Can I see your small bathrooms? I need ideas!

Unfortunately I will not be running the Boston Marathon or the distance medley this year as the Marathon has been cancelled. This gives me about $600 in refunds...

I have been wanting to redo my small and outdated bathroom; was planning on saving up to do it this year if I got a higher paying job, but then COVID happened. My friend suggested I put the $600 towards the bathroom reno. Obviously $600 will not cover the whole project; I will save to pay for the rest. 

My bathroom is super small! If you have a small bathroom, can I see pictures for inspiration? Thank you!

Ours is hideous 90s, but we did recently update the vanity to this one from ikea.

I like it because it fits in the space and has very spacious drawers, which is necessary since there’s literally no other place to put things. Most vanities like that seem to have really shallow drawers. Our bathroom is literally the vanity, a toilet right next to it (I mounted a toilet paper holder to the vanity itself) and a shower right next to the toilet. There’s probably 4 square feet of floor space to move around. It’s tiiiiiny.

We will eventually swap out the flooring, install a walk in shower (no tub) with a glass door that opens toward the wall and probably just misses the toilet, and replace the mirror with something more substantial and finished looking. I could also see doing two stacked shelves above the toilet, purely decorative to add some texture and contrast. I’m standing in the tub in the last photo.

We have a CRAZY small bathroom underneath our steps. It’s big enough for a toilet and corner sink. I can’t wait to re do it. My husband has *feelings* about knocking out a closet to make it bigger and I’m adamantly against it. You just need to pee there; let’s not make this more than it needs to be. We have three other full bathrooms....

Anyway, curious to see pics, too!

My cousin has a similar half bath. It's so cute. She painted it like a midnight blue and even though it's a small space, it totally works. I love a bold color or bold wallpaper in a small bathroom.

This is our only bathroom on the first floor - we do have a second full bath in the basement, but this one is our "main" bath. It is small for being a full bath- I sometimes stand inside the tub to do my hair.

Here’s one we just finished. I wouldn’t say it’s small, but a standard Size bathroom. It’s an en-suite in a guest room

My whole condo is only 530 sq feet. That is for a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. So SMALL.. lol.

I looked at IKEA and I don't remember seeing this vanity. Thank you for posting it!

melmel48 Thank you! This house hasn’t been touched since it was built in the early 90s. It has all the wallpaper.
We are now working on the powder room. We removed the hideous wallpaper over the long weekend.

I don't have pics because it's far from done but if you have an IKEA, their sinks/vanities are fantastic for small bathrooms. When I bought my house it had a giant vanity. I couldn't open one of the doors because it would hit the toilet. I got this vanity: www.ikea.com/us/en/p/lillangen-sink-cabinet-with-2-doors-white-ensen-faucet-s09293918/. It's smaller but I can store about as much. (I just counted the floor tiles and it looks like the bathroom floor area is about 28 sq ft. I didn't include the bathtub area, but it's not a big tub.)

We had a small bathroom in Peru where you couldn't turn around in the shower, so someone else had to shut the shower door.  .  I cannot find the pictures though.

Like TR said, we did a complete gut reno 2 years ago in our (only) full bath. It is about 96”x96”. Pretty standard original layout for a 1985 house, but felt small when we were in the reno process and looking at all these inspo pics on houzz, etc. Lol for days at free standing tubs and separate showers. Magazine bathrooms are like the size of our master bedroom.

We made some fundamental changes to the layout and spent what felt like forever with my kitchen & bath designer FIL trying to put all the pieces together in a way that fit in the bathroom footprint and stayed within code. In the end everything (toilet, double sinks, storage cabinet, tub/shower combo) fit except everyone’s towel hooks, which ended up in the hall outside the door. We had to go with a 54” tub instead of standard 60” to make it work. The budget wasn’t pretty when we finished with the layout changes, the odd size pieces, and a couple splurge finishes on my part, but two years later I do enjoy it.

Mine was an emergency "remodel" after water damage, so it's not great, and the cabinet is 100% not the one I asked for, but here...



This was the before, so it really is a huge improvement.



My downstairs bathroom is even smaller, just barely enough room for a small shower stall, toilet, and sink.


I'll be building my own house (soon, I hope), with a couple small bathrooms, and have been taking photos when I stay places to get ideas.

I have another set of photos from an older house I stayed in in Portland, but it took several pics to get the layout. Basically, clawfoot tub to the right of door, toilet to the left of door in the corner, but at an angle (so it would have room on each side), and a corner sink in the other corner. Cute little in-the-wall cabinets with old-timey doors.

Ha! OP’s small bathroom is probably bigger than mine but I feel like if you need more than one photo to fit it all in, it’s not that small. 😂

Oh, thanks for this. This looks to be the size of our master bath except we have a curtain for the shower instead of a door. I want a door so bad but wasn't sure how it would work in a small bathroom. But it looks possible

Mine is also under stairs. It is really odd. I hit my head on the part that goes under the stairs a lot.

Thank you everyone! Some of these bathrooms appear bigger than mine, but it is hard to tell. The whole condo is only 530 sq feet! Eat in kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom under the stairs. The first floor is the kitchen and bathroom and the living room and bedroom are upstairs.. so the bathroom is tucked under the stairs.

Yours might be smaller but I think ours are on the small side. When we had water damage to our upstairs bathroom in November, we ended up splitting it into two bathrooms to give ourselves a master bathroom. The pink bath is the hall bath and is 5x7. The blue bath is our master and is smaller than that.

Basically, IKEA will be your friend. They were our best options for small sinks and vanities, especially for our master bath. And in the pink bathroom, I really love the Hemnes drawer vanity! To maximize storage for the master we got an Elfa door shelving unit from the Container Store. Sorry for the pics, not sure why they are sideways.

This is not my bathroom but it’s very very similar. I swear someone came in and was like “force a bathroom under the steps!”
