It also wouldn't really be practical for rural areas, where people can live 30+ minutes from a grocery store.
Grocery store delivery is not ever going to be a thing where we live. We can't even get a pizza delivered to our house, let alone groceries.
I do feel ya there. I live in a medium-sized (about 15k people) town about a mile away from Walmart, Aldi and Schnucks (STL area grocery chain), and I forget I'm privileged that way. I grew up in the absolute boonies (and just fifteen miles away from where I currently live.)where there was no delivery, my mail box was two miles away from my house, no internet other than dial up (at the time, probably only super expensive/super unreliable satellite now) and shoddy cell service. You couldn't pay me enough to move back there. LOL
I love it here to be honest. It's quiet, private, we have tons of space. We can go for long walks in the woods right in our back yard, which is really helping right now. Going out to the grocery store once a week was basically the way were already did things pre-COVID. And when we go out to get pickup from somewhere now it's actually kind of nice to take a bit of a drive and be able to get out of the house in a safe way. I'll never be an urbanite.
I agree. I wish they'd go to 100% pickup or delivery right now, for both the workers' and the general public's sakes.
The main problem we are seeing in my city is the delivery/pick up spots all full. You have to schedule them a week+ out, which is fine for those who can plan/wait, but not those that have more urgent needs.
Here it's the wait time in addition to inventory issues. People place orders online, wait a week to pick it up, and then half their order can't be fulfilled. But I guess if everyone had to do delivery/pickup maybe they could better control people buying too much (H saw a woman clear out half the tofu section yesterday).

This was the case where I am (NYC) but now you just can't get a delivery window period. I check on Amazon Fresh several times a day and haven't seen any available for over a week. Plus fresh produce has been out of stock there for a while now. I'm trying to get what I can from the farmer's market because they are being very strict about who can touch what, but pickings are slip this early in the season.
We have been regular Fresh Direct customers for years so we’ve been able to still get our weekly deliveries but spots are filling up fast now with them too, so no more spots for next week right now. I might set my alarm to midnight tonight so I can wake up just to snatch a spot for next week. I do wish delivery would be prioritized nowadays to avoid as many people inside supermarkets as possible but I know staffing levels and hours are being impacted too.

I’ve used instacart since last summer and would get food within two hours, then about a month ago it went to next day, then a few days, now it’s been about a week or two that I can’t get anything at all. No time slots available ever for any of the stores. In right outside Boston so it’s not a rural area tough to get to. So now I’ve been going to supermarket about once a week with a mask and leave the kids in the car they’re 9 it’s fine. I’m in and out there’s only basics now.
Still getting beer delivery though so they’re not yet too overwhelmed to deliver!
I'm in the middle of a 5 mile walk and so angry at how traffic seems the same. Our friend works at Target and she ranted last night about all the people with kids just browsing like everything is fine.
That was awesome! I was hoping the payoff at the end would be Jeffrey making an appearance, but that may have been better.
I thought the same - I was hoping he’d stroll in at the end and I was curious if he’d still wear the sweater or if he’s got casual wear. If she does a video post about roasting chicken then he’ll probably make an appearance lol
I’m glad I saw the IG post first, because now I see that “Ina Garten” is trending on Twitter and I would’ve been really upset to think she’s sick or had died (obviously ANYONE getting sick or dying is horrible; I just mean as far as celebrities go she’s one of my favorites).

Phase 2 of movement restriction began today. It includes increased fines and patrols and country wide curfew. Where I am already had an even shorter curfew so this doesn't affect me. I did see a police car after curfew slowly drive up and down the street in front of my building. Ftr I sit outside most nights reading and rarely see even a single vehicle.
I did find out within the last 2 weeks (phase 1) they were actually jailing some people for violating the orders.
Thailand has restricted alcohol hours even more than normal. Usually it's 11a-2p and 5p-12a and nothing in certain holidays. I don't know if the new hours are country wide or left to individual cities; I just know what my local board has posted.

Our old man cat randomly yells at ... nothing. And he's loud. Like, you can hear him outside the house loud. And he has a cadence: four or five increasingly louder howls/shrieks, and then one last howl two octaves lower. He can last a full minute if he's having some serious thoughts. If you acknowledge him quickly enough, he'll stop, but you have to be within his line of sight and relatively close, and even then, he's prone to "talking back."
DH takes a work call this morning, and of course, the cat wakes up from his nap and starts yelling about four feet from DH. I nearly fell on my face trying to rush to the front of the house where DH is working to scoop up the old bastard and run him back to the office where I'm working. He's now happily purring away on my lap and drooling on my sweatshirt.

Animal interruptions are the best thing to happen to online meetings. LOL!
Although today, my boss' wife popped up behind my boss with a Jason hockey mask on, which was awesome.

I know you know this, but people in NYC don't have a way to physically get two weeks of groceries home, or enough room to store it.
Apparently, zoom does not work our vdi. And GoToMeeting is crazy overloaded and failing. As a bonus, Skype for buisnsss doesn’t work with outside Skype.
We had to interview someone today. Luckily, we tried all of these beforehand to discovered that yes, we have to make a hiring decision on a phone interview only. Candidate was the one asking for a zoom call in the end, so we said we’d be doing a second round of interviews with video. A) she’s the only candidate we are interviewing (the other candidate we interviewed in our last round of hiring). B) shit, we gotta figure something out. I think it’ll be on personal devices. Bc that’s the only choice.
My daily walks are keeping me sane. The weather has been wonderfully spring-y and sunny and I've been walking around my neighborhood once or twice a day. Then on top of that, in the late afternoon, we walk our dog daily.
This morning before I started working, I went for a walk around 745-8 AM. Our subdivision is like one block from a major busy road in town, so I walked out there for a bit, and the good news is, there was hardly any traffic at all. It would normally be swamped at morning rush hour.

I talked to my mom a little while ago and she filled me in on the latest conspiracy theories. Trump et al. are taking the opportunity created by COVID-19 to finally root out all human trafficking in the US once and for all. In order to do this they will shut down the internet for 3 days, sometime in the next two weeks, so that they can scrub the dark web. She wanted to make sure that I was aware because I'm in "the center of it all" here in Manhattan.

We have a lot of local shops that have begun doing delivery or order pickup and they're advertising on social media. Not sure if any smaller markets near you are doing the same. TJ's doing delivery would be a total gamechanger.
I'm "just cried to Nancy, the customer service lady from our grocery service on the phone" so that's how I'm doing today.
PDQ
DH is a nurse in an emerging hotspot and, while he doesn't work in the ICU or ER, he's already had to have his first C-19 test due to exposure from one of the doctors in their small group. DH's was negative, thank goodness, but today they're "changing protocols" and I have no idea what that means, but so far the other changes have not been positive. So, I'm a little on edge.
When our groceries showed up, we were missing a few things. Some things are always out of stock, which is fine (I've been watching Chopped for years to prepare for this) but the missing items were still on my invoice. I called customer service to get them taken off, but Nancy didn't just take them off. She spent several minutes on the phone with the driver, then hung up to call the warehouse manager and called me back. The warehouse manager is going to deliver them in the morning because they just forgot to include them. I burst into tears because one of the items they're delivering (steaks) are for a special meal that I was planning to surprise DH with for his birthday. I wanted to do something nice for him since this is definitely NOT how he'd planned on spending it. So, thank you, Nancy.

This is what I'm worried about. I placed a pickup order for 7:30pm Sunday night - it was the one and only spot available this week when I looked on Monday. I have no idea how they can possible predict on Monday at 2pm what will actually be in the store by Sunday at 7:30. We are ok on supplies but won't be able to do much in the way of actual cooking if we don't restock some things within the next week. I am worried I'm not going to be able to get most of my order and then have to go to the store on Monday anyway. I guess we'll see how it goes.

I've actually just started drinking more regularly. I don't drink much at all, although I always have a bottle of wine or two on hand. Started at 3pm on Monday and finished half the bottle for dinner. Same for Tuesday. My bedtime routine is much more pleasant now.

I’ve gotten emails from a local bakery and a local coffee shop that are offering things like produce, meat, eggs, cheese, etc, with typical orders. Maybe CSAs in North Jersey, Orange County NY, etc, can offer delivery to your area too? Maybe if you go in on a big order with neighbors?
I went to go close our community playgrounds this morning. I posted signed and put up caution tape. Not sure how one “closes” a playground. But, we also have basketball courts. Even weirder, how do you close those?! I didn’t even have a ladder to take down the nets. I did take the basketball that was sitting out. While I was taping off the playground, someone came up and started playing with the basketball. I yelled that it was closed, order of the county. He put the ball down and left. WTH do I do with the basketball?! It’s sitting in my car floorboard right now.

Tonight is my last dose of antibiotics from last week's strep. It feels good and all not drinking, but I am looking forward to having a glass of wine or a beer starting tomorrow night.
Can some of our Canadian posters talk more about their experience with how their government is dealing with COVID? So much of the news I consume is focused on the US and I’m really curious to see how other countries are attacking this problem. Are their PPE shortages? Are tests readily available, and what screening criteria are used? Do you trust your local and national government?
British Columbia here. I completely trust our Premier, all the Drs, and Trudeau. Dr Bonnie Henry has such a soothing calming voice which makes the news reports watchable for me. Plus the sign language guy is amazing and makes me smile.
There are reports of PPE shortages and testing is only for those that work in eldercare, medical settings, or people who have come in contact with those. I don’t believe there is a backlog of tests right now in BC. There’s a number to call if you’re feeling symptoms and you are meant to call before you go to the hospital.
We received a Covid awareness information sheet in the mail from the Public Health Agency of Canada yesterday which had information and phone numbers.
My main worries are not being able to access my Dr or a clinic Dr if something like an ear infection or strep throat happens to my kids. Right now you can take previous medication to pharmacies for a refill without an rx so that makes me feel better about my sons eczema cream.
There’s been various social programs implemented (BC and Federal) including rent supplements (up to $500/m), emergency EI for those that don’t qualify for regular EI (up to $2000/m), $1000 in additional funds for EI (one time payment), the Child Tax Credit is bumped up for I believe Mays payment. The regular EI program is overloaded however I’ve heard from a couple people that they have already received their first payments.
A lot of people I know have been out of work or laid off in hospitality for weeks before this was declared a Pandemic. Lack of tourists starting out for a weak summer in a tourist destination (Victoria) caused a lot of my restaurant friends to lay off and close to avoid taking on more debt before March. I am forever grateful I got out of the restaurant business last spring as this would have put me under....plus having to lay off employees with no real answers for them. The Feds did say there would be wage subsidy for laid off employees to help owners but I’m not certain how that program works.

I am currently researching CSAs and hope to join one soon even though not knowing what I'm going to get stresses me out.
I left the house for the first time in 3 weeks and got groceries. The store was stocked, people were wearing (mostly) masks, everyone was nice. I was so nervous about going out and it was fine. What a relief. It was great seeing our neighborhood in bloom too.
Now I can just worry we picked up germs for the next two weeks.

Guys, she used to be a reasonable person.
My mom thinks COVID-19 is a man-made virus that has something to do with China's nuclear program. So that's great. I was like, "Yeah, it's not man-made, they've learned enough about it to know that. Gotta go, bye!"
The main problem we are seeing in my city is the delivery/pick up spots all full. You have to schedule them a week+ out, which is fine for those who can plan/wait, but not those that have more urgent needs.
yeah, same here. But I think if they closed the stores down to the public, that would free up a lot of employees to pick and deliver orders. Now, whether or not each store has the infrastructure to handle that kind of load, I doubt it. But it's a nice idea. LOL
I’d wonder if most employees would even have vehicles to drive or even want to be a driver. That’s a lot of wear and tear on your car and liability. They’d have to to come up with some way to deliver perishables too.
