I'm confused about why this has stunned health officials. Isn't this why they say you need to be 6' apart, because the virus can spread when someone coughs or sneezes. I know the article claims that no one was coughing or sneezing, but come on, in a group of that size, people would have coughed or sneezed on occasion. Is the concern is that so many people got sick? Even if the person was in the middle of the room, there would have been people more than 6' away who then got sick.
Also the activity seems relevant here. Like maybe this would be shocking if you were talking about it spreading like that amongst people in a moving theater. But people who are singing take in and expel a lot of air. And they do all those vocal chord warm ups that require a lot of enunciating. Even if nobody is coughing, there's probably a ton of spit droplets being fired around.
Yes. I also think it might be relevant that in addition to breathing on each other, you breathe through your mouth. And your mouth is basically constantly open.
Johnson & Johnson says it has selected a coronavirus vaccine candidate to test in humans; the experimental vaccine will begin the first phase of human clinical trials in September.

All of this. I sing in a different 100-voice choir in the PNW, and on March 4th we got two e-mails about 30 minutes apart: the first was with the protocol Skagit Valley Chorale followed, where you stay home if you have even the mildest symptom of anything, bring on the hand sanitizer and social distancing, etc. The second e-mail was from the director - never mind, we're cancelling rehearsal this week, I'll send out practice notes for home.
I was grateful then, and am even more grateful now, that our leadership cancelled as soon as they did - that early in March there were very few cancellations yet. There is no way to sing in that large a group without sharing air. The sickest I've ever been is after performing in a concert where someone two rows away had a wicked respiratory bug they thought was no longer contagious. I am just heartsick for Skagit Valley Chorale members - it's a regional chorus with members in a few small towns in NW Washington. This whole thing hits way too close to home for me.
Tl;dr: If you’re not sick enough to be hospitalized, don’t bother trying to get tested. Because if you’re positive, they’ll send you home with the same recommendation to self-isolate (if they even test you at all) and if you’re negative, then you’ve just exposed yourself to plenty of others who have it.
Anecdotally, if my dad’s test comes back positive, it’s likely he caught it while hospitalized a couple of weeks ago for a completely separate issue. This is what happens when the healthcare system is overwhelmed. If it’s not life or death, for your own safety, do whatever you can to avoid going to a medical facility right now.
I saw Virginia said stay at home orders through June 10th?? That's the furthest out I think I've seen an order go so far.
I reeeeeealllly hope that’s not true. I’m sure we’ll need to be doing this for a long time, but it needs to be in chunks- don’t tell me to self isolate for 3 months, tell me 3x every month. It makes it feel impossible otherwise.

And see, I feel the opposite. I'm a planner so I would feel more relaxed knowing further out.
I think that SIP orders that are further out may result in earlier job losses. If employers think it is a shorter time frame, they may be more likely to try to hold on to employees thinking it will be over soon. If they know from the start that it will be longer, then they may be more likely to just let people go.

Yeah, getting my soul crushed repeatedly is not better than facing facts and bracing myself for the on coming.
However, I think an important part was also the bit that it's June 10 or unless the gov rescinds the EO. So, it could be sooner but everyone needs to plan for long haul/take this seriously (b/c apparently people aren't!)

37 mind-boggling statements from Trump's Sunday night "briefing." I put that in dick quotes because obviously he's not using facts to inform his logorrhea. I can't watch him, but I will read his statements when I'm in the mental space to allow for BP spikes.
As awful as this is, it makes more sense to me. I know China clamped things down fairly quickly, but I still couldn't figure out how our and Italy's cases are already so much higher than what China is reporting.
As we all do our part to try to stay healthy let’s remember others as well. I know it sucks but try to stick with items you have at home and not order from Amazon for unnecessary items.

@@@@@
I work at a dual immersion school with Chinese being the other language. Several of my coworkers from China said this was the case.
Yeah given how it has acted in Italy and Spain and now in NY, I don't see how China's numbers are accurate. Given they are more of a dictatorship and can clamp down more, but still. If that is the case, though I was using those numbers in my research and now I am like $%^&. I am not in the health field, just in the absence of leadership we were doing pandemic planning for our org.

Am I the only one concerned about businesses calling him to let them know they're having trouble getting stuff approved through the FDA, so he just called the FDA to get it approved? I think it was the mask cleaning machine.
Listening to his press conference, so no link. (just nausea)

Yes-ish. I really want to email my friend who is an MD at FDA and see if I can get anything from him, but I shouldn’t. That said, speaking as a regulatory elsewhere, I will say he fight the admin on wanting to do the best scientific job we can. And we get raked over the coals for it (including here, some projects I am personally involved with), including taking to long to do things. Because we want to make sure we get the science right. But, there are trade offs between policy and science, as we are often having to do the best science we can with the science and resources we have.

I think I'd feel better if he had even said DOCTORS or medical professionals called him to recommend the push. But the business, that feels worrisome to me. Especially being related to the safety of PPE

All I could think of is how much money did the company donate to his campaign

This is local to me. It was our governor (R) who asked Trump to intervene. The company is a nonprofit that, as best I can tell, does not make political donations. The FDA originally approved the cleaning system but for a randomly limited number compared to what the research showed it can do and would only allow it to be used in Ohio, rather than shipping the technology to NY and other hot spots as planned.
Mayors across GA are sending a letter to Governor Kemp insisting on a SIP order. Many say their citizens are still not taking it seriously. (No source yet except for a Facebook post from our mayor.) I hope he finally listens.
