Hope you find it fun!
Team Green
Boy name...so far but we both like William and Eric. Last name is common W name with one syllable. Middle name will be John Michael or Michael John. Based on that, I feel like the first name should be more interesting but we gravitate towards traditional
Girl...we both like Layla and Lydia. Carolyn is also a suggestion (is this how you spell it so the last syllable is soft I). My mom died, her name was Linda...I like to softly work that in. More flexible with middle names here because we already worked tradition into first born who is named Elizabeth Mary Lynette.
So other suggestions or feedback on what we are already considering. Feel free to be direct, I can handle it

William was always our boy name, but alas, two girls and we're done having kids. But I really do like Eric too. Also a more classic name but not super common either. Other boy names along the same lines that I like - Christopher, Keith, Timothy, Paul.
Other girl names that at least somewhat connect to Linda - Evelyn, Lindsey, Caroline.

We ended up with a Madelyn, but I pushed for Carolyn at one point. (That is how I spell it for the soft-i pronunciation). I also like Layla so I'm no help.
And another vote for both William and Eric here, although I lean more towards William. It was on our list, along with Lucas, but no boys here.
Did your mom have a middle name? Maybe you could play with that.
My mom died too and I wanted her “represented“ somehow with my kids, but, as delightful as she was as a person, I have never liked my mom’s first name as a word. So we decided to make a slight variation of my mom’s middle name the middle name for our younger daughter. I think it’s perfect.

I love Layla and Lydia. Lydia made our girls list (we have a niece Layla so we didn’t consider that do us but I love it.). To me, Lydia is more classic and Layla is more trendy. (I know it’s an old name, but I think it’s much more common in American culture more recently,).
I love William and I’m imagining your last name as a cardinal direction and I think it sounds good together. Eric sounds good too. I do think Eric will be less common if that’s important to you.
Boys names we used or were on our list: DH’s requirement was names that couldn’t be shortened because he has a long name that gets shortened every which way
I really like William and Carolyn. Does your DD always go by her full name or use the nickname? I like your other girl name choices, too, but if people call her Liz or Lizzie, I think it’s a bit too close sounding.

I've always loved the nickname Will for William, as opposed to Bill or Billy. Butu that might not sound so great with a one-syllable W surname. Will Woods. Will West. Will Wong. Hmmm.
gastro , ha! We were the opposite, H has a long name that he hates but is so glad that there was a shortened nickname option. I have a name that's short and has no shortened nicknames. We ended up with three kiddos who all have long legal names and we call them one of their possible nicknames. :-)
William is our youngest. My mom tried pushing Billy or Willy as a nickname (no go!). We call him Liam at home.
We have a Leo (just Leo - not short for anything). Other names I liked were Oliver, Sebastian, August.
I also like Layla. We have a friend Leila and I've always thought it was pretty. Lydia I think could be a nice tribute to your mom. Don't think you can go wrong with either one of those. I also like the suggestions of Evelyn and Rosalind.
Our DD is Emilia. Other girl names I liked were Luna, Lily, Harper, Mila, Everly, Lucy, Mia, Stella.
I like Eric a lot and I would have used it if it didn’t rhyme with my last name. Our last name also starts with a W, and I liked William, but DH didn’t like the alliteration. I also prefer the nickname Will to Bill or Billy).
I’m not a Layla fan mainly because it’s a friend’s dog’s name 🤷♀️ What about Lila?
I also really like Carolyn but I’m not a fan of the nickname Carrie. If we had another girl she was going to be Katherine Lily, nickname Kate.

I love Layla the most of the ones you mentioned.
Well, actually, I love Linda the most. A good friend of mine named her daughter Linda after her mother who had died and it is one of those names that everyone knows how to spell and seems familiar, but is also very unusual for a younger person to have. So that was kind of nice. I don't know if you have totally ruled out Linda.
Also--Melinda is nice.
I like William a lot and it was on our short list, but I really did not want Bill or Billy and I felt like I was inviting years of me getting frustrated at people using that nickname, or accepting he was called that when I really didn't like it. So we named him Griffin instead.
Other names on our very short list were Caleb and Gideon.
Eric is my boyfriend's name so that was out although we did consider Rick for a minute but I do think Eric is a good name in that it isn't one the child would always have to spell or repeat to people (I have an unusual name so I was sensitive to that) but it isn't common either.

I love Eric. William is good, too I just much prefer Eric. Love Layla, and like Lydia. Lindsey would work, too and is not super common these days (I know lots of little girls named Layla and Lydia if you're concerned about it being "too popular").

funny you mention this ...because I love the nickname Ricky but not "richard". I actually really like Ricky Nelson (I know, not my generation at all) and took my dad recently to see Nelson (two of his sons) playing their dad's music...and I said at that show "that's it, the baby's name is Ricky". Turns out...Ricky Nelson's real name is Eric!
