When a company does a background check, do they just check what dates of employment were or do they check title too?
Am thinking about changing a job title of 2 jobs ago and wondering if that'll be a problem come background check time. The one currently there is just not a standard title. Thanks!
I've mostly worked for small companies, so if they said, "and was her title Underwater basket weaving associate?" the person there would likely confirm if it was within the realm of what I did and didn't over-inflate my responsibilities. Not, like, "vice president of underwater basket weaving" or something.
If we do an employment verification (not standard and I work at a high volume staffing company) we are more focused on dates and company. If the total is “reasonable” it’s not a big deal. Now if a person listed VP of Prduct Development but we confirmed Customer Service Agent there would be an issue, but we would also reach out and find out why the person changed the title.
I work in HR for a large company, we do confirm title. Is there any way for you to put your actual title in parentheses or something? Like: HR Director (Baroness of Worker Bee Satisfaction). We mostly care about honesty so that wouldn’t raise any flags for our background check team.

Stay honest. I wouldn't include or not disclose anything you might lose sleep over if you're worried they will look into it.
