I have seen stats ranging from 20-30%. I think the rate varies so much because some states are just able to do more tests. So it's probably 30% in Georgia because they are only testing the people with the most severe symptoms. I don't know why it is that NY seems to have been able to do more tests than any other state, but I believe their hospital rate is around 20%, give or take.
Thank you! I wish numbers were reported more easily. I feel like more people would take the social distancing more seriously if we keep harping on the hospitalization rate. I know it's not a perfect number since only the most severe cases are tested right now, but it still shows just how many are admitted to the hospital and there are only so many beds to go around. Atlanta metro is at max capacity from what I've heard.
I agree. The hospitalization rate needs to be talked about way more. Too many people are focused on the 1-2% death rate, which is still pretty horrific, but I feel like if more people understood that they had a 25% chance of landing in a hospital, they'd take this thing more seriously. The other problem with the death rate is that people don't seem to understand that it people get diagnosed and often don't die until weeks later. So we don't actually know the death rate right now. Hospitalization rates and ICU rates are real stats that we know.

AYFKM?
I think he's going to do this act for as long as the numbers can be manipulated to make it appear as though its a blue state city thing. But the dam is going to break.
I have no idea what he'll do when the body count gets so high that he runs out of lies to tell, but I'm concerned that it's going to be even scarier than what is currently happening.
How is it that our death rate is so much lower than Italy and China? Is it because it's more spread across the country?
It might be that we’re just seeing a surge in cases so the deaths will occur in a little while. It can take a relatively long time to die from this disease.
How is it that our death rate is so much lower than Italy and China? Is it because it's more spread across the country?
Mostly because because we haven't had it as long. It takes normally 2-4 weeks from onset of symptoms to death. Not many Americans have died of it yet, but also not many have recovered. So far we also have more hospital beds available per sick person than Italy, which means right now we can care for our sick better. But again, that's a matter of still being at the beginning of all this, as we probably have many people who are sick and not yet tested, plus many exposed and incubating the virus but not yet sick.

Just to add to this, China has 74,000 recovered cases, Italy has over 10,000 recovered cases, and the US has under 2,000 recovered cases. We're earlier in the cycle than China or Italy, so we're still waiting for our death rate to increase. It's going to get really bad in the already swamped hospitals.
“Chinese President Xi Jinping has been on a telephone spree this month, dialing the leaders of coronavirus-battered France, Italy, Spain and Germany with offers of support, including masks and other medical equipment. One phone number he hasn’t tried is Donald Trump’s.”

Here’s the thing that gets me about the numbers. It’s taking like 5-8 days to get results. At least here in MD. So, is that really the number of cases we had a week ago, not today?

Exactly. Virginia hospitals put out a bulletin today that test results will take 10 days now.

Yes. And in my state, some people have died before their tests came back positive.

Results for some hospitals are speeding up at least, I have a former neighbor who had to be hospitalized Monday at one of the Johns Hopkins facilities and she received her positive results within a day.

I know IL is working toward having in-hospital testing within the next few weeks. Our area hospitals put out a joint press release daily. The past 2 days, they’ve been sharing how long results take at this point. Tests run via the Illinois department of health are 1-2 days, results using private labs are 4-6 days.

That’s great! Although, JH did develop their own test and probably doing it in house. I know 3 people tested at the end of last week who still don’t have results. Two on Montgomery and one in Harford.

In addition to what others have said, China and Italy have older populations than the US so that could be contributing some as well.
This requires more data analysis than I'm probably capable of but Japan has a larger percentage of older folks, a dense population, yet lower diagnosed cases and deaths.
White House was all set yesterday to announce a deal on accelerated ventilator production w GM. Then suddenly, the deal was off. Among the concerns said to have been cited by the Colonel at FEMA working on it? The pricetag and whether they would end up with an expensive surplus of ventilators. The pricetag would be just over $1 bill for duration of deal.

New York City EMS received 6,406 medical 911 calls yesterday. It was the highest volume ever recorded in the city, surpassing the record that had been set on Sept. 11, 2001
He was given the go-ahead by the British gov't ahead of already existing ventilator companies in the UK because he's a Tory donor/Brexiter. We do not like him and his like.
