DS's daycare is affiliated with a private school that would be about 2x what we pay for before/aftercare. I'm almost 100% confident they'll be open for fulltime instruction, but not at all confident that they'll have spaces.
sdlaura, the district is doing a WebEx today to give us some minor updates and then is supposed to give a better update by 7/1.
I tolerate DS's daycare. If we had other options that weren't signfiicantly more expensive or inconvenient, we'd move him. But actually, coronavirus daycare has shown me I don't dislike his daycare, I just REALLY DISLIKE the office folks. Right now, we don't even have to go into the office, just the class, and I'm really liking it.
I can’t work from home once we are open to the public. This is a public facing job.
My options are put them in some kind of childcare on the off days, hire a babysitter, go part time or take a leave of absence. I vote they go to school 5 days a week, but apparently I’m not in charge.
DH is not stressed about the fall from a logistics standpoint, because I will handle everything. It's fine - it's my job. I cut way back on my consulting work. Even when I was working more, we barely noticed what I was bringing in. So I will deal with all of the crazy schedules and PPE and whatever else.
As far as working from home, DH and I both WFH anyway, when he's not traveling. We joke that DH's basement office is {Company name} world headquarters. But my old company was awesome about WFH. My old boss especially. Which is weird because I worked for a 150+ year old bank and they tend to be stuffy. I'd heard that they were swinging very far the other way immediately after I left, and they were revoking WFH privileges right up until the stay at home orders. Now, the pendulum has swung the other way... and they want to let go of a lot of their office space and let people work from home on a full-time basis. It makes a ton of sense. Traffic is awful here, there's no public transportation within a mile of the building, and commercial real estate is insane. DH's old company in the same city has said WFH until September - and they NEVER let ANYONE work from home. So hopefully they'll start to do it more often...
Well, my state just basically reopened everything, including amusement parks. Amusement parks will reopen on June 29, so 4th of July weekend is going to be complete chaos here. I feel like in person school is either a very real possibility given how they just opened it all, or things will implode and there's not a chance that we'll be back in person as a result of opening everything back up.
... so our district of 30,000 kids is hosting a WebEx to discuss fall reopening. They limited the WebEx to 1,000.
I’m just over this. Our district put together the shittiest distance learning program - and prohibited teachers from trying to teach! - and this is just an indicator of things to come.
And next year should be okay budget wise, but after that? Teachers are going to be asked to get by on a shoestring budget.
twinmomma - I was just talking to my neighbor about how the little kid amusement parks in your state are opening, and the little kid amusement park in my state is not. So... yeah... everyone is coming your way.
A teacher at my kids’ school just went on Facebook and said they’re talking about 100% remote for any kid that changes classes (Not art etc but middle school kids moving from math to ELA to science)... But DD1 would change between 2 classrooms... so I don’t know if she will go back or not.. SHE NEEDS TO GO BACK!!
The feedback from people who made it onto the call is that our district has no idea what they’re doing and that there’s no money to do anything anyways...

I fully expect my town's number to explode. Traffic is bad enough here in the summer, if we're the only thing open... We're Screwed.
My firm is implementing phase 1 of reopening offices starting July 6th, up to 25% capacity, and it’s completely voluntary. We have 200 people and offices in 6 states on both coasts, and a London office. There will be one-way hallways, every morning you have to fill out a health questionnaire, we all have unlimited sick time this year, you have to wear a mask whenever you’re not at your desk/in your office, etc etc. It seems well thought out.
Our CEO talked about how we’ve determined that physically being in the office is important for collaboration, but we plan to be very flexible for everyone’s comfort level, childcare needs, etc. I think overall they’ve handled this situation very well. I’ll be on maternity leave through August and only going in for important meetings, but after that I could see going in 3-4 days a week, depending on what happens with school.
twinmomma, amusement parks are all opening here during July. Disneyland, legoland, sea world. We have legoland passes and may check it out sometime, mainly because we live 20 min away and can just leave immediately if it’s too crowded or feels unsafe.
sdlaura I live about a mile from the main one here. Not anywhere near the scale of the ones near you at all, but still very popular for everyone from all the New England states. I'm very curious to see what kind of capacity restrictions they have and how they manage it.
I need to go fill out the district survey about distance learning and school for the fall. The governors messaged didn't make it sound like normal school will happen and she basically stated that she can force full distance learning at any moment. DD says she doesn't want to go back if it is distance. I don't think my mental health could handle full on distance learning either. Dh could care less as it doesn't effect him at all.
Governor has also halted all counties from progressing in opening because of case spikes. Our state was having 10 or less cases per day the last 4 days have all been over 100 cases. Most of those cases they have been able to trace to job sites or families. Traffic has been horrible and the people out are not distancing at all.
This is the message we got today from the principal. I’m feeling a little more hopeful.
What will school look like when we return? Today’s thoughts!
We, too, hope the rumors of a return to a fully open school this fall prove to be true. The County has not yet allowed for greater numbers in class, and the CA Dept of Ed guidance still speaks of mostly hybrid model planning. However, we do see CA and the Dept of Ed guidance starting to make gradual shifts in language that would allow counties to open schools when safe in those counties. Our planning has taken a definite shift since Monday towards imagining what school and classrooms would look like with distancing when possible in a class of 24 and 31. I say “when possible” because it is not possible to distance at all times when all students are in attendance, and that is the grey area in which we are planning and operating right now. Typically, states will advise “should”, “may”, and “when possible”, while counties say “will”, “won’t”, and “must”. In our planning between now and August 17, we are planning to be ready for either possibility: A fully open model, or an A/B model. I pledge to continue to update you when we have further guidance (and also to let you know when we frustratingly don’t!)
