Mask seamstresses, this is the basic pattern I’m using (pic in yesterday’s chat thread). I did use another mask as the pattern rather then her print out. But, I like it so much better than when I tried the rectangle pleated masks. Note, that is because I get overconfident when I sew, and like to make up my own patterns using things as inspiration. Which means I did not measure, so my pleated version was very wonky.
Do you mind if I ask what the mild cold symptoms were? I keep reading that some people have mild cold symptoms, but don’t know what that means exactly. I ask because my husband and I got sick about twelve days ago with what we think is a cold, but I’m still getting an annoying dry cough and nasal congestion at night and my husband’s cough sounds like it’s trying to decide if it wants to become bronchitis/pneumonia (he’s susceptible to developing pneumonia after having a really bad bout of it a couple of years ago). We’ve never had a fever though.
I’m sorry you guys are going through this! I’m glad to hear he got a mild case though and hope you never got it! Is there anyone you can call to drop groceries off for you?
Of course! He actually kind of lost his sense of smell/taste and then just feel that low level congestion feeling. Not like sinuses stuffed or runny nose but you know how when you have a cold and then you wake up in the morning and feel kind of phlegmy? Like that. He had a couple days of mild fatigue too. No fever. That's about it. Now the one caveat is that he was sick back in January with some virus that caused him to have kind of a dry gross cough- never had a fever then but the cough lingered for WEEKS. In fact he was tested for Valley Fever and had chest x-rays at the beginning of March and both were negative. Again, he never felt short of breath or truly just knocked out sick but the cough hung around. So it's hard to tell if the mild coughing he had two weeks ago was Covid-19 or just that post viral cough from January.
Alright. Well now I think I had it. I had a slight fever (just over 100) and woke up the next morning drenched in sweat (which is usually how I know I’m breaking a fever, but this one wasn’t even that high so I don’t know if it means anything.) I’ve been run down and tired, which I figured was just the blues. Slight cough, which I figured was allergies. Then H was saying my hair smelled good from my shampoo and I realized I couldn’t smell it. Tried my perfume, toothpaste, lotions- nothing. He lit a match and I could smell that, so it wasn’t gone completely. It wasn’t until this morning when I was pumping out some bubblegum scented toothpaste that I realized how strong that smell is that it really hit me how much I couldn’t smell it before (if that makes sense). Now I still feel tired and I have a swollen lymph node like I’m getting a sore throat, but it honestly just feels like I’m fighting off a cold. If it weren’t for the lack of smell I never, ever would have thought this could be it. Everything just feels so mild.

Did he have any chest pain? I knew a few people, including myself that had similar symptoms and the odd facet of slight chest pain too. Like a tightness or so something. No shortness of breath.
No pain he says. More like chest irritation briefly. LOL whatever that means!
Our Aldi had flour last week. I know we've debated Aldi's sanitation vs other stores, but might be ok if you just grab flour and don't use a cart if you really need some. Full confession I shopped at Aldi last week and just tried to be extra vigilant.
We made it through dh's appointment. I was impressed with how the office had blocked off half the chairs and had staggered appointments so there was mostly just 1 appointment person in the waiting room at a time. It's normally packed in there

I hope this isn't being a TW, but I just want to get it out. Someone we know passed away from COVID-19 the other day - he had underlying issues (diabetes, heart, overweight, over 60), but still. I can't help but feel this is only the beginning, and I hate that feeling.

I'm making this same one. I find it's more comfortable overall and the mens pattern size fits well over a N95 mask.
So, if I were going to make this using old clothes, what kind of fabric/clothes should I use? I read up on "quilting weight cotton" which she recommends; it seems to be like a heavy-weight 100% cotton. I don't have much fabric per se but have clothes I can repurpose.

I don't know if this question is answerable, lol.
I had a stack of random quilting cotton that I’ve been using but old sheets work well too. I’m at the point of something is better than nothing.
We're in the middle of refinancing our house, and we've been hung up on finishing because of the appraisal.
First, they couldn't find anyone to take on the appraisal because they ordered a full appraisal and it was right at the start of the outbreak in WA. Then last week (or maybe over the weekend?) the credit union said we're switching everyone to drive-by appraisals. Cool.
So this morning the appraiser calls to schedule our appointment for next week and it's for a full appraisal. WTF?!! I told him that we were supposed to be switched to a drive-by and he hasn't heard anything about it, and said he'd ask, but for now we're scheduled for a full appraisal until it gets sorted out.
I am really fucking unhappy about the idea of a stranger whose been godknowshwere tromping around through my house when we are BY STATE MANDATE not supposed to be doing that. I'm 99% sure it will get straightened out and switched to a drive by, but FFS.
To top it off, we also discovered during this process that when we refinanced 10 years ago that mortgage company also screwed something up and even though I'm on the mortgage I'm not on the title. Auuggggghh!!! At least we'll be able to fix it this time around.
We had the same concerns. Our appraiser was great. She told me last week Fannie May approved use of the 2055 form. She couldn’t approach our lender about it though, I had to. I sent this to my lender:
“Hi (lender), I just touched base with our appraiser, (name). She cannot reach out to you guys directly but we need to find out if as the lender you all will be OK with a 2055 form, which is an exterior drive-by appraisal? Apparently about an hour ago Fannie Mae said that was OK. We have been trying to figure out how to do the interior appraisal while not bringing in an external person. We have been on full lockdown here since the 13th heading into my mom’s surgery next week. Let me know what you guys are doing and if (bank name) is OK with that 2055 form. We are happy to provide live videos/photography to anyone who needs it of the interior of the house at any time.”
They accepted it. The appraiser did take me up on the interior photos offer, also. I sent over pics of every room/area, bathroom & closet.
Anyone else constantly sniffing stuff to make sure you still have a sense of smell?
Yes, but that's only because I lost my sense of smell two weeks ago. It's come back some, but not 100% I don't think. Maybe I'm a hidden carrier. I haven't had any other symptons, except extreme fatigue which I attributed to traveling and the time change right around the same time I lost my sense of smell.

Quilting fabric is not a heavyweight fabric. It’s 100% cotton, but pretty lightweight.
FWIw, I’m using flannel and some quilting fat quarters, but also include the pocket for some none-woven fabric.
the CDC study used Hanes heavyweight t-shirts boiled for 10 minutes. I wash on a steam cycle and dry on high to maximize shrinkage.
Also, if you are fairly new to sewing, as an FYI, if you repurpose old t-shirts or other knits, you’ll need a ballpoint needle on your machine. It will have a gold head. The red heads are for woven fabrics.

Thanks. I've done basic sewing in the past, mainly craft projects. However, my mom has the shared sewing machine so I would be hand stitching.

All day long. Plus when my hands smell like snacks and not soap, I am reminded to wash them.
I feel like all of us who live through this will be obsessive hand-washers until the day we die. I wasn't gross before, but now I find myself noticing how dirty my hands are, even when I've just be sitting at my computer typing for a while and not exposing myself to new germs.
Fifty years from now, people will be joking about their grandparents obsession with soap and water, like people talk about their Depression grandparents' obsession with food waste.

Can someone explain this step to me? "Insert the tracing paper between the layer, trace sewing lines with tracing wheel." What tracing paper?
ETA I do have one of those spiky roller things, and a self-heal board.
Theyre talking about chalk paper. Youd know if you had it. Youre going to have to mark it a different way.
Etav she's marking the sewing lines. You can eyeball it.
Thanks! I couldn't conceptualize the step at first. But now I think I see. I cut off the seam allowance (on the paper version) then traced sewing lines right on the fabric. I think that's what the goal was. Thank you!

People actually do this? I just use the gauge on my sewing machine, which has lines for common sea, allowances. But also, when I use a pattern, my stuff tends to be way too big b.c I hate 5/8” seams.
I’m not one for technical sewing 🤣 I eyeball historical dresses and sew costumes. But I suck at actual real pattens.
So my H got his test results back today and he is positive. He had mild cold symptoms for a week or so, no fever or anything else. He was exposed over the weekend of March 13-15 and he was tested on the 24th. We've been quarantined in our house for over 2 weeks since we knew he was exposed and I've never had any symptoms. I'm not even sure what that means as far as my potential status as a silent spreader I'm scared to go get our groceries now but am I just supposed to stay home indefinitely? Ugh.
Can you get a friend or neighbor to pick up groceries for you? I believe you are supposed to stay in for 2 weeks after exposure, which means for at least 2 weeks after DH is better, unless he isolates from you, in which case 2 weeks from whenever that happens, or maybe longer... there will probably be new guidelines by then. I have a cold (no known exposure so I can't get tested, but I've had it almost 3 weeks now) and our neighbors have been bringing us groceries because I won't let DH go to the grocery store. It sucks, but your neighbors would rather get your groceries than COVID.
The hardest part for me has been talking DH out of going anywhere. And my parents out of coming over. I keep hearing, "but you don't have a fever" and "you don't seem to be coughing that much" and "are you sure it's not just allergies?" Yeah, if the only people spreading this virus were deathly ill, we'd be containing it so much better.

I’m so sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing, peace be with you.

Our HOA disconnected the power to the outlet in our deeded parking space and we have two electric vehicles. So until we figure out WTF happened, to keep our cars charged, we'll have to go find a public charger every few days to make sure it stays above 10%. We were doing well staying home and only leaving for dog walks and walking over to the grocery store. I'm so pissed that they basically made a reason for us to leave our place.
My mom's school had them go in at scheduled intervals to pick up items they need to start teaching from home. The janitor letting them in is her best friend's brother. Apparently the teacher before her told him my sister died (she didn't- tested positive and doing fairly well now) and he was in tears knowing my mom was coming by. She's furious right now because she didn't tell many people just for this reason. People are gross and I'm sure we'll start seeing more of the gossipy type spreading crap like this.

I am frustrated and can’t figure out how to clearly express myself
Positive cases are just starting to reach my area. So many people are basically making testing positive a moral failure. If we had all just been better at social distancing...
But a lot of people still have to work. I haven’t grocery shopped in two weeks but I really have to go soon. My husband had to stop for dog food because Amazon is so slowed down and we had none left- I’ve bought it. It’s shipped. We just don’t know when it will come.
It was always the case that a lot of us were going to get sick; isn’t the point just slowing it down? I just... can’t deal with the moral outrage against everyone who has it so far when it could very well be me in two weeks
I’m not in total denial or anything. This is freaking scary but... people are acting like this was going to magically somehow skip our town

I haven't seen this at all. I'm sorry. It's horrible that people are acting like this.
