I haven't found a clip yet, but a young woman named Zoe, a peaceful protester in Mnpls, on MSNBC was just interviewed. She was so emotional, talking about the charges not being enough. She's a young black woman, that does not want to be afraid. It was very powerful and everyone needs watch and understand the pain our fellow Americans, people of color, are in and have been in for 400 years. My god, if people can't grasp the bone deep sorrow and suffering, our humanity is lost.
Can any legal people tell us non-legal people what "aiding and abetting 2nd degree murder" means in Minnesota?
It is basically felony murder. Just like an accomplice in a robbery that goes bad and the clerk is killed. They are just as complicit as the shooter.
I hope that he is also charged with the lesser manslaughter as well because I think straight 2nd degree will be tough with a jury, unfortunately.
Normal disclaimer legal crap, lol. I could be wrong but I think this falls under federal now, right? Or is the state AG charging? Even so, most statues are very similar but I am in PA.
UnitedHealthcare Group to donate $10M to help clean up Minneapolis neighborhoods and to pay for George Floyd's children's higher education. They also pledge 25,000 hours of community service toward rebuilding.
Also, Bombas socks just sent an email that, in support of BLM, they are donating $250,000 to five nonprofit organizations selected by their Black employees.
(As and aside, I had no idea Bombas was successful enough to make that big a donation!)

I agree with this. Again, I'm not a criminal lawyer, so this is not my wheelhouse, but I looked at what is required under the second and third degree murder statutes in Minnesota, and I think the requisite intent for second degree murder could be tough with a jury. But I recognize there's a lot we still don't know about Derek Chauvin and what his motivations might have been.
609.19 MURDER IN THE SECOND DEGREE.
Subdivision 1.Intentional murder; drive-by shootings. Whoever does either of the following is guilty of murder in the second degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 40 years:
(1) causes the death of a human being with intent to effect the death of that person or another, but without premeditation; or (2) causes the death of a human being while committing or attempting to commit a drive-by shooting
609.195 MURDER IN THE THIRD DEGREE.
(a) Whoever, without intent to effect the death of any person, causes the death of another by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life, is guilty of murder in the third degree and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than 25 years.
I am a criminal defense attorney and if I was his attorney, they will try to only allow jury instructions on 2nd. IMO, and I said it before, that will be difficult to prove and why you don’t want to have a lower charge, because if the jurors don’t agree on 2nd they will usually concede with the lower charge. It is amazing that literally everything in law is all strategy.
Ignoring the clear intent of why it was there and hovering so close to the crowd..... this could have been really bad if the helicopter lost control, mechanical issues, etc.
The National Guard of the District of Columbia is investigating the use of one of its helicopters to make a “show of force” against protesters near the White House.
One of the TNR groups in town posted about the inequity in the animal rescue world and included a link to a study on the under representation of African Americans in animal rescue. It's the only statement I've seen which isn't surprising given the under representation.
The protests here have finally led to two of the largest law enforcement organizations in the county banning carotid restraints. One small step that should've happened long before. I'm grateful to all of the protestors who helped this come to fruition with their consistent presence.
A full autopsy of George Floyd, the handcuffed black man who died after being restrained by Minneapolis police, was released Wednesday and provides several clinical details, including that Floyd had previously tested positive for COVID-19.
The 20-page report released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office came with the family’s permission and after the coroner’s office released summary findings Monday that Floyd had a heart attack while being restrained by officers, and classified his May 25 death as a homicide.
...
The report by Chief Medical Examiner Andrew Baker spelled out clinical details, including that Floyd had tested positive for COVID-19 on April 3 but appeared asymptomatic. The report also noted Floyd’s lungs appeared healthy but he had some narrowing of arteries in the heart.
Back to the Richmond Lee statue (I literally couldn't sleep last night over how big this is). A comparison (and if you haven't seen it in real life, note the mansions behind it for scale):
NYTimes trying hard to become the “failing NY Times” after posting an op ed by Senator Cotton encouragingly g the use of military to stop the protests. Their employees are pissed.
I have been waiting over an hour for a text back to cancel my subscription, so my guess is they are flooded. Not linking the original to avoid more clicks, but here is a link to the CNN article.
Tonight Kwame Alexander, Jacqueline Woodson, Jason Reynolds, and many other Black and POC YA and children's book authors are holding a rally for Black lives on Facebook Live via the Brown Bookshelf. They're going to be aiming their conversation at kids from 7:00-7:45 ET, and at parents and other adults from 7:45-8:30.

I'm absolutely livid over the talking point that the right has started pushing about cities being lawless, decaying centers of insurrection. It's racist, and it's being pushed to justify increased police brutality and military presence. The military is basically occupying DC right now, and it feels like it's only a matter of minutes before Cotton's fantasy of just shooting protesters becomes true here.

I cancelled when they published their "Nazi Nextdoor Piece." It's clear that they are interested in upholding the opinions of white supremacists on their paper. I refuse to give my money to support dangerous rhetoric.
This is the sort of shit that will get more people killed.
