"Over 600 movie theaters across China were given the green light to reopen their doors over the past week, but Beijing's Film Bureau put out a notice late Friday ordering all theaters to go back into shutdown.
No official explanation for the sudden reversal was provided. Industry insiders instantly began speculating that the government was worried about a potential second wave of coronavirus infections.
The decision comes as a shock given the signals authorities had been sending as recently as a day ago. On Thursday, Shanghai's municipal government announced that 205 of the city's movie theaters had received permission to resume business on Saturday. Earlier in the week, China Film Group, the dominant state-backed distributor, unveiled a plan to let cinemas rerelease past blockbusters to help lure customers back into seats."
So this is an intriguing piece. The Diplomat, from what I can find out, is a reputable source. China lost a huge number of mobile and landline subscribers in the past couple of months. It is extremely, extremely strange for telecom providers to report a loss of mobile and landline subscribers during an event like this. Emergencies and disasters mean that everyone wants/needs to use networks. In Italy, in the U.S., everywhere I have seen data from, network usage is UP. By a lot. Voice calling in the U.S. is up about 30% from usual, for example, and we haven't even done the kind of harsh lock-down measures that China put in place.
From the story: "China’s COVID-19 infection numbers are likely much higher than previously stated based on pictures, videos, and leaked documents indicating a much different picture. For example, a considerable drop in mobile phone usage in China is telling of a possible difference in official Chinese statistics of COVID-19 infections and deaths, and those who have actually contracted the virus. One might reasonably expect to see an increase in mobile phone and landline usage by citizens, especially in times of quarantine and lockdown, not a decrease. Yet in China mobile phone and landline usage decreased by over 21 million and 840,000 users, respectively. Meanwhile, the mortality rate in Italy (approximately 9 percent) suggests that the numbers (not including asymptomatic cases) in China are seriously misrepresented."
Those China subscriber numbers are official and were released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which handles the usual reports on this kind of stuff. Chinese carriers haven't seen these kind of losses ever, that I can remember.
This is total speculation on my part, but that level of loss says something major is going on, and not driven by normal consumer behavior. Yes, some people must have abruptly cancelled service because they couldn't afford it when everything shut down. But I suspect it also reflects some government efforts to reduce people's ability to communicate what was going on, especially when photos and other stuff started to get out, and some of those numbers may also reflect deaths that haven't been reported.
John Kerry @johnkerry Breaking news: Congressman Massie has tested positive for being an asshole. He must be quarantined to prevent the spread of his massive stupidity. He's given new meaning to the term #Masshole. (Finally, something the president and I can agree on!)
Love this but I'm surprised at the use of language. I realize Trump isn't above swearing, but that had been pretty unusual in a public forum. I guess if anything is going to push an established statesman to swear on the record, this is it.
Governor Whitmer of Michigan (whom Trump has been attacking lately because she said she has asked for federal assistance and was told to get supplies on our own)
"What I've gotten back is that vendors with whom we've procured contracts -- They're being told not to send stuff to Michigan," Whitmer said live on air. "It's really concerning, I reached out to the White House last night and asked for a phone call with the president, ironically at the time this stuff was going on."

We (here in NOLA - Orleans Parish) have the highest per capita COVID death rate in the U.S. I suspect it will only keep getting worse as our hospitals get more overwhelmed.
Louisiana as a whole has 2,746 positive cases and 119 dead as of today. Our death toll was in the 40's just 3 days ago. I asked a friend who is an ER doc at our largest hospital in the city what he thinks the real infection numbers might be and he said perhaps 20,000 in NOLA alone. And that was like 5 days ago. And purely speculation on his part, but still. Not great.
Yeah he seems to have an issue with Mary Barra and "this" GM. Wonder why? He's such an idiot.
GM and suppliers are putting people to work (isn't that what he wants) and wants to actually pay them for their work, but they are supposed to snap their fingers and produce 40,000 ventilators in 48 hours at no cost. Did I already say he's an idiot?

Yeah I was reading it to H and said "What does that even mean? Does GM have a female CEO right now or something?"
And then I googled and said "welp that explains it."
Yessss House passed package #3 despite Massie’s idiocy. I’m so glad they didn’t have to call everyone back.
Do you know if AOC voted for it? Not that it really matters, but I'm waiting for the 2 Trumpers on my FB feed to complaint about her and Nancy Pelosi instead of a-hole Massie.
This is not a great article for those with anxiety fyi.
This is really scary because I've had this sympton. We were in CO from 3/2-7 and on 3/13 I noticed I couldn't smell anything, I could taste but it was definitely off. I haven't had any other symptoms. My doctor told me to continue to quarantine and contact her if I had any other symptoms develop. This is the end of my second week in quarantine. I've got one more week of WFH as of right now.
Has anyone seen anything in the news about the plan in US to start testing for antibodies? I can only find articles from the UK about how they're going to start selling at home testing kits, that way people who had it but were asymptomatic can reenter society and we can get a full scope of how many people have been infected.

I’m sure she did. I actually didn’t follow whether they passed via unanimous consent or needed a roll call, so there may not be individual votes to count.
Not to harsh. I want him to get the worst possible case, then be denied a ventilator.
Well, the odds are not in his favor. The few papers on cancer and covid are confounded my non-small cell lung cancer (I.e., the smoker type). And it’s brutal on those.
Sadly, they are reporting the results as applicable to all cancers.

I feel really dumb asking this but when I google, I feel like I still don't understand.
I keep reading that the stimulus checks are advances of refundable credits for 2020. What does that mean? Even the "easier" explanation on forbes has me confused. Will refunds be less next year? What if you usually don't get a refund? Do you have to withhold more next year? I'm really sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm overwhelmed with trying to learn how to teach my special education students online and my parents had to shut down their hair salon and it's their only source of income. And I feel like I don't understand tax speak so I don't understand what I'm reading.
I don’t even understand fleeing when we all know no place is immune from this. Plus, even with our crisis, if I get sick I’d still rather get sick here because I’d we are having problems with hospital beds, everyplace else may be worse off. Fuck anyone fleeing to towns that can’t handle the influx. Yeah they pay taxes but they’ve been content until now to only pay taxes at a location they use for a quarter of the year so miss me with that nonsense.
I completely understand it. It’s so much easier to social distance in a house where you can drive in your own car if you have to go somewhere and have little to no interaction with anyone. It’s practically impossible in the city. We try desperately to keep 6’ from people but there are always people who don’t care and walk down the middle of the sidewalk. Because of this, @@@@my kids haven’t been outside in 5 days.
All that said, it’s still selfish as hell and dangerous and awful. I just understand it.

read this article all the way through, it explains it pretty clearly.
Yes, because there's definitely no experience, expertise, or credentials required to work at the CDC.
If health experts are the enemy, then feel free to forgo your cancer treatments, Rush.
So what are your credentials Rush? Medical school? PhD? Years of peer reviewed journals and post-docs? Tenure track position at a research I university?

My ILs have a second house they use on the weekends and they've been there for a week now. My BIL lives with them in their city apartment and is a hospital admin. They left the city when his office mate tested positive and they were waiting for BIL's results. I get it that the smaller towns have less health infrastructure, but a blanket ban is problematic too. I know, everyone has excuses and exceptions why it's ok for them and only them, which is obviously unreasonable. But it sucks either way.

Which, if they had it (and presumably if your BIL had it then he had already spread it to them), then they took it with them. To a place that may or may not have already had it, and they started spreading it there. Which is why you (general) stay the fuck home.

Yeah that is true. This is one time I would be a little grateful to live in a suburb and have a car. It's hard to stock up when you're carrying groceries alone. When I went alone 2 weeks ago I took the bus back home because it was also raining and it's only about 8 blocks to the store but I obviously bought more than I typically buy so my arms were tired! I wish I could just get in the car, go to the grocery store and just load up and be good to go.
