I think it’s more common in some places than others to see lots of houses with American flags. But either way, I would not think twice about a house with a flag in any state. (Republicans don’t own the flag — or patriotism for that matter. But, sadly, I do agree with the perception that people who dress in head-to-toe Stars and Stripes and plaster flags all over their cars tend to be Trumpers.)
Where I live, you’re just as likely to see the state flag or a Pride flag. So you do have options!
We have a flag (wood, not on a pole) on our front porch right now.
I'm firmly of the opinion that I'm not going to concede all ownership of patriotic displays to the right-wing nut jobs. And I think it's important for people to see that we are lefties and patriotic.
I have had a flag flying from my front porch for the almost 20 years I have lived in my house. Never occurred to me that someone would take it as a political affiliation.

We don’t have a flag at this house, but we did at our old one and I agree.

I also don’t affiliate the flag with a political group, although I believe republicans would like people to think that it represents them. My immigrant family members fly theirs proud, as did we until our light burned out. Just need to replace it.
I usually have something else up in my yard - pride, BLM, or a campaign sign during election season.

If I see a full on flagpole at a residence (not business, I think conservative, probably older, likely a veteran. The ones I’ve known to do this are full on ‘Murica red hat wearing people. One put his up after several families who were born in other countries moved in around him.
If I see a little angled flagpole next to the garage that has a US flag but also some days a favorite team, I think average citizen, likely to be engaged in politics to some extent. But not likely to throw out the “my rights” and “I’m a vet” arguments when the neighborhood pool isn’t opening yet bc of a pandemic (true story).
All of this is based purely on who I’ve known to have each on/at their home.
I've lived in a historically red, but now purple, state my whole life. It's really only in the last 20 years that I see people fly the flag all year round, and I do assume they are republicans. (probably because my IL's do this and they are very 'Merica, Fuck yeah!). I do not assume that of people who only put out the flag on holidays.
Arizona also has an American flag license plate. I also assume anyone who has one is a republican.

Is definitely feel like there are more houses displaying flags than 20 years ago, but it’s possible I’m just noticing it more.
If it’s attached to the house by the door I think nothing of us. If it’s a full separate pole that cost a ton of money to have put in I do assume it’s a conservative.
I want one but am too lazy to take it down every night and put it up every day but judge mental as hell at those who ignore flag code, so I don’t have one.
Anecdotally, the only houses on my street flying an American flag are also flying a Trump flag, so it's difficult for me not to assume "Murica!" We have never flown a flag. I don't feel the need to and to be honest, I'm not super proud right now anyway.

We are in the middle of Trumpet land. H and I have debated on taking our flag off the porch. We recently replaced ours and I wanted to go non traditional with NASA or a political “Anyone but Trump” flag. H said we would be egged. 😞

We don’t feel the need either. It was on the house when we bought it. We took it down for a few weeks when we needed to replace it. We got so use to having the flag it looked bare.
Historically, I have not been a flag person for my house. But I am considering flying one, along with a second one that clearly denotes where I stand, now. Over the past few years, it’s really started to bother me that the right wing seems to think they own patriotism and this country. I am about as far from an America, Fuck Yea person as there is, but it’s important to me to make it known that the GOP doesn’t have a monopoly on the US flag.
If you really don’t want to fly it, though, does your city have a flag? My neighborhood is full of my city’s flag and I think those are really sharp.

We put out a Love Trumps Hate sign, and then a dog started pooping in our yard. I will be forever convinced the two events are related.
Since 2016 my gut reaction to seeing a flag on someone's house is definitely to assume they're a crazy Trumper. I hate that it's become such a negative symbol to me but I can't seem to help it.

No I don’t automatically think that. We have a flag and a hate has no home here sign (which we have had up longer) so hopefully if anyone thinks of us like that due to the flag then the sign will balance it out. I couldn’t care less if we have one or not, but my h wanted it up so I don’t care one way or another.
No I don’t think that and it’s sad that people have this association. Our flag should represent our total history and not just the last 4 ugly years.
Around here if someone is a Trumper, they’ll put out a sign so you have no doubts.
A lot of American history is ugly, not just the last four years. While I don’t think the GOP should be allowed to co-opt all the many things our flag represents, I don’t blame anyone for having complicated feelings about the American flag either.
Being able to immigrate to the United States was literally a lifesaver for my family. But this country hasn’t always been so generous, both to people who were born here and those who have wanted to come here willingly.
We have a flag up and we are very much not Trumpers. H feels very passionate that the right shouldn't get to claim the flag as their own. We also have a hate has no home here type sign.
We did just see this big truck/motorcycle brigade drive by and I felt ready nervous as they were flying a TON of american flags. I was for sure it was some alt-right thing. But judging by the writing on the vehicles it was some sort of drive by celebration for a family with a child in the NICU. phew
We are liberals and fly an American flag. We used to fly a university flag, but it got stolen by our idiot neighbors, so that is why we fly the American flag now. I figure they won’t steal that, and they haven’t.
We wouldn’t fly any flag but the home came with a small flagpole, and DH felt inclined to use it.

I fully agree with this. To me, the flag represents all of that, yes, but it also represents the hope of what we can become.
I honestly don’t assume anything. My H is in the military, and we usually have one out. We are not Trumpers or even conservatives. I don’t think anyone is more or less patriotic for flying one. I know great patriotic people who don’t, and shitbags who do.
I guess it depends? For the last few years we’ve felt some kind of way with the over the top displays of patriotism. It’s become more of an “aggressive” thing versus patriotism. Last year we put a couple small flags in the front yard, purely for security reasons. We were in a place with lots of tread on me flags, trump signs etc. We decided to put the flags out so people wouldn’t give us as many weird looks. It’s a shame and so unfortunate. It bothered H so much that now he’s leaning towards more of a “take back the flag” attitude.
