DS2 really wants a Rescue Bots birthday cake. He’s turning 4. We were going to have a party for him at the local splash pad and that’s not happening (and it would have been the first time he had a party). Anyway, I really want to give him the cake he wants but they don’t have rescue bots as an option at our local chain supermarkets. A simple paper cake-topper from Etsy is $20 which I think is too much for a paper decoration. I don’t want to pay $45 to have a cake made from a bakery for just the four of us to eat, so that leaves doing it myself.
Would you just Clorox and then wash his recupe not toys and stick them on a cake? Will that be a total mess afterwards?
I have all the tools too do a buttercream decoration but without a pan, I don’t have a picture to follow and I’m not artsy at all.
Is there an easy-ish way for me make a Rescue bots cake ? All the ideas on Pinterest look so hard!
I'd totally wash his toys and put them on the cake. Done and done! One year for my DS' birthday a lightning mcqueen toy car came on his cake from Safeway. If they do it, why not you?
The Rescue Bots are solid plastic, right? If so, I’d just run them through the top rack of the dishwasher, or just soak in warm soapy water before and after.

Basically...I think there may be a few metal bits holding them together.
Totally use toys, either ones he has or new ones. Works great!!!! I have done this several times (Octonauts, Lego Harry Potter, Star Wars, tractors, and plastic dinosaurs)!
We have a plastic toy on top of DS's cake most years. It's the most cost effective as we already own it, and IMO looks better. Don't Clorox it. Just wash it down with dish soap.
This from Pinterest would be super simple to do. One tip and color block the cake.
If he has a favorite rescue bot you could do that too like with Boulder have a pile of smashed Oreos he’s pushing.
I totally used toys on ds’s bday cake and it was adorable. I just washed in hot soapy water first. I made this one for ds and used smashed Oreos for the track and full Oreos for tires around the edge. It was super easy.
Sorry you aren't getting to have his first friend party.
I think using the toys on the cake is a great idea.
I will also say that I've almost always done cupcakes for my kids, with cupcake topppers that I print and cut out at home - either free ones I find on pinterest, or ones I made using images I find online. Here's an example; the cupcake toppers are on page 8 of this file. You cut them out and tape them to toothpicks. www.5mcreations.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/rescue-bot.pdf
I’ve used toys for cake decor every time I’ve made a bday cake for my kids. You can also print something on paper and attach them to sticks. This year I cut out a logo from a gift box and put that on the center of the cake. Obviously not edible but it looked good in photos with the toys around it. I like using toys with wheels so I can make the cake an age/number shape with a road or track on it. I’ve also had the grocery bakery do a background for a different theme and added my own toys, ie, City scene, grassy scene, ocean scene, etc.
Covid cake. Definitely not my best or most creative, but we used what we had. Cardboard logo, toys DS picked as his favorites and some other cake decor stuff we had. I also like using the candy letters for messages because my frosting writing never looks good.

I agree with wiping it down. DS LOVED rescue bots at that age. I wouldn't put them in the dishwasher. There are too many cracks and crevices and I'd be worried water would get trapped somewhere.
For even better results - use new toys! I did a CARS cake for my son. I did a racetrack and put on a car that he had been wanting for a long time. He loved the cake and then his face was priceless when he saw the new car.
