Finally! Then our elementary phys Ed teacher, who is a huge fan of the team from Washington, will have to change his license plate to something other than “REDSKNS.” 🤮
Also, not a football fan at all, as evidenced by the fact that this post and the article taught me that the name of the team refers to Washington, D.C. and not the state.

Ha! I almost said “the team from Washington,” but went wit DC to avoid that confusion.
In the last season of Unbreakable Kimmy I am pretty sure I remember them joking about how they could not understand why the name had not yet changed. I do not understand the push back; changing names means everyone will buy all new stuff!

I think we all know that racism and white supremacy are the reason for the pushback.
I’m not sure that the revenue from fan gear will cover the cost of rebranding the stadium, web, and printed products, but honestly I think when you factor in their potentially loss of sponsorship by Nike and FedEx, it becomes economically a better decision to change the name. Sadly I think the decision to revisit is driven only by $$$$....
I'm from the DC area, I'm 42, and I remember staging a mock debate about changing the name in ELEMENTARY school. So, like, good for them to get with the 1980s?

P.s. fuck Dan Snyder
This has been a constant debate since the 60s. Apparently sometime in the 70s, the team president made some "concessions" to Native Americans objections and re-wrote some parts of the fight song to remove references to scalping, etc and said that the cheerleaders no longer had to wear the black braided wigs.
DH and I were just talking about this. I was flabbergasted that the cheerleaders wore fucking braided wigs with their uniforms. I thought he was full of shit until we googled a picture.
New name to be announced tomorrow according to the news.
I *think* (from what I just read) they're announcing that there will be a new name but they can't/won't announce it because the preferred name has to be negotiated due to copyright issues.
Wonder if Atlanta (MLB), Chicago (NHL) or Kansas City (NFL) are next?
A woman called into NPR also said that Norte Dame should also change their name/mascot.
I had this conversation with the students in my advisory last winter. To a person, everyone in the room felt differently about this (though they agreed that the mascot was a gross stereotype and should be changed) because Irish people are white. It was a fascinating window into young minds for me.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”

And although there was a significant period of time in which Irish people were discriminated against, they are not presently a marginalized group in this country.

Yup.

I just thought it was an interesting trend that, at 14, they could articulate the difference there.

This is actually a huge deal. The owner has been very explicit that he was never going to change the name, so it's not nothing that they have officially announced they are retiring it. There is apparently some trademark issue that needs to be worked out and the reason they cannot announce the new name.

I saw a tweet (I can't find it now, sorry) saying that apparently some realtor in VA has trademarked a TON of alternative Washington team names so they may be dealing with that lol.

I acknowledge this point. However, all the news last night said this was going to happen, and then it happened with no additional information. LOL!
