My kids go back to school on July 30th (I'm in Indiana). Masks are optional, but encouraged for students, teachers will be required to wear them. The district will consider e-learning for students that request it on a case by case basis and there needs to be "documentation." No water fountains are to be used, each classroom will have assigned restrooms and kids aren't to go to other restrooms, if a child has a fever they must stay out of school for 72 hours, can still eat in the cafeteria (socially distanced) and will have mostly pre-packaged meals. Playgrounds will be broken into zones for less interaction between classes. Field trips are cancelled. No visitors allowed in the buildings. Eliminate shared supplies. Library books placed in isolation for 72 hours before returning to circulation. Students who have a positive test or who need to quarantine will have e-learning.
Not too thrilled with this, but there isn't any option but to send our kids back.
In June, we decided that we would push up the start date by 2 weeks (kids come back 8/31 instead of after Labor Day like usual). The thinking was that (at the time) this would be the safest time and we could get a couple of weeks in before we went remote again. I'm wondering if we're going to move it back to September instead.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
"The interactive map and resource guides compare and analyze reopening plans for schools nationwide, offering solutions for safe education during the pandemic."
I don't know how I feel about this. Just because the state addresses something in their plan (to date) doesn't mean they are making the best decisions.
Coming from a CT resident whose plan (which is still in development) requires masks but appears to rate very low on their system.
If you work in a school and have school-age kids can I ask your plans? This is giving me tremendous anxiety. If I have to be there full time and my kids are only going hybrid, I don’t know what I’m going to do.
My district sent an email saying they're working on 3 plans, I'm guessing 100% distant, 100% in-person, and hybrid, but won't fully release until MN governor announces plans on 7/27.
My hospital is now testing basically every patient when they come in. Everyone is considered PUI until proven otherwise. We currently have adequate* PPE but I expect that to change as about 10 days ago they put out a directive saying we could care for COVID + patients with just a surgical mask and face shield. I work with idiots who act as if their lives haven't/shouldn't change, and have come to work +. My H and I work opposite days so we haven't had childcare issues or disruptions.
That said, I will be homeschooling this fall. I don't want to be responsible for inadvertently exposing someone to covid.
enrollment just got pushed back another week to the 20th. Was originally supposed to be the 9th, then the 13th. State has given recommendations to districts but not made them public. Sounds like it is all hush hush until the state board of ed finalizes everything at their meeting next week, then districts will announce. We were told today that we can choose in school or online and have to stick with our choice for a semester.

I chose hybrid for my kid (rising 4th grade)--2 days in school per week, as well as for myself--4 days per week with kids. E will go to school 2 days, then 2 of the 3 days he'll be at home and H will direct the asynch work (he WFH and won't be able to do any site-based work those 2 days, but he will be able to do that on the 2 days E is in school). The other day of the week (Mondays) is our planning/intervention day. I am a specialist, so I am hoping either a) I can WFH on the planning days (I'm the librarian) or b) I can bring E with me. Otherwise, I will have to take leave, so that H can work outside the home on that day. H will drive E to school and I will pick him up, so we will not be utilizing transportation services.
I am not at all comfortable with the plan for E OR for me, but if I chose DL for E, then I would have to resign and I can't (H makes 3X what I make, he wouldn't be the one leaving his job). The possibility of being granted a DL contract for me is very very slim, so I didn't even really entertain the idea.
I realize the fact that I can even cobble a schedule together w/o having to somehow find childcare is a privileged position to be in.
NYC goes back 9/10. Teachers are due in 9/8 (day after Labor Day).
Where was that announced? My council member had a live meeting with some DOE people last night and they seemed to say they didn’t know what the start date would be.
Our school will likely need to be 3 cohorts so 2 days for 2 weeks and 1 day for 1 week. I’m worried how therapy is going to work. My older daughter has 2x speech, 2x OT, and 1x counseling on her IEP. Obviously she can’t be pulled from class if she’s only there 1-2 days. Speech worked well over zoom but OT and counseling did not. I’m concerned how they’ll handle it.

I've been waiting too and hadn't seen anything official. No one seems to know if the normal start date is in effect. I wonder if they want to start on Monday 9/14 to give the teachers more PD time. I am worried that all of September will be really hard. The schedules I've seen proposed are super complicated.

Oh oops, might not be public info...(came from DH).

I'm assuming it is tentative then.
I feel like there is a reason they are sitting on the calendar. As far as I know the 180 day rule isn't waved and so given the contract there really is only so many ways to put it together. Maybe they are going to use extra days off as a negotiating tool?

I have no idea. I guess I’ll try to cobble something together with her dad and my parents if I need to. I can’t really figure it out until I know what’s going on.

My h is planning on working from home. We haven’t heard what the kids’ district will do, but probably a hybrid. I don’t support that, as a teacher, because it’s horrible to try to manage both, but I don’t know what supports they would have in place for them. So my kids would probably go half time, required to wear masks.
I’m glad DH’s work is allowing him to choose to work from home, because I don’t want to send DS to daycare, and they’re not doing before and after care tho year

The official NYC DOE calendar isn’t out, and I’m guessing they’re making changes as we speak.
I’ve heard some rumors that they may push into later in the summer to account for all 180. I doubt UFT will let them cut into mid-winter or spring break. (This comes from some UFT folx I know, so I’m sure what they know is also limited)

I said this somewhere else, but I don't know if it's in this thread.
I figured out my priorities and realized that my kids' academics are near the bottom of the list. So that relieved some of my stress.
I plan for DH and I to plead to our bosses to be allowed to still WFH some days. If that isn't allowed for one of us, then in theory out of every 3 weeks, one week the kids will be at school; one week one parent will be home with them; one week maybe they'll come to work with the other parent and sit in our office playing ipad all day. Or I'll quit my job and try to re-enter the workforce later. Or once my youngest turns 8, they'll stay home alone together and play ipad all day. If they can't keep up academically, we'll deal with that as best we can and if they get behind, oh well. I literally cannot do it all. My #1 goal is keeping us all alive; 2nd goal is mental health of one of the kids; 3rd goal is finances; 4th goal is mental health for the rest of us; 5th goal is academics.

While the UFT is fairly strongly positioned it was seemed unable to prevent some of the weird stuff last school year like being open on Good Friday.
The February break could be shortened. Our private just does 2 days. There is a lot of school closures in NYC. They could cut out a lot of stuff if they had to and some days end up being a non-issue this year as the holiday in question falls on a weekend.
I am really curious why they are sitting on this. Even if schools open virtually they still "open".
My daughter goes back to school August 11th but we haven't heard anything at all. I hope we hear something soon-I think at least knowing and planning will alleviate some anxiety for me.
We have two options--in person 5 days a week with social distancing measures and masks or on-line learning. No real details about what either option looks like. Enrollment is July 14-24. I have two weeks to decide and I have never been more stressed in my life.
DD wants to go back badly. She hated on-line learning but it sounds like it will be super inconsistent with lots of closures and I don't know how we are supposed to manage any of this and why this is all being placed on districts backs with zero support from anyone. At the same time, Abbott is threatening to close the state. So that tells you we aren't ready for in person school. Why are we even trying?! Everyone is terrified. 2020 sucks and I hate it.
