I’m the manager of a medical practice, so we are essential. However we have pared down our volume to where we are only seeing a handful of very urgent patients per day, like 4-6. Our normal volume can be up to 150 per day. We have started doing telemed visits as well but obviously we have had to cut back staff hours, by 50%. I remain the only FT employee along with our nurse and we both WFH. Each staff member goes in for a few hours per week except a couple who are higher risk.
It’s unreal how quickly we have had to restructure and readapt our entire business model.
My husband is leadership on an aircraft carrier. Considering the close quarters and the fact that they have to go up and down ladders every day I will be shocked if he doesn’t bring COVID home. They’ve gotten things organized so that most sailors are on skeleton shifts (working minimally) but he is “essential” and is there every day for at least 10 hours and for the past three weeks he stays overnight once per week. It’s demoralizing for me because I’m WFH and my kids are doing remote learning and we never leave the house. But it feels like we’re still sitting ducks .
I manage a large manufacturing plant. We are an automotive tier supplier. My customers have all declared we are essential business. All the OEMs have shutdown but they are still requiring all service orders and R&D orders to ship as normal so we are running limited production. Last week we did a full shutdown to clean the plant and reconfigure our break rooms and assembly lines to meet 6’ social distancing guidelines. I keep telling my people that we need to think past the current stay at home order (which in my state only lasts till the end of this week). We need to prepare ourselves to be able to manufacture as safely as possible while the COVID crisis continues, which could be months to come. As long as I have people working in my plant I’m there as well. Managing this situation and the decisions that have to be made everyday is very stressful. With that said though I realize I am very privileged and need to do more for those in need. I worry it’s only going to get worse.

I work part-time for an animal shelter, which is essential. Morale is pretty good right now because our company is handling leave and quarantines very well, and we had an amazing response from fosters taking ALL our animals. We do need to have staff on site to deal with medical issues, intake animals, and facilitate adoptions, but our spay/neuter clinic is shut down so there's much less traffic through the building and we're keeping distance from our fosters & volunteers. I think morale will be a different story next month when kitten season takes off.
I am grateful to have that job right now, my FT job went to 100% WFH and I live alone, so the shelter still feels normal even though we've had to change almost every single thing to deal with this situation.
Here is just a little sampling of what I encountered yesterday.
- Woman in her 50’s comes in for 3 bananas - Same woman comes back in the afternoon for just a salad - Family of 3 - two young adults (mid-late 20s) with a small child in an infant carrier, buying only swimsuits and workout wear, nothing else - Mid 30 yr old man and woman buying $300 worth of summer clothes in toddler size 4. - Family of 4 - two grown adults and twin 7 yr old girls (who were each carrying a plastic doll carrier with a doll inside). They are all wearing masks AND goggles??. Want to know what they purchased? A TV, some hand weights and doll clothes for the dolls the girls were carrying - Several older couples (as in over the age of 70) buying just a couple of random things - Grandma, with 4 teen boys - comes to buy video games and baseball cards
Come get your groceries, that is perfectly fine but all these people coming in getting non essential shit, as a couple or family - YOU ARE RISKING MY HEALTH AND SAFETY FOR YOUR STUPID CRAP!
That is a lot. Thank you for everything you are doing.

It's frustrating because people are clearly using Target as a get out of the house/entertainment venue, and shopping for fun.
meltoine, runblondie26, kate1482, Are your husbands still flying? Mine started a 4 day trip today; I was sure it was going to be cancelled but it looks like he's flying the only flights of the day between certain cities NOT cancelled. :/ It's basically one flight/day so not a lot of flying. The flights are basically empty but I imagine they're full of cargo.

Dh’s last trip was a mix of parking jets/dead heading or flying like 15 people. He just got home so we shall see what happens when he goes back in Friday.

Well, mine is COV+ so he's in quarantine and on an LOA. But he was flying until he tested positive. He's bid reserve the past couple of months and has only gotten a couple of trips. Last one was operate one leg, deadhead home.
But yeah, 80% of flights are canceled and the ones that aren't are mostly empty.
My business is essential. Everyone on my team can work from home, but not everyone in the company has that option. I wish that they would put something formal in place to ensure that my team didn't have to go in on occasion to do some tasks that the office staff could easily do. My company's response has not felt very coordinated.
This is really shitty that you expect others to do stuff for you so you don't have to go in. I work in pharma in a department that is critical to getting products out the door. There are departments that can work from home but they need to be responsible for their own work. I am already working extended hours and cannot do things for other departments on top of my own responsibilities. I am thrilled that I have the support of my manager and site leadership to back me up on that. My morale would be better if people like you didn't expect people like me to pick up your slack.

Editing to be more compassionate: My goal was to reduce the number of people in the office, so those who have to be there aren't as exposed to germs by those who are not essential coming in. Especially since, when I wrote that, my husband was doing CoVid testing, one of my team members had potential CoVid symptoms, and another team member was recovering from a non-covid respiratory illness. I really just needed some small changes in process that would have been...Maybe 10 extra minutes of work a week. I think it was worth it to reduce exposure to those who weren't in the office.
Luckily one of the essential people was happy to do a contactless drop off on her way home, so this has all been resolved. But asking someone to help out a bit to reduce exposure is not an unreasonable request! My concern was driven not just by my team's health, but the health of other colleagues as well. Sorry your situation has been so difficult, sunnysally, but your situation is not my situation.

Mine has actually been working a ton lately. We live in base and there are bunch of broken pairings that need last minute coverage. Fortunately, they have been primarily day trips, but a couple have been overnights in a hotel. The majority of flights have like 4 passengers, but his JFK-FLL on Saturday had 86 people on it!
We expect it to drop to nothing for May and June, and most people will be put back on reserve and not get used.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope he is doing ok and recovers quickly.

Are you guys cutting your budgets right now? It will be interesting to see what happens after September 30th.
ETA- I guess we are surrounded by tech people so it feels like everyone is operating like normal.

meltoine I hope he recovers ASAP and he has a very mild case.
kate1482 We are being very cautious. We had a big purchase planned this summer that we are most definitely not going forward with. MH will likely be on reserve next month and he has not been on reserve in years :/ He's a commuter so it's not ideal. I cannot fathom how the airlines can recover from this. The plane MH flew this AM- 2 passengers and hardly any cargo. He flys big jets, not RJs. We cannot figure out why they even did this flight??

Absolutely. We’ve been through the rough patches in this industry before, so we’ve always been conservative with saving for a rainy day. We’re squirreling everything away right now. Hopefully, it’ll just be extra savings we can use for something else in the future. DH’s company likes to talk about how they’ve never furloughed, but no one knows how this will play out yet, so we’re getting prepared.

I work at walmart. We're feeling like sitting ducks, and getting increasingly annoyed by the people that we see in the store every damn day. We're busting our asses trying to keep us and the customers safe and it's a fucking joke to half of them. I am seriously considering taking the 2 week leave (with no pay) when the stimulus checks come out. I work in the auto center normally and it's closed for most services anyway, so we've been doing lots of cleaning and touch ups instead of actual work.
