This deserves its own post. This young soldier went missing from her DUTY LOCATION in April after multiple complaints of being sexually harassed by other soldiers in her unit that went largely unaddressed by her leadership. Remains were found yesterday.
The day she went missing, she was called into work, and then sometime after arriving she disappeared, with all of her personal affects still at work (keys, access cards, wallet, etc). It hasn’t been released (or they don’t know) who called her into work that day.
I’m devastated for her family. The whole thing was mishandled. It’s just so awful.
One suspect killed himself this morning. I wish I was hopeful that this would result in changes, but sadly I’m not. I hope the people involved will be held responsible.

I had a feeling that this was going to be the end result but hoped I would be wrong.
As soon as I read that she had reported sexual harassment I suspected that the person(s) she reported had harmed her. It always seems to be the way these stories go.
This poor young woman. The military still has such a toxic culture with its treatment of women.

Were her remains found close or nearby the other (2?) Soldiers recently found?
Her story and the others coming out of Fort Hood are very disturbing.
They are all so young. Any life lost is hard, but, I worked with Soldiers this age closely for years. So many of them went to Hood after basic and they were always full of hope and excitement. This type of ending is so sad.
My BFF did her training at Hood, and I’ve sent many young, female students there. One is actually PCSing there soon—I taught her as a high school junior 5 years ago.
I confess that I scrolled past early Facebook posts about this case because I didn’t want it to be true. She was so young, and I cannot imagine her family’s pain. She is also so like an incredible number of young Latinas who join the military because they see it as a pathway to a great life.
My H just left the Army after 23 years of service. He is shocked but not really surprised. He’s seen how women can be treated by predatory superior officers. I believe that he intervened when he saw it happening to women serving with him because that’s the kind of person he is, but I also believe that so many people who could have stopped Vanessa’s victimization and murder chose to turn a blind eye because it was convenient or because they didn’t care.
