I actually really REALLY enjoyed seeing it on tv vs. in the theatre. Seeing the actors' faces, having the camera focus on certain parts of the performance, and the ability to sing as loud as possible really helped me get into the show even more.
Yeah, seeing it in person is an "experience," but I actually don't think it was better - different, yes, but both were equally as thrilling.
I told my husband that it was great to be able to see the actors actually emote! It added in to the whole experience and I really enjoyed that.
Also this was my first time watching and first time listening all the way through and I’ve just got to say it even though I’m pretty sure it’s flameful: Lin-Manuel Miranda is an absolute genius, the man behind it all, a once in a generation writer and composer, but he is not the strongest actor or singer in this cast and it really, really showed compared to his amazingly talented co-stars. His talents lie elsewhere obviously, and in abundance, but I found it a little distracting at times!
I don’t think this is flameful and I think LMM is actually fully aware of this. I feel like I’ve seen some tweets of his that back it up.
I love the movie, but there are definitely some camera angles that were decided by Disney and maturity ratings. You can barely tell Hercules is actively grinding on Burr in one scene. I think some of the shots downgraded the coolness of the double turntable stage thing.
Also, I’ve seen the memes about the Laurens/Hamilton love fest, but I had nothing to compare it to until I saw the movie. There were several moments, especially in My Shot, where I thought “ARE THEY ABOUT TO KISS!?”
Dumbledork if Laurens looked like that in real life, I’d kiss him too. His position on slavery and the sameness of blacks and whites is very appealing. It’s a testimony to his moral character.
One of my protest signs is in tribute to Laurens/Hamilton. One side says Amor Patria and the other says Rise Up. I’m really a history nerd at heart, lol.

I agree, but where you sit in the theater changes your experience too.
We saw the show twice in the theatre, once from rear orchestra, pretty much the same level as the actors, and from front row on the next level up. It was almost like seeing two different shows.
From level with the actors, seeing the turntables wasn't nearly as amazing as it was from higher up. DH wasn't even aware that there were two of them until we saw it the second time, but I think he was just more caught up in who was singing and what they were saying, and wasn't looking at the staging the first time.
The second half was so much better than the first. Although, DH finally started paying attention to what I was watching, and I had to tell him a bunch of the history so that took away from some of it.
This was the only way I was ever going to watch this, so I'm glad they released it on an easily accessible format.
Lol I love this response after reading this thread. I’ve never seen Hamilton or listened to the music and I have no plans to. But I have read about the play and some of its criticism, especially among Black people & revisionist history and Puerto Rican people in regards to how things were handled when it was done in Puerto Rico.
I didn’t want to be a Debbie downer and ask for people’s opinions on the critiques! But glad you shared your opinion, which seems different than most people’s on here

LOL! I still maintain that it was ok. I'm a little weirded out by the fanaticism surrounding it, but then again I can still belt out Phantom of the Opera lyrics with the best of them, so what do I know?
I saw it on Broadway with the original cast and a couple of touring productions. So good to see the originators of the roles back. They’re all fantastic and irreplaceable. So glad they did this recording.

100% agree with this! I was so afraid of missing something when I saw it live that I didn't tear my eyes away from the main action on the stage. Turns out, I missed a TON, which was evident when we watched it last night! I can't wait to watch again.
Not to mention the ability to eat pizza, adjust the volume as needed, use the restroom at will, and sit on my couch in yoga pants.
@@ We just watched it with the kids. I was kind of surprised DH wanted to watch it, because he doesn't usually go in for musicals. I have only heard one of the songs, so it was almost completely new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I want to watch it again or listen to the music again to get another feel for it.
DS (8) just sat there on his iPad asking when it was done. Toward the end, he asked, shocked, "Wait, he DIES??" Because it's being shown on Disney.
DD (13) has listened to the music, so she was all in, and at one point, sat up and asked "Why is everyone in this movie so HOT?" So, priorities. Can't say I disagree with her, though.

I can’t wait to have a dvd. I think it’s something I’ll play on regular repeat as a comfort movie like pride&pred .
I was unsuccessful in the ticket lottery in Denver, so I’ve never seen a live performance, I’ve only listed to the CDs a lot. It was strange to me, any part that was different from the soundtrack. Especially the 2nd half seems to have a lot of differences.
I kept getting goosebumps. It really is so great... genius. LMM of course, but also whoever choreographed and came up with rotating stage. That works so well in so many scenes, allowing actors to stand still in their moment but move your focus to another scene at the same time. I can’t imagine how complicated it was to rehearse all that dancing and acting on a floor that keeps moving.
I remember reading stuff about the double casting that made so much sense but now I forget why they did that. Can anyone clarify for me why DD played both Lafayette and Jefferson? And the other double roles too? Laurens/Hamilton’s son and Peggy/mistress?

I remember reading that he debated between playing the role of Hamilton or Burr. He likes Burrs role because of the Wait For It song. So he probably did the right thing, not being as strong of a singer wasn’t as important for the role of Hamilton.

The double-cast characters have something in common in relation to A. Hamilton.

Phantom is the WORST.
HTH.
Phantom would be amazing if they cut out 30% of the show. There's no reason for it to be that long.

I think you need to flip those percentages. If they preserved 30% of the show, cut 70%. Actually, maybe just keep music of the night and cut everything else. Like a single.

Phantom is just one long song. Like 3 hours long. One melody over and over and over....
Leslie Odom Jr. is the show. He deserved the Tony.
He's my favorite! Chris Jackson tearing up after One Last Time was just too much, remembering him singing that at the White House for Obama.
I saw Hamilton on Broadway in January 2017 and remember being floored that Javier Muñoz sounded better than LMM. But LMM's personality is what makes his performance amazing, even if it's not on the same technicality caliber as the rest of the cast.
Just finished watching with DH. We have heard the soundtrack once but that's it so this was great. I bought a month of D+ just for this. We enjoyed it. We both got very teared up in the second act sad scene. I agree that everyone was so amazing that LMM started to stand out as not as good near the end.
I like seeing the faces. My friend has local tickets pushed to 2022 so I will understand the story now. I saw Phantom live and had decent seats, but still could not see faces and emotions like the tv versions.

We've been fortunate to see it a few times on stage, but it's SO hard to catch everything that is going on! The editors did a great job piecing this together - I loved even seeing the overhead shots, closeups. I am super impressed and it still felt like I was seeing it in the theatre. Amazing!! I can't wait to watch again!
We missed Daveed on Broadway, so it was great to finally see him in his full performance! And Renee, Pip, Chris Jackson, Anthony, Jasmine - ahhhhhhh!
I got to watch it with a friend who not heard the soundtrack or seen it before, so it was really hard to not react too much! She was surprised that there was no talking, and that it moved so quickly. I had actually listened to the soundtrack before coming over so I would not be a bawling mess at the end, LOL!
I'm glad to see I'm not alone on LMM. I adore him and all he's created (just like Hamilton, ha ha ha) but I know there are other actors who portray the role better. I'm still sad they didn't do a London cast recording - that was where we saw it, and their Hamilton was truly so talented!
I will say I’m not a fanatic. We were lucky to see it in a small theater in PR, 4th row with Lin Manuel. It was definitely a great experience but at no point did I feel tearful.
I admit I thought this was going to be an actual movie! Did not realize it was a recording of a live performance lol. So, that was a bit of a surprise, but I enjoyed it. Cool to see them so close! I also love Leslie Odom jr! King George was so spitty!!
I do think a movie is planned for the future, similar to In the Heights. I know LMM was hoping to get the live show out there more before doing a movie, but now that this has been released, maybe they'll start to work on the movie :-)

Did you see any protestors or negativity when you went in PR? I remember reading about the pushback when it was first announced then I never followed up on it but recently read this article, so was wondering if people were actively protesting during the shows run. www.80grados.net/miranda-an-american-tragedy/
