Can someone explain to me why people keep saying that the better we are about socially isolating, the sooner this will be over? I see it all the time, including on ML right now. It doesn't make any sense to me.
I understand why we need to be doing this. We need to do it so we don't overwhelm the healthcare system and it will save lives, but I don't understand how it will speed anything up. Coronavirus isn't going away anytime soon. It's not like if we all stay in our houses, it is going to be eradicated. If anything, I feel like the better we are at socially isolating, the longer this will be going on because it will take longer to work its way through the population.
To be clear, I'm not saying that we shouldn't be isolating right now. We absolutely should be doing it as it will save lives. I just don't understand why people say that the better we behave, the faster it will be over. What am I missing?

In theory under a functional government the time would be spent ramping up testing and preparing for a potential onslaught so you could track, trace and isolate cases.
We found some 8's via online from Academy. So we got those. I think they will hold me over for now. Thanks everyone. Marketplace would have been my next option to try.

Maybe they mean the faster these SIP policies will be over?
But yeah, even once SIP is over, people will still get covid-19. It's just that they're more likely to survive if they need hospitalization at a time that isn't as overwhelming for hospitals and healthcare workers.
Honestly, I have to grow to accept that I will probably get covid-19 someday, and just hope all hope that I don't get it this month or next month. But even knowing of many people who've contracted it and aren't hospitalized, it's still scary as fuck to even think about accepting that I could get it. OTOH, I don't see how I will ever become confident enough to go outside again if I don't accept that risk either.

The way the MN governor explained it is that it's largely to buy us time to make sure we have the hospital beds, ICU beds, and ventilators when we need them.
He explained that yes, just having potentially infected people stay home for however long will reduce infections, but the main goal is buying time to prepare.

What StrawberryBlondie said about buying time. I like to think that instead of buying time for hospitals to prepare (which is good and I'm glad they are), we are buying time for scientists to develop treatment and a better understanding of the virus. I know a vaccine is too far out to SIP the entire time. But, better testing and treatment may be possible in a shorter time frame!

Also good reasons to SIP! But I still don't think us behaving affects the timeline, right? That's what I keep seeing people say, "if people would just stay home and follow the rules, we will be back out of our houses that much faster". I'm trying to figure out why people think it gets us out of our houses faster. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm arguing. I'm not. I really am trying to understand why I keep seeing that statement. I sure would like it to be true!

I don't think it does mean we will be out faster.
I think people are frustrated, especially if they are doing their part and others are ignoring the orders.
Our school district just closed for the rest of the year, before the state has said anything. They are saying our peak week for infections will be the last week of April.
I am way more emotional about this than I thought I would be. I teach 4 classes of seniors and my heart is absolutely breaking for them.
H saw Blago jogging today when he went to go water his pianos at his studio.
ALSO, I got FULLY (top-up) dressed today in a real bra, shirt, blazer, full makeup, and sort of hair (but having bad hair day) because I was supposed to be recording a virtual conference session, but the host dude had a bad connection, so we had to reschedule. I am SO annoyed because scheduling these sessions have been the biggest pain in the ass due to everyone's fucked up schedules, and I've been stressing about it all week. UGH!

So if I look at the one projection site covid19.healthdata.org/projections it looks like if we can get our shit together through the end of May we have a chance to lower the R0 number (I'm assuming) to slow it down. But honestly, I don't know if this could last until the end of May.

Do pianos get watered, or is that a typo?
LOL not a typo.
That's what I call it when he goes to fill the humidifiers at the studio so the pianos don't get all dried out (which causes them to go out of tune more quickly and can seriously damage the instrument). He has a humidifier for the space, and then a special humidifier for each piano called the dampp chaser system which regulates the moisture all up in the pianos.
I work in healthcare education. I was zooming with an ER doc that I am good friends with. He was distracted and I was like “oh hey why are you in your clinical office. I didn’t think you were on shift today”. And he was like, I am in today to figure out this life hack. And basically he showed me how he was going to use a rubber band to make his face mask fit more securely.
I am so fucking pissed that these, brave, brilliant people are having to use fucking rubber bands because they don’t have proper ppe. It is a disgrace.
One of the most confounding things about the Trump era is that there exists a woman that fucks Jared Kushner. I don’t care that she is pure evil. Like, why. How?

Maybe because I grew up in s fl with a shitton of humidity, but I never knew this, and I've played since I was 6 practicing every day well into college. Not even my grandparents who had an antique, so old it actually had real ivory and ebony leys, and not even they had a humidifier for it. I'm dude they would have if the tinder ir specialist rebuilders had suggested it. It makes sense, though, knowing how pliable wood is and how that affects sound.
I have several comments about posts in this thread. I think using cast iron skillets for weights is genious. I have never heard the term "watering pianos" before today. I love the bandana mask video.
The COVID data tracker site has CO with 107-ish deaths and one local news station said that we have 97. That's more accurate than I was hoping it would be.
One of the first people I was introduced to in the cancer twitter world, was this lady who runs a charity for retreats. But, her thing is road trips. And she is continuing to tweet about travel. Like constantly. It’s really starting to irritate me.

My husband and I are arguing over which grocery store he is planning on going to. I feel both unhinged/paranoid and like he's being cavalier.
He wants to get matzah for Passover and the only place that sells it near us is the super crowded grocery. I don't think it's worth the risk. We have 2 boxes of egg matzah from last year. A neighbor also offered us a box of plain matzah from her 5-pack.
The main customer of the company my brother works for is a workspace share company. That company just lost a multibillion investment. Right now he still has a job but damn they're losing most of their revenue since that customer is no longer buying anything.

Admittedly, it is not an official phrase. That’s just what I call it cuz I’m a weirdo. H just calls it “refilling the humidifiers,” but that’s not as fun.
I used up the last of my flour this weekend between making crackers, cookies, and chicken fried jackfruit, buuuuut I may have found a solution to the shortage!
Apparently some dude in my area locally sources and mills flour! I just sent him an email, so fingers crossed!
For those of you in need, maybe there are some local millers in your area?

I have some friends (bakeries) selling flour, sugar, etc. so that's another place to check.
