I hate Trump. A lot. As much as the next person on this board. But so what if he can’t drink a glass of water with one hand? I get that the way he went on about at the rally was unhinged, but the “trolling” and making fun is ableism. A person’s ability to drink with one hand means nothing about their value. And yes, I know he’s made fun of people with disabilities in the past. Still doesn’t mean we should stoop to his level. Focus on the number of actually horrible bullshit Trump is doing.

Yeah this. I didn’t understand the drinking with a cup thing until I looked it up. (I didn’t watch anything about the rally just saw people talking about the drinking out the cup). Seems a pretty shitty thing to go after.

I lurk so didn’t want to say anything, but yeah. That ad is ablist as fuck.
Also, not for nothing, but standing outside at those graduations is VERY taxing. It’s hot, it’s a busy schedule, not much time to hydrate, and the standing and saluting is a lot. Generals who are decades younger and in much better physical condition struggle with it. Trump’s no newbie to this, he’s done one every year so you’d think he’d be a little more prepared.
He’s an idiot. He could just say “Look, it’s a long, hard, hot day, and I struggled this year, but it’s important to me to salute every graduate.” He certainly didn’t need to spend 15 minutes telling 6200 fans his whole long sob story. But he can’t stand looking weak, which is in and of itself a huge character flaw.

Well now, I didn't see that. Thanks for pointing it out. Given that on the 2016 campaign trail 45 actively and aggressively mocked a reporter in ableist fashion I thought only of Ted Lieu as calling out hypocrisy. But, as you describe, he did it in an ableist way. So, 2 wrongs not making a right.

I've had to drink like that on occasion due to side effects of a med I was on. Sometimes people have noticed and ask if im ok. I say, yep, healthy, this just happens due to meds. End of story, everyone moves on.
Where I think of trump differently is first and foremost his disgusting mocking of a reporter. Second, like villainv said, he could respond "yep, it was hot, I was tired, but this was important, etc" instead of going on a rant about silk ties and demonstrating to adulation. He's the one who equates it with fitness and strength and derides any sign of weakness (or what he thinks is weak). Think how he went after Hillary for passing out with the flu. It was a non issue but he viciously attacked.
It may not be the right thing to do, but we're human, and seeing someone so cruel and hypocritical getting a taste of their own bitter medicine is primally satisfying. But, yeah, not the best look to do in front of a broad audience.

So I follow some disabled folks on Twitter, and they are really pissed off at people mocking Trump for needing two hands to drink water and walking down the ramp. They have said it‘a ablism, and it reiterated that the world thinks disabled people are inferior.

Yeah. Throwing disabled people under the bus is nothing new, but people who are at least pretending to be inclusive and, well, decent should know better.
Make fun of 45 for being an evil fascist, not because he can’t hold a cup or walk down stairs.

*people with disabilities
Sorry, pet peeve.
They refer to themselves as disabled people. Why is this not appropriate? (Genuine question as I want to make sure I understand)

People first language is considered more respectful.
If I'm talking about groups, I try to use people first, e.g. "People experiencing homelessness in the U.S. ..."
Of course I try to learn and use the way individuals prefer to be referred to when taking about individuals. Groups are not a monolith and there will certainly be differences of opinion.

I added an article on the other post. The author does highlight the bottom part of your post about listening to whomever you are speaking with or about.

I don’t have time to link an article but a group of disabled people just posted a whole thing about how they prefer to be called disabled people. Most people on twitter refer to themselves as disabled people that I’ve seen.
There was recently a poster on here who has a disabled kid and she also said the same thing, that she and her group in the disabled community prefer it that way as well. So as far as I’m aware in regards to the disabled community referring to them as disabled people is 100% ok and correct.

Sorry to post it and not return to respond. I didn't think of it this way so I apologise. I'm happy to delete it but I think keeping it for education is a good idea. Thank you for letting me know. I wasn't thinking about the impact on others, just on Trump.
krystee , can you post the reference for the donor list?
I’ll look and post when I find it or delete it I don’t! It was posted by a local politics group that is generally strict on sourcing so I forgot to double check that this one had it.
ETA: this isn’t exactly easy to double check and confirm, but here is a source list:

This is not universal. Many disabled people prefer disability first language.
ETA - Never mind responding here. I see a new thread dedicated to primaries was started when I was writing this post!
Does anyone from Kentucky post on this board? I'm very curious to hear how the voting process is going so far. I watch Today and was disappointed to hear nothing this morning about Kentucky's primary.

LL Bean is on that list, but the woman who donated is one of the granddaughters of the original founder and does not represent the company's stance. That is very different from a CEO of a company donating to the Trump campaign. How can we differentiate between those types of scenarios?

This is all good to know. Thank you for the articles!
In education, we were taught always to use people first.

Please don’t delete it. I think it’s a great teaching/learning exercise. And my snippiness (if anyone noticed it) wasn’t directed at you or anyone on here, it was more of a whine to the universe.
If you like to vote with your dollar, here are Trump’s top donors.
Thanks for sharing. I was shocked to see Aveda on there. I posted something about it on their facebook page. We'll see if it is removed.
Aveda is owned by Estée Lauder and one of the four Lauder heirs (all 4 are on the board, the one noted above isn’t even the chairman) is a trump donor. What is Aveda supposed to do?
