I'm so glad to be here and know there are like minded people out there.
On the flip side, I have a friend that is absolutely convinced that if she leaves her house, she'll get covid, and she'll die. And that if any of her friends/family leave their houses, they'll get covid, and they'll die. Like, she's preparing herself to mourn every friend she has, just because they occasionally go to Target or the grocery store.
On the one hand, I'm glad she's taking things seriously, but on the other, I think he's gone to the bad place. She posts at least 40 covid-related articles on Facebook every single day.

I had to hide a friend like that.
Yeah, I have her muted, but I go to her page sometimes for puppy pictures. 😉

My ex is like this and it only matters to me because we have a teenaged son and he’s trying to tell me what to do. I have primary custody so DS is with me 80% of the time. He pretty much only leaves the house to ride his bike around the neighborhood solo and stop at a friend’s house to chat outside 20 ish feet apart (D’s in the driveway on his bike and friend on the porch) or to play golf. We only golf at the county course because there is only one entrance and there is a security person making sure everyone is properly wearing a mask before they go in. There are other security people wandering around making sure people stay 6 feet apart and keep their mask on. Since cases are going up in our area, ex told DS he’s going to talk to me about golf because it’s too scary for him (for ex, not DS who wants to keep going as it’s his only real outlet since I won’t let him go to the crowded beach). Ex doesn’t have a TV and doesn’t listen to news radio so his only source of news is Facebook. Cases are going up here, yes. But not because of golf. They are going up because of larger family/friend gatherings like grad parties, dine-in restaurants, bars. I honestly think his mental health is in bad shape right now. But as his ex, it’s not my place to point that out. I’ve tried in the past and it’s only made things worse.
I agree with you. I live walking distance to an LA beach that is known for huge crowds on the 4th. I’ve been super nervous about this weekend. I was relieved when they announced the closures. But, people have been taking about just going to the OC or Ventura. I think all the beaches should close for the weekend, because closing just one county simply pushes more people into the neighboring county beach.
Yes, they basically just insured that San Diegans who are concerned about COVID-19 should stay inside their homes all weekend because we are about to be flooded with tourists from hot spots while in the midst of our own uptick in cases. 🙄
Im worried for my parents in San Diego County. Between the uptick in Mexico and LA area and the annual migration of Arizonans to San Diego for summer vacation (aka Zonies as the locals call them), there will be a lot more germs floating around. I hope the county shuts down inside dining and blocks parking at county beaches. Let’s discourage vacationers right now.

I just watched the first part of the county update. No bans other than closing bars. We have been “flagged” by the state for an uptick in cases so if numbers don’t start trending down I would bet they do close parking lots at the very least to avoid getting put on the “watch list” the state has.

I hope we're not these people - we probably are to some of our friends and family. I don't post about it at all, so I know I'm not, like, literally, lol. Also, I don't think WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE OMG. But we don't leave our property (we live on 2.5 acres and have a pool in our backyard - FL). We don't need to, though. We have grocery delivery (and I know it's a privilege and I tip very, very well - I also used them exclusively pre-COVID), we've always been introverts anyway, and we've gone out a couple of times to do banking and to go to another property we own for a change of scenery. People down here are nuts, though. We went to the pediatrician yesterday for well visits for the girls, and while the office itself was great, with the cases surging, I'm just like, yeah, if I can, I'm good at home. Meanwhile, our few friends are heading to the gym, the shops, the beach, restaurants... maybe we ARE the crazy ones.

You sound different than my friend in fairly substantial ways - this is something that I wouldn't give a second thought to, even if it's more isolating than we've been (plus our situation is vastly different than Florida rn). She's actually a little better than she was in March and April, but she really seems to believe that covid is an automatic death sentence.

That's hard. I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
My boss decided shes taking next week off and going to Florida to see her parents. I can't even. (She decided last week without any kind of discussion with me about how this will affect my ability to do my job.) So yeah, not super excited about the two weeks after she comes back.
Can I ask how Orange County is still not on the watch list? The hell? Also, it appears they are only closing lots at State Beaches. Many of the beaches in Orange County are either city or county run, not State Beaches. So this could simply crowd those beaches even more. I hope I am wrong, but with comments I have been seeing locally, I fear I am not.
nor is Marin county despite cases sky rocketing more than Santa Clara or contra costa - both of which *are* on the list. WTF?

If you only close lots, and don’t do anything to discourage the traffic on the narrow routes over, it’s meaningless. You just get a lot of unsafe parking. People who’ve driven an hour or more aren’t dissuaded by a closed lot.

This 100% - DH works for an OC beach city that blocked their parking lots and it bled over into residential areas/unsafe areas which caused a huge amount of headaches for residents and local businesses that were open/open for takeout.

Marin’s rise is mostly due to the situation at San Quentin. But if the prison guards live in the area...
I wish my county would close beaches for the weekend. Between LA closing theirs and the spike of cases in Arizona (and the increased safety requirements) I would be surprised if San Diego’s community spread DOESN’T increase in the next few weeks.

Have beaches been problematic there in terms of viral spread? Beaches are open/opening in my general area. It really seems that indoor is the most problematic. If beaches being open keep people from gathering in larger crowds indoors at homes that seems like the ideal situation.

I don’t know that just sitting on a beach has been a problem yet. But the set up at our beach is water, then sand, then bike path, then bars. So there’s a lot of setting up on the sand, going into a bar for a few hours, going back to the sand, rinse repeat. And on the 4th, Labor Day, Memorial Day the bike path is literally shoulder to shoulder people. Lots of drinking. People barfing on the side of the bike path. The local police set up mobile drunk tanks for the weekend. And at night, people pack the Pier for the fireworks show. So just your typical beach day probably wouldn’t be an issue, but this is far from typical summer beach crowds. I loved it in my teens and 20s. Now I avoid it - I’ve had my fun and don’t want to be the old lady trying to be cool and relive my youth. Lol.

I was sooo hoping they would close the San Diego beach parking lots but no signs of that yet and I didnt know about the LA beached until reading all of this. This weekend is going to be more of a mess than the normal shit show that it is already for the 4th, on top of it being a Sat. Not looking forward to any of this.

I still think they might on Friday. They talked about how we are already moving in the direction of the counties that have to go back and place more restrictions. I’m holding out hope!

Ahh ok got it. Yeah I don’t think bars should be open, that’s crazy. Hopefully they come up with a better plan to keep people safe.

I’m generally in favor of keeping the beaches open but I think the concern (for Newsom) is that they’ve been used as gathering places and people are packed too closely together to properly social distance. Do you remember the pictures of the insanely packed beaches over Memorial Day weekend? Even outdoors, people were way too close for way too long (sans masks). So some beaches started shutting down and others stayed open but prohibited you from sitting or sunbathing. There’s been the same concern about parks, so in SF, the city actually painted circles to keep groups apart.
I totally agree that the risk appears to be much lower than any indoor activity and that the restrictions could end up moving people into each other’s homes. However, we’re being highly discouraged from seeing people outside our household, period, this weekend so technically that shouldn’t be happening either. We all know people will do it anyway though. Which is why we’re in this mess.

Yeah I guess that’s why I was wondering if beaches have been linked to outbreaks of cases to get a better understanding. There have been protests (multiple per day) going on here for a month now. People often packed together outside for hours at a time and percentage of positive tests is going lower & there’s a lot of testing happening here.
Since the virus is here to stay I think we do have to be reasonable as well. Determine where benefits outweigh risks. No non-essential indoor stuff while keeping the outdoors open when cases are getting above threshold and hospitals are getting crowded. That’s why I was thinking if people are going to gather it’s better to give them a safer place to do so like parks, beaches, trails, outdoor dining, etc.
In areas here purchasing beach tags are required. That’s one way to help with overcrowding for example. We Definitely have to think of new ideas of how to handle things during the pandemic.

Ah, I see what you were asking — sorry! No, there hasn’t been anything specific linked to a beach here, as far as I know.
But that all makes sense and should be something to consider.
wanderingback, at least here protests have been mostly had high percentages of people wearing masks. People not wearing masks stand out it’s so noticeable. Whereas, people at beaches are not usually wearing masks and drinking. They also tend to crowd around restaurants and bars waiting for seating or takeout. I’ll be honest and say that I think social drinking in public leads to people becoming lax as the day/night goes on.

I am so aggravated by people who do not wear masks at this point. Our numbers keep climbing, but I still barely see masks.
Then there are stupid people like my sister. She has a cough and spent the day with someone who tested positive but is sure that it is "just allergies." She has never had allergies in the past. She works as a server at a restaurant so she is getting tested. The person at the party was another idiot. She went out with friends while waiting for her test results. I can't even begin to understand that thought process.
My dad (80) goes out every day and only does the minimum required. If the store makes him use hand sanitizer he will, and if they ask him to put on a mask he will. He has not stayed home a single day since February.
Work is stupid in a different way. My coworker was told that he could not log in to work if he went to get a COVID test (his roommate tested inconclusive). We have been working from home since April and have not seen anyone in person since then, so there would be no risk of exposure working from home while waiting on a test. It does not work/life balance either, it would be entirely unpaid since he already used the 3 days of sick time we are allowed annually.

Marin’s rise is mostly due to the situation at San Quentin. But if the prison guards live in the area...
san Quentin is skewing the county numbers (1/3 of inmates have positive test results), but that obscures a very real rise in out of prison cases.
From the beginning of this until two weeks ago today, Marin had 795 total identified cases. as of today’s results, it has had 1259 outside of the prison - and the turn around on testing has slowed to a crawl. test results had been taking less than 72 hours. It is now taking a week or more so the two week increase is probably greater.

I returned to work on Monday. I can continue to WFH until September, but some of my staff returned and have to return more consistently since they are customer-facing so I want to show up as often as possible for support. Except for Monday, I've been in for half days and then working from home the rest of the days. We have really strict, appropriate protocols for anyone showing up onsite so since I woke up with a cough this morning, I "flunked" the health survey everyone is required to take each morning before showing up onsite. Getting tested in about 30 minutes juuuuust to rule covid out, because I ate some spicy food last night and I *think* the cough might be from acid reflux. I say might because I really haven't experienced acid reflux or heartburn or anything but it seems like based on how I'm feeling, that would be what it is. My boss also said not to underestimate any sympomatic feelings of anxiety since returning to work, even though I have actually felt really good and happy to be back at work. But I think she's right.
