If you've made both the pleated and shaped styles, do you find that one fits better than the other? Or one is easier to make?
Both H and I like the shapes ones better. I found it easier to make for some weird reason. I suspect the square, pleated ones are easier for most people. I had issues with pleats.

Add me to the list of people overwhelmed with conflicting advice over what is good material. And of course most of what is recommended is quickly becoming unavailable.
I ended up searching Joann's website for things made of polypropylene (the stuff the blue towels are made of), and identified a product I already have at home: stabilizer for machine embroidery. Not that I'm in any position to actually test it, obviously, but it does seem to have similar breathability and texture to masks I've used for dirty home construction projects. I'll probably sandwich a couple layers some between some comfortable fabric and some cute fabric.
I don't know if I had a giant face, or weirdly positioned ears, or what, but I tried this method and it was an epic failure for me. I have a bandana I bought in college, from Walmart - so standard size, nothing weird and kind of stiff fabric, and it kept wanting to fall all apart when I picked it up to put it on. Then when I was trying to put it around my ears it was way too small - like about to rip my ears off with the hair ties too small. By the time I'd adjusted it to that it wasn't too small, it was missing the extra layers it needed and it felt like it was going to just slip off my face.
I'm sure it's working for most people because I keep seeing variants of it (including ones that the same idea but folded differently) and those failed for me too.
It didn’t work for me either. I ordered from Etsy.
Uhhh. No. Was I supposed to? The night I did it I couldn’t get her video tutorial to work so I just went from the website description
I’m not sure if she says to (I didn’t read her description, just printing the pattern for cutting). But when sewing, you should always clip into the seam allowance along corners and curves. blog.treasurie.com/clip-corners-curves/ This explains it a bit. Just one of those sewing things, that some pattern makers might assume you know.
Guess what? It *does* say "clip curve along seam allowance." But I didn't know what that meant, and it's not visible in her close-up photo if you don't know what you're looking for. So I skipped that step. LOL. I'm doing it on this current mask though. Thanks again.

If you're down to try the pattern again there's a video higher up in the tutorial that shows it step by step.
Has anyone actually had success with the no-sew with hair elastics? I've tried various things for the loops and this thing isn't going to stay on my face at all.
Sort of. I am using flannel and the ties pulled on my ears. I cut the second one with long sides, to reach behind my head, used two hair ties to bunch the sides and then used a hair tie to hold the ends together like a ponytail. It fit better that way, too, since it’s adjustable.
Update: It turns out I *do* have a sheet to sacrifice to the cause. Way back in the day we used to live in a condo and we had these stupid high up windows in our bedroom that I hung two twin sheets on to block the light and that subsequently got all bleached out. One I had repurposed into a paint drop cloth, and I thought I'd put the other in textile recycling years ago, but it turns out I'm a craft hoarding pack rat, and I found it at the bottom of my "maybe I could craft with this" bag.
I also found two pillow cases, a couple of pairs of scrapped lounge pants that are also a stiffer weave than t-shirt jersey.
I also dug through my sewing box and realized the extra pack of needles I thought might contain more machine needles are actually a hand needle variety pack.
But, my fabric is washing and now that I don't need a ballpoint needle, I can at least attempt to get started tomorrow.
AdaraMarie, ohgillian, Bernadine - re: scarf/hair-tie failures, you are all making me feel better about maybe not having such a huge face after all LOL!
I just sorted through my fabric stash like a week ago and I have literally 2 large boxes of quilting cotton that I don't want to hang on to anymore. It was going to be donated, but if anyone wants it for masks I'll ship some to you as soon as I'm not sick (dunno what it is, not severe enough for me to jump immediately to OMG IT'S COVID.) It's mostly Japanese style fat quarters from my MIL's collection (she passed away 10 years ago and as the only other sewer in the family it all came to me. And I've been storing it. For 10 years.)
This no-sew method was really easy and fits pretty nicely. myhaymac.com/2020/04/01/easy-and-fast-no-sew-face-mask/ My old tshirts that I found to use aren’t very thick, but I think with the folded layers it’s a decent attempt.

Huh! Thanks. Interesting. I may try this too. I think I read that tee shirt isn't that great of a material choice (but don't quote me, I didn't re-check this) but maybe a non-jersey layer could be added.

So I made this one just now and DH liked it a lot! He was wanting one for tomorrow and plans to use this one. Thanks again for the link. I still plan to try a few others but at almost 9 pm I"m glad I've got tomorrow covered.

I made a pleated one first and did not like the way it fit, and I had issues getting the pleats right. The rest of them I have made have been the fitted kind, and I like them much better.
I don't have elastic and like the option to have ties. It's also got an easier 'pocket' idea for a filter. I think I have floral wire for the nose shaping too.
eta: It also has different size options.
Thanks for posting this. I tried this pattern last night and it works well.
The only downside of the pattern that I've been using is that it takes awhile, and this one is faster. I have a long list of family members that I'm making masks for, so having a faster pattern in the mix is good.
And thanks to everybody who is sharing their options, it is really helpful.
Also, a reminder to anyone who is shipping these to other people, if you have a printer, you can print postage from usps.com so that all you have to do at the post office is drop off the package, not interact with anyone. There is also an option in a lot of places for USPS to pick up a package to get it on its way, I've used it before and you just put the package out at the mailbox.
litebright- You're welcome! It seemed like a good mix of fit and ease. I'm making for a few people and am hoping to offer it to my fellow food service people doing delivery, if I get fast enough. (I got it from another former local board member.) Did you see how she makes pleats using her seam ripper to turn the fabric as she sews? I haven't tried that yet but am tempted.

Thanks for posting this! After a little trial and error I made some out of some flannel that DH finds way more comfortable than the hair tie option.
I’ve never posted a pic before, sorry if it is huge. Mine are pretty basic 9x6 quilters cotton. I did put interfacing I had in my stash as a middle layer. I made a few more and used those hair ties that are basically fabric elastic that are knotted. I made one with a pipe cleaner, but as I was making a bunch, it was too putsy.
Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good. We’re in uncharted territory and worst case it reminds you not to touch your face. You are all awesome.
Has anybody seen the no sew LLR leggings one? I think I am going to try it today. But with some old black pairs since hell no to wearing LLR patterns as a face mask.

Don’t you need a scale too though?
Yes, you'd need some way to estimate the weight. I use a kitchen scale, or a bathroom one if it's a heavier package.

Thank you for this!!! My dad has cochlear implant‘s and we were trying to find something that would not interfere too much.
Add me to the list of people overwhelmed with conflicting advice over what is good material. And of course most of what is recommended is quickly becoming unavailable.

I read that vacuum cleaner bags are another thing that works well to block viruses when used in the pocket masks.

I have a neck warmer (I call them a turtle, but google is telling me that may not be the real name for them) that I can pull up over my nose/mouth. I'm planning to just use that, or the wild-west bandanna depending on which feels less ridiculous next time I go out.
Guys, you've inspired me. I took inventory on my fabric and last night posted on FB that I was going to make masks today and opened myself to taking orders from my friends
I now have 30+ orders. One friend is working at the polls on Tuesday for our primary, another is a nurse at a local prison, another is a hospice nurse.

My 11 year old is helping. Let's do this!!
I’m surprised the polls are still open. Which state?
