it. But others who haven't been through it absolutely never understand it.
ETA - she's not the only one missing an arm. I caught a glimpse of someone in the background in a later episode also missing a forearm. I'm on episode 6 so it was before that.
Yeah Erik made me super sad. That interview where he was really messed up killed me. I hope he’s doing ok. He seemed like he was really trying to help the animals in such an awful situation.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean she should or shouldn’t have done everything to save her hand/arm. The footage I saw, while blurry, showed to me what looked like the animal had bitten her hand off already. I thought a lot of what she (and the rest of them) was saying was a lie to save Jo from the media about the incident and take blame off the animal for her loosing her arm.
