Any recommendations for soft, comfortable, washable kid masks? The kids will be going to the daycare center in July, and ages 6+ are required to wear a mask at all times (not sure how they'll manage that, but that's their problem), and the homemade ones we have are just not very comfortable for more than 10-20 minutes at a time.
Need something that won't make me wait weeks for shipment (I still haven't received the adult ones I ordered in early May), and making them is definitely not on my agenda at this point.
I made some--no-sew--out of too small kids long underwear/base layers. I used the legs and cut out a section to fit the face to make a tube. I cut a thin strip from the the leftover leg. Cut it open so it was a long strip not a tube. I slid the strip into the tube and tied the strip in a knot in a loop to fit over the ears. It took me a couple tries to get it right but it only took about 5 minutes or less to make.
They are soft and the ear pieces are also soft and stretchy-not elastic. Leggings would work great too.
mae0111... I actually ordered 5 of those style for DH and I to split. Neither of us were fans (they don't stay well up over the nose without covering the eyes, in our case. I haven't returned them yet, but it never occurred to me to try it for DD and see how it goes.
k3am, I got a few other masks from Zulily, but it took literally 6 weeks to get them. And they were supposed to be for me, but they were way to small. Otherwise I haven't had a lot of luck. Maybe Etsy? There are a TON of people making them around here and selling through Facebook, Nextdoor, etc. That was going to be my plan until the too-small adult masks showed up.
The Bobo bands are good if they just need to pull up quickly and pull back down. We haven't tried them yet, so I'm not sure how they work. If they can't use them, I'll keep them for when I'm walking or jogging and I'm too close to people - I can just pull up until I'm clear of whoever is around me.
My sister just sent me a link to masks from Joah Love.. in stock and shipping from LA, processing plus maybe a day or two at most. Pricey, but they look pretty comfy.
I just gave them all my money and bought 7 (4 for DD, 3 for DH and I to split.) The kids ones are neutral enough that if DS decides he wants one, it will work for him too.
I ended up ordering from a few different Etsy sellers - Mickey Mouse for the toddler, Star Wars for DS1 and a pretty pattern for DD. Plus an assortment for DH and me. I should probably wash them ever
I realize you already have them, but for others I picked up a 2 pack from Target today. They fit my taller than average 7 year old well. It looks uncomfortable on my taller than average 9 year old, but he also had his hearing aids in. He can wear the tie around the head ones at school (I still need to find a better pair for that), and the around the ears one when he gets a hair cut.
I made a mask with really long elastics. I used the headband size rubber bands on each side. DD likes to loop them around her ponytail as she doesn't like it behind her ears. I can see this style working really good for long time use aka school day or even working a long shift. I'm hoping to talk my friend into making me a few more masks as hers are way better made them mine. Right now she is burnt out and making masks is depressing for her.
For my tie masks, I do a full or half pony and tie over the pony tail, so it doesn't slide down the back of my head. If it pulls on my ears all day, I would have a problem with that, so that is why I got the tie, but then they wouldn't stay up. This one didn't pull on DD's ears, and I couldn't tell with DS. Mask fit is important if they need them for 5-6 hours at school. I've been doing 4 hours, but will have to go up to 7 hours in a few weeks.
waverly, I prefer the ties, too. But neither of my kids can tie their own, so I got masks with adjustable ear loops.
Mine can’t tie their own either which is why I picked up the loops for school, but if it’s a problem with DS’s hearing aids to have loops than maybe his teacher can tie his as part of his accommodation. His hearing itinerant teacher could help with that, but schools haven’t announced masks here yet. I want to be prepared though because you know as soon as schools announce masks they are going to be scarce again.
My friend is selling masks on etsy and she gives options on what you want (ties, ears, behind the head). She's is also doing a matching one for my daughter and her American Girl Doll. My friend said she may start selling those soon, so if you kiddo would like one ask. www.etsy.com/shop/KatsCornerAttic
