Failed the 1 hour. Have to go for the 3 hour tomorrow morning. Not looking forward to it! Does anybody know - do they draw blood 3, or 4 times? I have to be there at 6:30 in the morning! My OB was extremely vague on instruction. Like, didn’t give any, but said I need to do it this week. Is diet soda ok? I generally stick to just water and milk but have had annoying cravings for soda creep up every so often. Any advice for the next 14-15 hours is appreciated! I don’t want to falsely fail the 3 hour just because I didn’t fast long enough, or fasted too long.
I would absolutely call your doctor or the lab for more detailed instructions.
When I had the 3 hour test done, I was told to fast for 8 hours beforehand. Water only, both before and during the test. I had four blood draws total - One before the drink and one at each hour mark after. When I showed up at the lab to start the test, the tech verified that I met all of the fasting requirements to allow the test to be accurate.
Fast at least eight hours before the appointment. I kept the food and drinks I consumed the 24-hrs prior to the 3-hr test all low in carbs and sugar (not at a diabetic level, but lower than my usual cravings want). I don't know if that helped me pass, but my levels passed in all four tests.
I brought along a water bottle to sip on while I waited, and it was helpful. ETA - bring a snack for after the last draw. You might feel pretty crappy by then, and a snack will help a lot!
If you are able, find out where you'll be expected to wait for each hour's draw. I didn't have a room to wait in at the lab, and just went back and forth from my car since I wanted to limit exposure in the waiting area at the clinic.
This advice is too late now, but I have failed the one-hour by a good chunk and then went on to pass the 3 hr with flying colors twice now, and both times I actually upped my carbs leading up to the test. (Reason being that they say if you naturally eat lower carb, the drink can shock your system. By introducing carbs leading up to it, your body has a chance to adjust and make the proper insulin. If you have GD it won’t make it, so it’s not going to give you a false negative if you truly have GD.) Nothing to eat or drink other than water for 8-10 hrs beforehand. My lab (both times, and they were different labs) said that I couldn’t even have water during the test (even though my OB said I could.) Like others have said, you’ll have 4 blood draws and make sure you have something on hand to eat when you are done.
