I posted the link on yesterday’s thread, but the WHO recommends not wearing the masks if you are healthy.
I also think that the use of gloves is mind boggling. I’m not sure why touching every surface with gloves, or then trying to dispose of them properly and after each use would be preferable to sanitizing and washing and not touching your face.
I've seen so many discarded latex gloves on the ground in parking lots recently and it's so gross. I really don't like people sometimes.
Look up no sew face masks... there are a lot of DIY tutorials online.
I have seen some tutorials even using bras.
I saw the bra mask tutorials too, and was kind of laughing at how much of my face my G cup bra would cover and didn't really give it a second thought. When I saw AJL post her masks, and saw how much they cover, I started giving it a second thought.
I also went down a rabbit hole reading about citric acid (also zinc and copper) as an antiviral. It was pretty interesting.
I swear, all this is scrambling my brain. I couldn't get a file to upload, and it took a solid hour before I realized I could just reduce the file size. As soon as I did that, bam, it uploaded.
I was looking for my bag of walnuts yesterday to put in my oatmeal. They were in the freezer. No fucking clue how that happened.
I always keep my walnuts in the freezer! My grandma used to, she said they kept longer and didn’t taste rancid. I don’t know about all that, but it reminds me of her, so I just keep doing it.
I’m sorry about your H, sangria. How stressful for you guys. ((hugs))
I’m on day 10 of waiting for my test results to come back. The lab told my docs off they are super backed up. Neither my doc nor I are very thrilled. And my breathing is getting worse. Having an actual conversation with someone leaves me incredibly winded. Last night, my doc gave me info about when I should go to the ER. So. I’m doing fiiiiiiiiiine.
Huh. Maybe I need a proofer. I can't ever get my bread to prove correctly.
My house is rarely the correct temperature. The Perfect Loaf guy uses his oven with the light on as a proofer sometimes too. Today is my first time using the tabletop one. I like the idea of being able to make yogurt w/o having to buy a yogurt maker.

This got me to thinking, and you can prove bread in an instant pot. Well, the round type bread, not loaf bread.
I would love to do some baking, but I still can't find flour anywhere.
There were a few bags of bread flour when I went last week, so I guess I'm going to make bread? Our store also has a ton of gluten free flour, but I've never baked with it, so I don't want to waste it.
I was up late last night working on masks and happened to see the CDC story before I went to bed, so that was kind of a nice confirmation that I'm prepared if that becomes an official recommendation. I'm shipping four today to my sister who is a nurse and requested them to wear over her n95 to prolong its life. She said she has already ordered a few from Etsy, but if she has a sizable stash, she can use a clean one several times a day or offer them to coworkers. I'll send one to my mom, who is out in public a lot more than my dad because she handles their shopping and med pick-ups. She is taking this very seriously and understands the difference between a fabric mask and an n95, so I'm not worried about a mask reducing her social distancing. Then I'll get started on more. If the CDC thing becomes a reality, I'll start offering to make them for neighbors and DH's co-workers.
If anyone's curious, right now I'm using the pattern linked below, which doesn't call for an internal wire or elastic. Many of the others do, and the right-size elastic can be really hard to come by; I managed to order some off Etsy from a wholesale place in L.A. and it's in transit. The one below is a bit more involved and takes longer, but I like that it's 100% washable fabric and doesn't require any special supplies. I sew about once a year and haven't made anything from an actual pattern in decades, but this was still very doable for someone who only knows the basics.
Thanks for this. I've been using a pretty basic pattern with ear elastics (the one Deaconess Hospital put out), and I wanted to switch to a pattern with ties. I'm a decent but irregular sewer and this definitely looks doable. I would think you could switch out the hemmed ties for some twill ribbon (which I have), which would make it easier and faster? It might not look as pretty but would still do the same job. I might try it.

Yeah, last time I went our store had one or two small bags of GF flour (coconut flour, I think), but I've never baked with it, and I also felt like I should leave it for people who actually need GF options.
I have an interview in a few minutes for a job I no longer want. I’m keeping the appointment so I have practice. It’s my first video interview and I haaaaate talking on things like FaceTime so this should be interesting.

You could absoltly use twill tape. Or commercial bias tape if youre like me and keep buying it but never using it.
to add a little laughter to our day, I dressed up as Marie Antoinette to teach my class this morning. My students were dying laughing so worth it, but I'm definitely a meme by now
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
H wants to do Door Dash for lunch because we are out of turkey, and he wants a sub. I’m going to tear my hair out and then stick it in his PB sandwich.
So my H got his test results back today and he is positive. He had mild cold symptoms for a week or so, no fever or anything else. He was exposed over the weekend of March 13-15 and he was tested on the 24th. We've been quarantined in our house for over 2 weeks since we knew he was exposed and I've never had any symptoms. I'm not even sure what that means as far as my potential status as a silent spreader I'm scared to go get our groceries now but am I just supposed to stay home indefinitely? Ugh.
Do you mind if I ask what the mild cold symptoms were? I keep reading that some people have mild cold symptoms, but don’t know what that means exactly. I ask because my husband and I got sick about twelve days ago with what we think is a cold, but I’m still getting an annoying dry cough and nasal congestion at night and my husband’s cough sounds like it’s trying to decide if it wants to become bronchitis/pneumonia (he’s susceptible to developing pneumonia after having a really bad bout of it a couple of years ago). We’ve never had a fever though.
I’m sorry you guys are going through this! I’m glad to hear he got a mild case though and hope you never got it! Is there anyone you can call to drop groceries off for you?
Huh. Maybe I need a proofer. I can't ever get my bread to prove correctly.
I use my oven (turned off). I stick a cake pan of hot water in there with the bread dough.
I like this method! I often turn the oven on for just a minute or two to get it to warm up, and then turn it off and put the dough in to proof. But I like your method better.

Of course! He actually kind of lost his sense of smell/taste and then just feel that low level congestion feeling. Not like sinuses stuffed or runny nose but you know how when you have a cold and then you wake up in the morning and feel kind of phlegmy? Like that. He had a couple days of mild fatigue too. No fever. That's about it. Now the one caveat is that he was sick back in January with some virus that caused him to have kind of a dry gross cough- never had a fever then but the cough lingered for WEEKS. In fact he was tested for Valley Fever and had chest x-rays at the beginning of March and both were negative. Again, he never felt short of breath or truly just knocked out sick but the cough hung around. So it's hard to tell if the mild coughing he had two weeks ago was Covid-19 or just that post viral cough from January.

The only thing I'd watch with the ribbon is that you'd still have to do separate top/bottom bindings, because the way it's structured, the ties *are* the top/bottom binding.
The other tip I recommend to anybody trying this pattern is, if you can cut the full 40" for the ties/top bottom binding, do it. The default instruction is to cut two 20-inch lengths and sew them together, and I did that for the first time last night. It's slower and fussier and you end up with the sewn-together part of the tie/binding landing right in the middle of the mask, which already has some extra bulk because of the darts.
We're in the middle of refinancing our house, and we've been hung up on finishing because of the appraisal.
First, they couldn't find anyone to take on the appraisal because they ordered a full appraisal and it was right at the start of the outbreak in WA. Then last week (or maybe over the weekend?) the credit union said we're switching everyone to drive-by appraisals. Cool.
So this morning the appraiser calls to schedule our appointment for next week and it's for a full appraisal. WTF?!! I told him that we were supposed to be switched to a drive-by and he hasn't heard anything about it, and said he'd ask, but for now we're scheduled for a full appraisal until it gets sorted out.
I am really fucking unhappy about the idea of a stranger whose been godknowshwere tromping around through my house when we are BY STATE MANDATE not supposed to be doing that. I'm 99% sure it will get straightened out and switched to a drive by, but FFS.
To top it off, we also discovered during this process that when we refinanced 10 years ago that mortgage company also screwed something up and even though I'm on the mortgage I'm not on the title. Auuggggghh!!! At least we'll be able to fix it this time around.

Thank you so much for responding! I appreciate it!

Did he have any chest pain? I knew a few people, including myself that had similar symptoms and the odd facet of slight chest pain too. Like a tightness or so something. No shortness of breath.
Mask seamstresses, this is the basic pattern I’m using (pic in yesterday’s chat thread). I did use another mask as the pattern rather then her print out. But, I like it so much better than when I tried the rectangle pleated masks. Note, that is because I get overconfident when I sew, and like to make up my own patterns using things as inspiration. Which means I did not measure, so my pleated version was very wonky.
