I hope he recovers because the alternatives are worse, but fuck him. He breathed about shaking the hands of those with the virus and could be doing/ have done more about it. He'll get fabulous care while screwing others.
Several members of the Navy aboard an aircraft carrier tested positive for the virus.
This article is informative and terrifying. I admit I hadn’t thought about its impact in the military but this really seems to lay out a lot of the risks.
Did this come up this week? The governor of MS overrode local ordinances shutting down dine-in restaurants and non-essential businesses and told everyone to stay open, essentially.
Widespread aggressive testing seems to be a key component of managing the spread. I wish the US would take some lessons from this, but with Trump determined to downplay everything it seems unlikely.

My sister lives there and works in a chain restaurant. It’s been dead even without SIP orders. She gets to keep her job at 70% pay and make all the food and offer takeout service with only one other worker. Corporate seems to believe they can clear $15k in revenue for the week and the day before they said that, the restaurant made $900 for the day. And her governor thinks they can pray this away.
Basically, she expects the restaurant to shut down entirely soon and the fact that she’s considering leaving and coming here TO the epicenter of this disease to stay with family says all you need to know.l about the shitshow down there.
Things are getting bad in Virginia now, even with proactive measures in place. About 50% of detected cases are in 20-49 year olds (!!!). Cases have doubled since Tuesday and death rate has doubled. Hospitalization rate has gone down a bit though.
A friend is a PCP and she said area hospitals have been pretty ok up until now, but expects the system to get stressed over the weekend. A lot of medium and large workplaces still aren’t at 100% mandatory telework.

I don't understand why we are still so far behind on testing. I read a piece on Telluride, CO, where a wealthy biotech exec is finding full immunoglobulin tests of the town (will be able to tell who has had it), and they said they still didn't have results from the standard tests taken 8+ days ago.
Widespread testing can re-open the economy! Who wouldn't want that?

This is what I don't get! If Trump wants to re-open by Easter, the only way we get there is by testing!
Governor Whitmer of Michigan (whom Trump has been attacking lately because she said she has asked for federal assistance and was told to get supplies on our own)
"What I've gotten back is that vendors with whom we've procured contracts -- They're being told not to send stuff to Michigan," Whitmer said live on air. "It's really concerning, I reached out to the White House last night and asked for a phone call with the president, ironically at the time this stuff was going on."
RI has started too top cars with NY plates as they enter the state. I don't know if they are being questioned, if names are being taken so they can be checked in on, or what. But at least something is happening.
CT has announced that they are considering a similar move.
A lot of people from NYC have beach homes in CT & RI. They have been coming up here and not quarantining. They are moving their families from the city to their vacation homes, and going into local grocery stores, etc., ignoring the 14 day quarantine order. Not good. CT has become a real hotspot.
John Kerry @johnkerry Breaking news: Congressman Massie has tested positive for being an asshole. He must be quarantined to prevent the spread of his massive stupidity. He's given new meaning to the term #Masshole. (Finally, something the president and I can agree on!)

How does he still manage to shock me? I should be used to this by now, but when I think he's hit bottom, he still manages to find ways to go even lower.

Jeebus. I can’t even articulate my rage against Trump. I know he has been attacking Gov Inslee for weeks, and now it looks like anyone who doesn’t drink his koolaid is on the attack list.

My stepmoms neighbors have done that. One set live in Atlanta, the other in St Pete, FL. Both have come to TN to wait it out. But at least they are quarantining. Or at least she in quarantining from them. She says she’ll talk to them from the street. But that’s it. All in theirs 60s or 70s. Friends for 40 years.

NJ, too. Our governor has been asking people to please stay in the primary homes and not inundate the shore area because our hospitals simply can’t handle the load, nor can grocery stores and other critical infrastructure that hasn’t ramped up for summer.
Yup. And then I hear all the rage--but we pay taxes on those homes and to use the beaches. The worst. Ugh
It’s infuriating. And I hear all kinds of excuses that frankly don’t matter when our hospitals have far less equipment and smaller staff than hospitals in North Jersey.
I grew up in a beach town in Maine, and they are having the same problem. Lots of people from out of state are relocating this week and going all over town to do their shopping. It's really scary. Maine can't handle in influx in cases just because people don't want to remain in Boston, NYC, etc.
Our friends have a house in Florida but they went there for spring break and having some work finished on their house right before things kind of blew up. They’ve stayed there since and I guess they are debating what to do now. They rent their place out and their 4/4 renters haven’t canceled yet (but I’m guessing they will as all the beaches are closed). So they’ve been there for 2.5ish weeks now? Their son has asthma and bad allergies and frankly I think they should just stay. He’s always totally clear when they are there and struggles when home (our area is terrible for allergies). We don’t have a ton of cases here yet but 5 or so days ago was when everyone came back in town from spring break so who the hell knows. So many people still traveled.

I don’t even understand fleeing when we all know no place is immune from this. Plus, even with our crisis, if I get sick I’d still rather get sick here because I’d we are having problems with hospital beds, everyplace else may be worse off. Fuck anyone fleeing to towns that can’t handle the influx. Yeah they pay taxes but they’ve been content until now to only pay taxes at a location they use for a quarter of the year so miss me with that nonsense.

So this is an intriguing piece. The Diplomat, from what I can find out, is a reputable source. China lost a huge number of mobile and landline subscribers in the past couple of months. It is extremely, extremely strange for telecom providers to report a loss of mobile and landline subscribers during an event like this. Emergencies and disasters mean that everyone wants/needs to use networks. In Italy, in the U.S., everywhere I have seen data from, network usage is UP. By a lot. Voice calling in the U.S. is up about 30% from usual, for example, and we haven't even done the kind of harsh lock-down measures that China put in place.
From the story: "China’s COVID-19 infection numbers are likely much higher than previously stated based on pictures, videos, and leaked documents indicating a much different picture. For example, a considerable drop in mobile phone usage in China is telling of a possible difference in official Chinese statistics of COVID-19 infections and deaths, and those who have actually contracted the virus. One might reasonably expect to see an increase in mobile phone and landline usage by citizens, especially in times of quarantine and lockdown, not a decrease. Yet in China mobile phone and landline usage decreased by over 21 million and 840,000 users, respectively. Meanwhile, the mortality rate in Italy (approximately 9 percent) suggests that the numbers (not including asymptomatic cases) in China are seriously misrepresented."
Those China subscriber numbers are official and were released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which handles the usual reports on this kind of stuff. Chinese carriers haven't seen these kind of losses ever, that I can remember.
This is total speculation on my part, but that level of loss says something major is going on, and not driven by normal consumer behavior. Yes, some people must have abruptly cancelled service because they couldn't afford it when everything shut down. But I suspect it also reflects some government efforts to reduce people's ability to communicate what was going on, especially when photos and other stuff started to get out, and some of those numbers may also reflect deaths that haven't been reported.
