Can some of our Canadian posters talk more about their experience with how their government is dealing with COVID? So much of the news I consume is focused on the US and I’m really curious to see how other countries are attacking this problem. Are their PPE shortages? Are tests readily available, and what screening criteria are used? Do you trust your local and national government?
I really try to avoid tattling to my team member’s bosses (matrix managed organization). But given all of this, and I haven’t heard from a team member since it all started. I suspect he is ignoring me. Which is typical, but usually after a few nags I get a response. But given everything, I am actually a bit worried, too. Basically, dropped off the face of the earth and won’t respond to emails or call into meetings. No out of office response.
Eta: boss confirmed that dude is working, so he is just ignoring me. But like a good boss, she defended him about his high priority work. Kinda like as a good PM, I claimed I was concerned about him bc of everything going on, not bc HE FRIGGIN IGNORES ME ALL THE TIME. Is it just me, or is management being like so much passive aggressive shit?!
I've decided to make this Dry April. My alcohol consumption has shot way up because of this nightmare, and I want to take better care of my immune system right now.
I will need to stock up on Easter candy in these trying times.
Today is my aunt's 88th birthday. She lives alone. I'm trying to decide if I should just do a phone call or go to her condo and stay outside and sing happy birthday in person.

Canadian but probably not as in the know as many others but we are short on PPE. I know people who work at hospitals who are being told to only use 1-2 face masks a day. Screening isnt readily available but they are testing more. We were super behind on getting test results back but they seem to be finally catching up.
I think our Prime Minister has been great in his response, lot so initiatives to help small/medium business owners and those who are unemployed/unable to work. But there has been a huge influx in applications and the system is behind in processing this. So a new EI payment was introduced that gives anyone whose job has been affected by this $2,000 a month for up to 4 months. This benefit is also going to be given to people who wouldnt have other qualified for EI (didnt pay into it, didnt have the hours etc).
I live in Ontario and I have not been a fan of our Premier but for the most part have appreciated how he seems to be handling this. Gatherings of over 5, unless they live in the same household, are banned. Most local parks, beaches, etc are closed.
But yes, I trust all local, provincial and national governments.

I would go sing in person. When I talk to neighbors across the yard it really helps boost my mood.

My opinion is similar to pandora89 There are global PPE shortages but my Mom says they are managing in Ottawa. I know that my Mom’s lab is currently turning around results in 24 hours with notification to patients within 2 days. This has only been the case for the past week, prior to that they were taking much longer as they were waiting on specialized equipment to surge their testing capacity.
Our governments at all levels have done enough I think to get ahead and stay ahead of the crisis. I know that all doctors on staff at the local hospital (even dermatologists) are currently being cross trained to help in ICU, ER and critical care. I know the lab is ramping up capacity and taking in nurses or doctors who can’t be client facing at this time. Work is underway locally for up to two intensive treatment centres as well as a dorm space for those who test positive with mild symptoms but who cannot return home for risk of infecting family members.
I think the governments’ instructions and messaging has been consistent across local, provincial and national jurisdictions. The provinces and national government appear to be cooperating and working well together. They are honest about what they do and don’t know, which is helpful. Media coverage has been constant and there is a lot of focus on feel good stories.
Screening criteria right now is to call your doctor or the telehealth line. If they feel you are a potential case, you are referred to a screening centre. They don’t want people to drop in Willy nilly. I know my Mom said that they are working towards notifying people who have been in contact with positive cases so they can start preemptive quarantines and also isolate those that don’t have any symptoms.

We have giant wasps nesting somewhere in the walls of our house. I have killed almost a dozen wasps in the last few days and they keep randomly turning up everywhere. I am allergic to bees and this is basically my nightmare.

I have been debating starting an Easter candy thread. I could use a diversion, and if there’s anything CEP can talk about its food.
ohgillian, do you have grocery delivery available?
(I've thought about the morality of just farming out my exposure to risk to someone else. But in theory, if the only people going to stores are healthy, and especially if they stay social distancing and the stores themselves are clean, like wiping down carts and things, the risk should be minimal. Most people are requesting their groceries just be left outside, even if usually an instacart person would help bring them in. Plus, for some people, delivery is their livelihood, so I figure I can just tip more than normal and help them pay their rent, you know?)
There is a ton of backstory here but my dad’s company is trying to reduce his pay by $13k a year despite the fact that he is doing the same damn job he has always done. The company was bought out a year ago and they were reassured pay would be the same. They closed his warehouse and he worked 7 fing days a week to move m and now they are pulling this shit. I’m livid but he needs the insurance and the pay. This company is disgusting and the warehouse he moved to is absolutely in osha violation and as soon as he’s gone from there I will be blasting them.
All this to say that it’s making my mom a complete bitch and also the lay he is making isn’t even worth the dang exposure to other people and this virus as he is in and out of medical facilities. I am super upset and hoping he can resolve this.

Before this all really ramped up, I decided it was time for a health kick and started WW. It’s been going quite well and I’ve lost a little over 10 pounds in the last month. I won’t say it hasn’t been hard, though. Being home all day and I’m not really drinking right now either.
DH is still considered essential and working. It definitely makes me nervous but it is what it is right now. He’s been great about stripping in the garage and bee lining past us and showering right away.
It was our neighbor’s birthday yesterday. A bunch of her friends stood 6 ft. apart and sang happy birthday with signs. We happened to be outside and saw it. It was really sweet and she was thrilled.
I’m also going to do no alcohol this month! My peloton arrived yesterday and my gym is doing zoom workouts and I have access to outstanding hiking right from my front door. I figure this time isolated from everyone is going to pass no matter what so I can either use it to improve myself or use it to drink too much and eat garbage. Choice is mine right?
I’m sad today though because April is always a month of celebration for us. My H bday is the 12th and mine is the 17th. Not so much this year which is a bummer 😞

Enjoy your Peloton! We got ours right after Christmas and it has been such a life saver in all this. I’ve been dealing with anxiety (just like everyone has) and doing a quick 30 minute ride helps so much. Yesterday I learned the latest cardio hip hop dance and it was so much fun!

I never knew a pandemic would cause me to stop drinking. I want my immune system to be in tip top shape and I don’t want to wake up feeling "off" from alcohol and me worrying about it being covid lol. So I haven’t drank in over 2 weeks but I certainly plan to have many drinks when things calm down in the future!

Please go sing in person if you can. I bet will make her feel so so special!!!
