One of my dear friends shared this article on FB about how kids anxiety levels are way down without the strict school/activities schedule.
Which ... Great. I'm happy that kids are "coming alive making pancakes" ersomeshit. I don't have time to help my kid make pancakes. We don't get to spend the day outside. I still have to work. My husband still has to work. We're trying to deal with a kid who somehow only has emergencies while we're both on conference calls and only has about 45 min of independent school work per day.
I think it's very kid dependant.
I have one who is living his best life by: -Playing on the computer -Lying in bed thinking -literally that is all he is doing
And I have another one who is losing her mind because she craves the social interaction. I have to now go out of my way to schedule Skype playdates and chalking with neighbor kids across a 10 foot gap, and any other idea I can come up so she doesn't lose her everloving mind.
I agree. What rubbed me the wrong way is that the person who posted it is a SAHM to 5 kids. I mean, yes, her life has probably changed, but she's just not dealing with what working parents are right now.
seeyalater52, there’s no such thing as too many updates from you! We will celebrate EVERY SINGLE milestone that you hit! It’s a very welcomed bright spot in all of this.
Our elementary parade was this morning. My kids loved it. I cried. We love our school. I miss them, the kids miss them, and it’s obvious how much the teachers miss the kids. So many emotions! We got to see the neighbor kids out. It was good for the soul.
Forget snow days...we’re having a Sun Day today. We haven’t seen the sun in far too long, and it’s gorgeous outside. We will do a little work, but we’re spending as much time outside as possible.

We’ve hit a good groove with e-learning for my first grader. We also have DD2 (3 in June) and DH is a teacher.
Basically, DD1 logs in at 8:15 and I sit with her while DH teaches, grades, posts things, etc. The three of us all sit at the dining room table. I keep my laptop open and visible and my work cell phone stays with me so that I can answer any calls, so my WFH is definitely more passive in the mornings. DD2 just watches TV nearby because I’m out of fucks to give about screen time. DD1 does a few subjects and then she takes a snack break when I do my work; occasionally I have morning conference calls so I try to schedule break time around them. DH jumps in to help too if I need to duck away since he’s not doing live e-teaching. Then DD1 finishes the remainder of her work after break and has been done before lunch every day, and she plays with DD2 at that point which is a huge help while DH and I continue to work. So the bulk of my “busy work” gets done in the afternoon when DD1 is done with schoolwork and DH is mostly done with teaching. Any conference call I have a say in scheduling I don’t schedule until 2:30 at the earliest. I also make sure to take sure breaks whenever I can to play with the kids.
I know everyone has different jobs and circumstances but wanted to share in case it’s helpful. It definitely helps that I don’t have to be present every minute between 9-5 and my employer has been really encouraging us to work whatever schedule works best for our situations. They’ve been awesome.
We're on week 2 of distance learning for my Kindergartner. The packets have been very easy - maybe 15 minutes of work, but the websites for math and reading seem to get progressively harder the more you play, so I'm hoping that supplements some of his learning because I'm also trying to get through month end while working from home.
The school app sends a dozen or so notifications a day. So I had to mute them while working. Last week, one of my days was super busy, so I never responded to anything on the app. DS was logged as absent. Because a parent needs to participate once each day to count as attendance.
Seriously? I'm drowning under these notifications, working full time, keeping two kids alive, while DH works as a first responder through a global fucking pandemic. She can see that he is accessing the website (she sent a message - great job DS, I see you went up two levels on X website today!)
I'm not actually mad at the teacher. I know she's just following her job. I'm just annoyed. I'm not entirely sure what I'm mad at... Everything?
I'm here too. I don't check my personal email until the end of the day because I can't handle 10 emails a day from the school principal, superintendant and his teacher as well as notices from Bloomz, Remind and whatever other communications apps they are using.
And THEN they start sending out cute memes implying that we should "make the most of this time" and "don't worry about the school work". Then stop emailing me all day, every day! It's no wonder I haven't slept well in 2 weeks.
If my pregnancy updates annoy the shit out of people because you're all trapped at home with kids who need actual attention please let me know.
I had my 11 week ultrasound today and everything looked great. Babe is super wiggly and active and measuring right on track It was my first time ever having an abdominal ultrasound which was pretty cool. You guys... I think we might actually be having a baby. It hasn't really sunk in yet. Next ultrasound is in 2 weeks for the NT scan.
Your updates make me happier than you could know. Never stop.
Since I am posting here more frequently I guess this is where I can put it in writing. I am pregnant and am being induced in the morning (coincidentally my due date). I stopped working the end of last week and tomorrow it's the earliest my OB would induce. I work in a hospital and she wanted 4 days of strict quarantine for staff safety (I guess the majority of symptoms pop up by day 4?). I will have 1 midnight stay and likely home Wednesday.
I am apprehensive but relieved to be done working and glad to be in and out of the hospital before things get more serious locally.

We're using Google Classroom and it's up to the child to choose what they want to do each day. The teachers are recording videos showing the kids what they want them to do (like for DS it's writing the lowercase alphabet). DD has to read short articles about birds and write down what she learned. Super simple stuff but it does engage them. Then after that I have them play with i-Ready which is a 'game' teaching them about math and reading. They both get an hour before lunch and then an hour after lunch. Keeps them busy for a bit, and then they do artsy stuff, I throw them outside if it's not raining, and then I have them do quiet time/solo reading/puzzles for a bit too. They also have chores they have to do (laundry/sweeping/dusting/picking up their toys).

My H is home with the kids today while I’m working and he made it a whole 30 minutes into the morning before he punished them by taking away shows the rest of the day. Freakin amateur - that’s the absolute last resort we need to go to right now!
We started remote learning today. It seemed to go pretty smoothly but I hated it. I "taught" my class but it's nothing like teaching. There's no interaction (42 kids on Zoom, so I have to mute them all). I don't teach by lecturing. I count on their energy and discussion and group work and it just made me so sad. I miss my kids. I miss my co-workers. I miss regular life
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
Day 1 complete. It was ok but Seesaw crashed and literally everything is linked from there. We were able to get back in after lunch and got everything done, but I had to sit next to her and direct each step. Today’s my day off from work but I logged on at 7am and got a few hours of work done in order to spread my hours out this week. It was a good call because It is easier for DD to use my laptop to complete her work vs my iPad, so we won’t be able to work simultaneously until the cable arrives next week for my desktop pc. And my 4 year old is playing educational games on the iPad. Whatever. PA just announced schools are closed indefinitely, and I’m ready to cry. Also, seeyalater52 I’m thrilled for you. Please keep updating.

My sister is due with her first babies (twins) in early May and I'm feeling bummed that all this means I won't get to meet them for a while. And she might be moving abroad this fall so then what? I see them once and then bye for 2 years?
My 7 month old had a fever of 104.8 all weekend so who knows WTF that was all about (he seems better now).

Did you take your 7 month old to the doctor or do a web visit? 104.8 is pretty high. ETA: glad he is doing better! I'm sure it's more challenging than ever to figure out when it's necessary to seek out medical care when a visit to the doctor's office can be riskier than staying home.

We called as soon as we knew it was that high on Saturday morning, but they had JUST closed for the weekend. They recommended we try to keep him comfortable until Monday and really discouraged pediatric urgent care unless his situation deteriorated. My pedi is doing carside visits so they encouraged that, but it wouldn't be until monday afternoon. We were able to keep his fever down to 102 by alternating tylenol and ibuprofen. He was eating plenty (lots of BM and even a bunch of purees). This morning when he woke up the fever was gone. Of course. LOL It was stressful. Poor guy. It also makes zero sense, because we haven't left the house in 2 weeks so where did this virus come from?

I'm sure it was stressful. The car side visits sound great as long as your kid gets sick M-F. Maybe he's got an ear infection? If he seems cranky when he lays down tonight, I'd take him for the car side option tomorrow to have his ears checked. Some kids get a fever when they cut teeth, but not usually that high. Good luck!

That what they thought when I called Saturday which is why they thought it would be ok to wait. He seems totally fine now but if the fever returns we’re definitely going in. He’s super snotty now so an ear infection could definitely be in his future. His temp now is under 99.

seeyalater52 I think its up to 4th or 5th'ed now, but yes the updates are lovely!
icedcoffee I hope he's better and it turns out to be nothing.
I can't handle the touch pad on the kids Chrome books, so I impulse ordered wireless mice for them. If I am going to have to help them, I need to be able to function! I am not a touch pad person. Must have mouse.

You sounds like an amazing teacher
My middle enjoyed zoom with good teacher but it’s definitely not the same

Online learning began today and it’s already been a mess. The school gave out one laptop per household to low income families. My friend has 3 middle schoolers and they had zoom meetings scheduled at the same time for different classes. She’s completely overwhelmed trying to figure out how to get all 3 of the kids to have enough time on the one laptop.
My kids were kicked out of daycare today. They were completely filled with high priority families. I’ve called every pandemic center in the county and couldn’t find an opening for them. I am relieved that my company qualifies for the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, but I am still very concerned that this will affect my career. I’m really worried what this means for all of the families still working that just lost care and work for larger companies.

This is like the opposite of irritating. Not to seem all creepy Internet stranger, but I wonder how things are going with you and am so happy to hear this update!!!

My 3 year old had this too. She hasn’t been pot of the house in 1.5 weeks. It was 24 hours. So weird.

Glad you'll be in and out so fast, and before things get nuts where you are. I've been wondering if they are doing extra or earlier inductions right now, to get moms and babies in and our of the hospital before they are overwhelmed. Our lead daycare teacher posted a picture of her baby bump today, after online circle time. She is 34 weeks pregnant. Our area is projected to peak right about 3 weeks from now. Fingers crossed her baby doesn't come early and that she has a safe place to go to deliver that baby.
