Thanks for sharing. I was shocked to see Aveda on there. I posted something about it on their facebook page. We'll see if it is removed.
Aveda is owned by Estée Lauder and one of the four Lauder heirs (all 4 are on the board, the one noted above isn’t even the chairman) is a trump donor. What is Aveda supposed to do?
I didn't realize that they were owned by Estee Lauder until I saw that post. I don't actually expect Aveda to do anything of course. That doesn't mean that I'm not bothered by the fact that the parent company is donating to Trump when Aveda mentions their commitment to the environment in their mission statement.
We had an open meeting for OC Board of Supervisors today. I watched some of the public speakers and was like a mix of BLM, defund the police, anti-maskers, pro police.
The BLM/defund the police peeps turned the outside protests into a dance party.
It also has huge implications for a lot of military families with single parents or both parents in the military, who rely on au pairs for childcare. Traditional childcare options, including those offered on base, are generally only available during business hours while many members work shifts, and many families are put on 12-18 month wait lists for care every time they move (assignments are generally 12-40 months long). Military parents I know are PISSED.

I wouldn’t say 1 of 16 board members donating to trump is the same as the parent company donating to trump. I’m not sure where I draw the line. Maybe more of the board donates to trump or maybe some of them donate to dems. I don’t even know how to research that.

I had no idea au pairs were common for military families. That really sucks.
My aunt is a single mom who relies on an au pair, and she is really worried. She was hoping to not need help anymore since her kids are older, but her son had a life-altering stroke and now they need the help more than ever. Like she didn’t have enough to worry about before this.

Thank you! So scout8, it appears William Lauder, the executive chairman of the board donates to a bunch of Democratic Senate and Congressional campaigns, two other board members donate a bunch to ActBlue and several democratic candidate campaigns, and another board member donated to a democratic candidate.
I’m just saying, I think it’s dangerous to trust these things blindly unless it’s a privately owned company and the owners are donating or a CEO is donating. It’s like that thing that came out saying Wendy’s was donating to trump or whatever when it was really just an owner of a few Wendy’s franchises.

Thanks for doing the research! That's good to know and makes me feel better.

When I moved to the US I came on a J1 visa and later got an H1B visa. I worked at a graduate school. If they could have found qualified researchers in the US, they would have. In fact, for H1B they have to show that they have tried to recruit in the US first, but can't find a suitable candidate.
We are currently trying to move a colleague in our company from Europe to the US, using an L1 visa. This type is also included in the EO for some reason. I am not sure if he is ok, since we already started the application in January or if he also needs to wait until next year.

I have signed up to text for Biden. There is an online training session (a TON of dates and times) to be able to do it. If anyone else wants to sign up to text, I have the link they sent me in my email. I will PM it though because there could possibly be identifying info.
Interesting article about how people who have long been campaigning for a black woman as a VP running mate are interested in the optics of representation, people campaigning for Warren as a running mate just really like her policies, and people who have more recently become more vocal about a BIPOC running mate (Amy Klobuchar) are basically just advocating for "not Warren."

This was a good read. It expressed a lot of thoughts that I had regarding his VP choice. I initially wanted Harris or Warren to be the president. Harris because she has such a powerful voice and I think she would be formidable against Trump. Her policies are good and her qualifications are well rounded so I think she can address a myriad of issues that will need to be addressed post Trump. On the other hand I love Warren too for similar but different reasons. She is also very deft at breaking down issues and I prefer her more liberal policy views. I couldn’t understand why people still lived in Bernie’s camp with her on the ticket. I felt like she had actual plans to address her policies and not just soundbites.
Reading the article made me realize though that my interest in Biden’s VP pick is centered around the feeling that I want someone to be excited for. Biden’s fine. He’s doing an adequate job but he still feels really distant as a candidate. Of course Trump has more exposure simply because he’s such a trainwreck so he’s constantly in the spotlight. But nonetheless I don’t really feel like I’m seeing a presence from the dems or Biden’s camp. They really need to step up their game.

I think I would like to do this... I'd have to be careful, though. I don't want to get into arguments with anyone. My internal editor shuts off when I get angry or even just annoyed. I think I'll just try to read more about it right now.
For others here that have done this, what was your experience?

So I texted for Beto and there were no arguments. I did get more than a few rude responses BUT the rule is you just click them off the list for future texts so you don't even respond to the rude responses. Most numbers you text are dem friendly numbers. We usually aren't trying to change peoples minds, just trying to get out the vote and get people to commit to voting and sign up to volunteer. I'll send you my link. Before you can even text you have to do a "training" and it'll tell you more about it.

This is similar to my experience when texting as well. I've also done calls and I much prefer texting.

Usually there’s canned responses on a variety of issues. Mostly so you’re not saying something on behalf of the campaign that the candidate doesn’t stand for. Also so that you’re not out in the weeks on policy (sometimes you get someone with a very specific pet policy).
Most of your role isn’t to persuade, it’s to encourage and inform. The people you’re most likely to get out to the polls in support of Biden are already planning on it, they just need a reminder nudge. Then there’s marginal voters who support Biden, but moved and need to re-register or find their new polling place (or sign up for vote by mail). Those are your best bets. There might be a few that want more information because they want to feel they investigated all the candidates before making their choice (although how that’s possible this year, I don’t know). Then you’ll get people who just want to argue or upset you. These people are not going to be persuaded and you don’t need to waste time on them.
ETA: very rarely on a local or policy issue, I’ve found persuasion to be helpful. For instance, I was canvassing for a school board on behalf of Planned Parenthood (the now former school board had blocked birth control access in the high school). A woman answered the door and said, “I’m liberal in every way except on ONE issue.” So I said, “how do you feel about birth control?” She said, “that prevents that issue.” I got her vote, and by then end of it, we’d flipped the school board and got the high schoolers got access to birth control. It’s pretty rare, but it feels good.

I feel like this is right in line with this administration's playbook. They do what they want based on their worldview without any analysis or consideration of the real-world impacts, they don't seem to believe unintended consequences are even a thing and that if they *want* a policy to have certain impacts and not others, then it will just magically do that. This is what happens when you migrate from ultra-conservative theory into real-world policy without any actual experience. (Sort of like, relying on "personal responsibility" as an effective response to a pandemic while simultaneously deriding mask-wearing and social distancing.)
I guarantee that as they were looking for more ways to limit legal immigrants/workers, somebody said, "Who uses au pairs anyway? Rich libruls! Let's stick it to them some more AND keep more immigrants out!" And didn't dig any deeper than their own assumptions about the impacts of something like this.

Perhaps even more in line with this administration’s playbook, the military members most impacted by this decision are women — either single moms or dual mil (the majority of married women in the military are married to another military member). So ether they didn’t have any military women at the table when the decision was made (lol, assuming there even was a table), or they actively don’t care about female servicemembers and want to make it harder for us to continue serving so we can all go be good little wives like Mother Pence. Either way, disgusting.

The proclamation states that it doesn’t apply to someone currently in the US. The immigration firms I work with have indicated anyone outside the US trying to enter using one of the restricted visa classes (H1B, H2B, J, or L) needs to immediately consult with their immigration lawyer to see if an exception exists.
In the situation of your colleague if he is outside the US I don’t think you’ll be able to get him in with the L visa before the end of the year (unless he meets one of the qualified exceptions).
Also, if the president remains in office he will continue extending this proclamation.

I know. I am a citizen now, so this doesn't apply to me. As for my colleague, we will see what happens.

I haven’t seen yard signs for Trump yet but I saw plenty of Trump flags when we went to the beach. I did see 2 Biden flags. But people keep talking like Texas can go blue and where I’m sitting that’s not going to happen unless they start energizing. I feel like they are taking for granted that Democrats who hate trump will vote for him (which is true) and not work for the support. But if they try to excite and motivate people they could pull people who are more reluctant to their side. I didn’t like Bernie but he excited people. We need something to be excited about right now. They only have 4 months!

I'm hoping for a VP announcement that will get people fired up. Sooner than later, please.

Yeah, this sucks for a lot of people I know. And it was such short notice a lot of new au pairs were supposed to be coming over soon for the fall.
