I think our town’s schools have higher pay, according to my teacher friends. I just looked up my DD’s teachers’ salaries for last 3 years of teachers since all public info. Kindergarten teacher (who DS had this year too till she went on maternity leave in January) made $96k in 2019, first grade teacher made $120k, 2nd grade teacher made $138k. These were all teachers with masters degrees and the first and second grade teacher each won teacher of the year within past 5 years for the school. Our public elementary teachers are pretty incredible.
ETA - you guys are right that the Transparent California website lists it as ‘pay and benefits,’ so not all salary. But private teachers generally don’t get pensions, right?
I have a masters degree and have been teaching for over ten years... about 60k. I have amazing benefits though so if you had that in I’m probably making 6 figures. Teachers don’t get a bump in salary for winning awards like that.
sdlaura, the school districts will all list out their actual salary schedules vs. whatever is on Transparent CA (since I've never used it.)
It is really disheartening what we pay our teachers in comparison to what we expect from them.
DH and I both come from teacher families and... we will not encourage our kids to go into teaching. (This is not to say we wouldn't support them if that was their decision.)
Ok I found our district’s salary only schedule. The masters degree column ranges from $56k to $112k. Looks like 10 years of experience and a masters degree in our district = $78k.
k3am my mom was also an elementary teacher and my dad was a school district central office employee. My dad was a PhD statistician and I always think about how much more he could have made if he ended up using the same skills in my industry (investments). But he does have a fabulous pension and between my parents’ pensions and social security they are very comfortable now.
ITA that teachers should be paid more, and have better access to resources. Our district does seem to do a pretty good job though on paying teachers somewhat of a living wage relative to other areas.
Benefits put teacher salaries over the top. My pay with benefits (which includes 403b contributions, health insurance and tuition remission for my kids) is well over $100k. I do not take home that money.
