I had a glass of wine and I engaged like a dumbass. Comment was that for every freedom that gets taken away the next thing we know we have no freedoms and that we've known for years smoking is dangerous and causes cancer but smoking hasn't been banned. My answer was that smoking was banned in public spaces and you can smoke at home and you are also welcome to go maskless at home. Retort back was that smoking bans were voted on and had there been a mask referendum he wasn't aware of. Surely some communities adopted no smoking policies before state laws were enacted. Can anyone help me out here?
Many smoking bans were not referenda by the public. They were made by lawmakers--the same as governors deciding on mask requirements. Besides, this is not a permanent rule; smoking is a permanent ban.
Just pull out the big guns: "If you're so selfish that you'd rather risk other people's lives than wear a mask, clearly I'm not going to convince you with evidence of governors who enacted smoking bans without a vote. Your 'freedom' to cause a public health crisis is not a Constitutional right."
Not all states have smoking bans. The list mentions that some were voted on and some weren't.
A dumbass on my feed posted this same statement. Someone asked "what freedom" and she responded "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". It took all my might not to blast her on this. How fucking ignorant can people be???
My favorite is “Freedom isn’t free — it comes with responsibility on the part of each and every one of us to think of the greater good and not just of ourselves. Wearing masks is simply putting other people’s health and safety above your own comfort and convenience. Some people like military, first responders, teachers, public health workers, and many others are used to putting others first. I can tell you don’t fall into that category.”

They're rising to the occasion to show us just how ignorant they can be. There's another post going in a food truck group. It's insane. A Florida trucker said “Just because it’s required, doesn’t mean they are a good idea.”
Are they also this concerned about voter suppression and police choking Black civilians to death for no reason? If not then they can fuck right off with their “loss of freedoms.”

I like to defer to the saying:
“Your rights end where my nose begins.”
(Alternate version: “Your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins.”)
No one has unlimited freedom. Just like you can’t randomly decide to yell “fire” in a crowded theater, you don’t have a right to spread infectious disease in public. I can’t think of any right that’s absolute because other people have rights too. And when there’s a conflict, the public good usually prevails.

I saw one today about how we should just ban Big Macs if we really care about people’s health.
I don’t even know what special kind of stupid a person has to be to think that’s a good comparison to wearing a mask to prevent spread of a terrible virus.
I was checking the local news where my parents live and found this: Protest takes place by PAC opposing face mask mandate. I’m so pissed that I’m going to have to cancel our trip to see my parents because of these assholes and their brethren. So I to went to website referenced and left these responses:
Why do you not want to be forced to wear a mask?
Freedom isn’t free — it comes with responsibility on the part of each and every one of us to think of the greater good and not just of ourselves. Wearing a mask is no more an infringement on your rights (let alone a tyranny!) than wearing a seatbelt or not smoking on a plane. Wearing masks is simply putting other people’s health and safety above your own comfort and convenience.
Some people- like military, police, firefighters, EMTs, doctors and nurses, teachers, and many others - are used to putting others first. I can tell you don’t fall into that category.
Would you be willing to gather in support of the cause?
Absolutely not! Based on the photos from your protest Monday, most of your supporters fall into the high risk category and I would never put their health in jeopardy. Instead, I’ll pray for the health of them and of those they unwittingly infect with the virus, and that they find the strength to stop their reckless, selfish behavior.

A lot of cities and some counties also have bans (some more restrictive than the state-level bans) that aren't voted on. And many restaurants don't allow smoking, even in areas where it's legal. So yes, there's precedent for all levels of government implementing restrictions to protect public health, and for businesses doing so to protect their employees and customers. But don't bother telling that to a mask-hole. There's no talking sense to those people.

I just want to say that I am very, very pleased that nobody yet has posted any kind of reply that touches the territory of victim blaming and people giving themselves "smoking-related ailments" by smoking.
(My mom was a non-smoker who died of lung cancer, so the whole subject of certain diseases being written off as "smoker's diseases" is a touchy subject for me.)
I am late to the party but the responses inspired me. Unfortunately I am a conflict avoider so I will not be using the below retort.

If you do not want to wear a mask then I want to drink and drive. I am confident that I am perfectly safe driving at a BAC of .1 % as much as you are confident that you are not an asymptomatic carrier of a deadly respitory virus.
Then again, it could backfire for those that disagree with DUI laws.

I know many nurses (because I am one). They regularly post pictures of their o2 sats after 13 hour shifts. I have zero patience for people who cannot handle 20 minutes at the grocery.
That you engaged at all... Lawd I cannot deal with all the stupid anymore. These anti mask people go in the same bin with anti vax and creationists. Worthless to argue because they think facts and data are debatable
I watched our city council meeting when there was the discussion about mandating a mask and one of the council members started reading the Declaration of Independence. His claim was that masks violate people’s right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I was rolling my eyes the whole time.
Twitter thread basically saying that, following the “it releases my freedom to have to wear a mask!” crap, then restaurant workers should be free to not wash their hands or cook chicken to the proper temperature.

Omg exactly! I mean I kind of get the people who think that wearing a mask is dangerous, even though they're wrong. At least they have some thought process about why they don't want to wear a mask.
But the freedom thing, wtf. There are rules we have to follow for everything! We can't walk around naked. I can't handle this freedom nonsense over a damn mask. I'm so glad I don't live anywhere that seems to regularly have people with this mindset.
