I have a cheap ($250) pro-form bike that I had long before Peloton was even a thing. I only ride with instructors who ride to the beat of the music, so I haven't even bothered to get a cadence sensor. I rely on my heart rate monitor to gauge my exertion, though, because I was used to doing that in spin class at the gym before these fancy bikes existed.
Reading what I just wrote makes me feel both cheap and old
Mine isn’t super cheap, but I love my nordictrack s15i bike. Can do trail rides, and riding through other states and countries is helping me feel less cooped up.
Do "upright" stationary bikes work for Peloton rides or does it have to be a spin style bike? (I found some folding upright bikes which would work much better for my tiny house.)
I love my IC3 from Schwinn. However I do plan to upgrade to the IC4.
I have been looking to get the IC4 but can't find it in stock anywhere. As a beginning spinner, do you think the IC3 is fine? It is in stock at my nearest Dick's for $599 right now.

Absolutely, more than fine. It's a great bike, just doesn't have some of the bells and whistles of the IC4 but nothing that stops me from getting a great workout in.

Thanks! I was able to order it to pick up curb-side today. I figured I can always resell it next year if I find it doesn't meet my needs. The resale market has been pretty crazy too.

You can buy it directly from Schwinn for $899 with free shipping.

We did this and just got ours last week. It took the full 6 weeks they quoted to receive it. DH also put it together himself and while it was heavy to move the parts to the basement, he said assembly was pretty easy. We've both been really liking it so far. We use our own tablet and we can use a variety of apps - it's nice that we aren't tied to one thing so we can figure out what we both like. It's still pretty new for us, but so far we've both really been happy with the purchase!
Also bowflex also makes an exact copy of the ic4 (they have the same parent company). I got the ic4 specifically since it didn’t require an app and I’d rather watch Netflix while casually riding the bike than deal with someone screaming at me to try harder lol. I love the bike because it is super easy to hop on and start, unlike my treadmill which takes some setup each time.

I have the IC4 - got it at Dick's, same day pickup, probably just under $900 with tax AND a mat I added for the floor. I also got a new iPad (regular) on sale at Best Buy for about $250 that I use for the bike. Still half the cost of a Peloton.

Can you move the handle bars forward and back on either of these? Not up and down, but closer or further from the seat.

BestBuy is selling it for $799 but it is out of stock. I called Schwinn to ask for a price match and they would give $50 off so it would be $849. I ended up buying the IC3 at BestBuy instead. I would have preferred the IC4 but I didn't want to wait and figured if I use it a lot I can always upgrade next year when there is hopefully more inventory.
Echelon sport from Walmart! $499 and connects with Bluetooth! And then I use an iPad for Peloton app.
Consider the Echelon App as well. They have really great programming. Live rides have 20-100 people instead of 23K people so you actually get an instructor shoutout almost every time you ride live. They have “fitpass” classes too (non-bike classes like strength, yoga, etc).

I just got mine set up this weekend! I've been using the Echelon Freeride on my iphone for live metrics, Peloton Digital App on Roku for classes, printed out a conversion chart, and then just screen shot my ride at the end to manually load into Garmin Connect.
If any Echelon owner has suggestions for how to better save or send metrics (for free) from a ride let me know. My only complaint so far is I wish Peloton had cadence/resistance superimposed on the screen. It's sometimes hard to hear the instructor callouts over the music.

I have a Saris M2 smart trainer for my road bike. Trainer cost me about $400. I have used both Rouvy and Zwift - haven't tried Pelaton yet (and admit that I don't get Zwift at all - it feels like a video game). Cheaper option - as someone mentioned up thread - if you already have a road bike, get a "dumb" trainer for around $100 and a cadence sensor for like $40. Clearly, without a road bike, this becomes less economical.
