On a tangent, I’m glad Newsom is cracking down on Orange County’s shenanigans. I think he’s been fairly reasonable about working with rural counties (most of which are deep red) when they wanted to move more quickly than the rest of the state in reopening. But Orange County is just ridiculous. Their numbers may look better than some of the hardest hit counties, but they’re still much more affected than any county that’s gotten a waiver.
Most of us Orange County residents are also glad that he's doing this too. It's really crazy. See my above post about one of the people who makes the decisions for the county....Michelle Steel and her dog mask comments are absolutely ridiculous.

goldengirlz, isn’t the recent increase in CA from SoCal? I don’t think I’ve seen huge spikes in the Bay Area. And I think the spike in WA is from outside the Seattle area too, if I’m not mistaken.
We’ve done a good job and I’m happy for us too, but I’m nervous about a spike. What gives me hope is that we began reopening when our numbers were way down and we have really robust testing and tracing. I know there will be spikes, I just feel good about our chances of containing them now.

If you are looking at straight number of cases, we are the highest here in LA County. But, we also have a little over 10 million people here. Our numbers aren’t great, but they are seeing spikes in the metro areas throughout the state.

Sort of. Seattle's numbers have gone up again, but rural Yakima County is a big part of our spike. They have 2/3 as many cases as King County (where Seattle is) yet they only have 1/10 of the population.

I don’t mean to knock the work that NY has done on testing. At all. And part of this is just my frustration of feeling like we’re doing everything “right” and still stuck in the thick of it.
Bay Area numbers have looked okay and you’re right that most of the increase has occurred in LA County and the Central Valley (plus Imperial County, which has been treating Americans coming back from Mexico.) But that’s why it’s so hard to pin it down to state actions. Especially in large states.
I'm so happy to hear this and hope that it will be strictly enforced, however they enforce these kinds of things. I basically don't want to leave NJ or have anyone come here from out of state until a vaccine is widely available. I think it also will send a good message to other states that aren't following the phase guidelines or requiring masks.
ETA - I feel like I don't see NY and NJ being reported on nationally and didn't those two states do a really good job getting the curve down? Why are they not being used as an example for other states.
As a Californian, I would caution against patting yourselves on the back at this stage of the game. We were the first state to enact shelter in place and for a while we were feeling really good about ourselves! We had among the lowest number of cases per capita! I still think we’re doing a pretty good job (we practically wrote the playbook!) but for various reasons, we’re not on the other side of this yet.
Also, while things have indeed looked MUCH better in NY and NJ these past few weeks — and I’m happy for you! — the total (cumulative) case and death count per capita still far exceeds what’s happening today in TX, FL and CA. So things are getting bad but not nearly as bad as NY and NJ at their peak.
(I’m not saying we won’t get there but the “lesson” is more of a cautionary tale.)
I know everyone likes to rag on Florida and Texas because their governors suck, but the truth is what’s happening at the state level has been a mixed bag and hasn’t corresponded with how many things states are doing “right.” Some red states have avoided the worst of the outbreak. Some blue states are struggling. (And NY in particular has seen numerous examples of infighting between De Blasio and Cuomo. Such great role models. 🙄) The U.S. is still very much in the first wave. We’ll congratulate NY and NJ if you guys manage to avoid a second wave. But right now? It’s too early. It would be so easy to backslide.
I agree. I’m in NJ and while our numbers are low, we’re not like more disciplined than people in other states. We’re not being extra careful or anything. People with no masks, everyone being out etc. With NY/NJ being so low it’s just going to take a little longer to start seeing a spike up. I think though Cuomo and Murphy will shut down or change course though since they’ll watch the numbers. That’s the difference with some of the red state governors. I don’t think they’ll do it.
Have we discussed rt.live? Am obsessed with that site. Gives me all the info on each state in 1 page.

Yeah, I knew I couldn’t look at raw numbers for one county that’s more populous than most states. CA itself is so large that an uptick doesn’t mean there’s an uptick everywhere. And from what I’ve been reading, there aren’t concerns right now about overburdened hospitals (except maybe in few select areas)?

The hardest hit county — Imperial County — is right on the border with Mexico and I believe they’ve seen an influx of Americans with the virus coming back for treatment. That’s also the only place I’ve read (so far) where hospitals are truly overloaded.
Kudos to the small number of green states. But this could just be the trajectory of the virus: come through fast and furious and then move on to the next hot spot. Too many unknowns. 🤷♀️
Omg. Dave Ramsey hosted a COVID-19: What Now? live stream on finances tonight. But it wasn’t just him talking in a studio. They hosted a live audience with no distancing and no masks. He also has 1,000+ employees back to work all at once in a fully open concept office (the live stream showed the office at the beginning. Literally nothing would have been lost by him just doing this on stage with no audience. WHY.
I’m up in the very northern part of California and our cases have been increasing quickly over the last week or so. It’s not big numbers but we are increasing faster than we were. The county I live in had a rodeo about a month ago and most people around here don’t wear masks or listen to social distancing guidelines.

1) Many of Dave’s Super Fans (and employees) are bootstrap-tugging Republicans who likely believe this is all nonsense. 2) DR fans sometimes are cult-ish (I realize there are perfectly normal people who use his system to get out of debt, but his continued fans are often HUGE fans who believe anything he says...and surely Dave wouldn’t host something that puts his fans at risk!) 3) He was probably selling products to them while he was there. They wouldn’t have ordered online because they don’t use credit cards. 4) Money over People.

That site is amazing! I’ve been checking a few others but this one has everything I want to see.
Basically, we are going to see outbreaks anywhere (a prominent scientist likened this to a forest fire - where this finds an opportunity to spread unabated, it will). Know what would have helped? A national response.
Omg. I had the Price is Right on as background noise while painting and they broke in with a press conference. Pence is talking about all the gains and the jobs numbers. DUDE. Read the room.

I'm obsessed as well. I look at it religiously but it feels like the data changes a lot. Like the look into the past seems to change more than it should. I can't explain it succinctly - for example, if this week I look at one week in the past, 20 states are above 1.0 Rt, when I look next week it will say that two weeks ago, 30 states are above 1.0 when I would have assumed it should be 20. So clearly, I don't totally understand what I'm looking at.
California people- has filming resumed on any sets there? I saw at least one soap opera had started filming again.
They can start filming as of last Friday, I believe. But there are a lot safety requirement and studios are trying to figure out how to implement those. I have several friends who work in the industry and many of them have not yet returned to work.

Someone just told me on FB that wearing a mask means that I will compromise my own health and immunity. Ugh. He used to be a reasonable person 10 years ago.
I understand that in times of crisis leaders should offer some hope and reassurance but Pence has taken that to the point where he’s practically dismissive. Tell people to stay home as much as they can and wear masks!
This part has me seeing red:
“Pence would not recommend that all Americans wear masks even when pressed, instead urging people to listen to their local health officials and pray.”
Pray for us, guys. Pray for the entire country. That’s all we’ve got left.
Staff are beginning to report back to work on Monday. Cuomo announced the mandatory quarantine for people coming from hard-hit states. Suddenly I am learning just how many staff are about to return home from Florida and the Carolinas and now can’t come back to work. I continue to be baffled by people doing long-distance leisure travel. One staff informed me that she’s going to S.C. in mid-July and still planning to go. Wtf.
We’re going to Tahoe mid July. We have a reservation for a house with friends (originally to see Phish whomp whomp) and decided to keep it. Not sure there will be much to do besides hiking, kayaking, and grilling out, which is perfect.
I'm going in a few weeks too, can't wait! Just an FYI, Nevada is requiring masks now.

London Breed just pushed back the 3rd phase of opening which was supposed to start next week.
There's a podcast I listen to sometimes with a homesteader from rural Washington state who was talking about a month and a half ago about how her church decided they were done following the rules and had started meeting for "secret church" on someone's land (probably hers, honestly) and how they were hugging and gathered in groups to sing, so I'm not too surprised to hear about that outbreak.
@@@@@
Some parents in a town in IL decided to hold a "prom" for their kids and their friends. They had 40 some people in their house for this party and so far half of them have tested positive for Covid. Local news keeps trying to reach the people who held it but they refuse to answer any questions about why they thought this was a good idea.

I doubt they want to admit to the news that they are really just selfish assholes.

I hope that nobody became seriously ill...but I have to think that one could be charged with some form of manslaughter or negligent homicide or something by flagrantly disregarding public health orders related to a deadly pandemic if it leads to someone’s death.

Where in WA? I’m in Yakima County and I admit we are hunkering and hiding. Our numbers are incredibly concerning...as is the mindset of a lot of people here. 😩🤦🏼♀️

I'm so sorry. I need to check in with my family out there. I have an aunt and another relative that are BC survivors, as well as cousins and other assorted relatives. The numbers there are staggering.
We just got a notice in our community FB page that they're searching for party-goers from a town or two over who attended a party that had somewhere between 40-70 people and not all have been traceable. So, a "please report ASAP was sent out via social media. My daughter, in her CSR job, was talking to a gentleman in that same town whose wife died from COVID and he doesn't have masks so I'm sending him some that my friend made plus shipping some surgical masks. She said he sounded so lonely that she talked and got his info, which she sent me. I'm hoping we can pen-pal or something, give him someone to talk with if he has nobody else right now.

Our (IL) numbers have gone down for the past 5 weeks. I guess it makes people feel like it's not a problem anymore, so the assholes who think it's a joke get emboldened.
