We have a duvet with cover when it's cold. When it's reasonably warmish, we switch to a very light quilt. I prefer the duvet as we can wash the cover more regularly. We have to take the quilt to the dry cleaners to get it cleaned. And my H doesn't like using a top sheet. So, it's expensive and annoying.
We use comforters. We don't share though. I have one comforter that I use. My H on the other hand uses 4, yes 4. I bought him a weighted blanket and he never even took it out of the package.

I'd like to use a comforter, at least in the winter, but my H likes flannel sheets in the winter, which then makes me too hot to use a comforter. So we use a quilt year round. But not a dry-clean only type of quilt. An "on super sale at Bed Bath and Beyond" one that I can toss in the washer whenever it needs it.
Sharing with H? Lighter weight quilt, with an extra fleece blanket layered under it in the winter.
H is a freaking radiator and down tends to be too much, even in winter. Plus when he gets hot, he kicks all the blankets everywhere, and even with corner ties, the down comforter always slid around in the duvet cover and was a pain. I finally gave up when we upgraded from a queen to a king, and passed our down comforter down to DD when she got a full size big girl bed.
Even at king size, I have been able to wash the quilt and the fleece blanket at home, one at a time. So that addresses a lot of the washability that the duvet was intended to solve.
Comforter with duvet in the winter, light quilt in the summer. I'm always cold and could sleep with a comforter year-round, but my husband is a furnace.

I have a down comforter with a duvet for winter, but I top that with a coverlet/quilt. Partly that's because taking the duvet off the comforter is a pain and it's easier to wash the coverlet. (3 cats, people. Cat hair. Lots of cat hair. Lots.) However, I also like some weight with my blankets, so the coverlet helps with that. (Edited: The duvet is a simple flannel cover, nothing fancy and nothing I'd use as a decorative element to the bed.)
In summer, I put the comforter away and just use the coverlet.
I also have an electric mattress pad when I really want to get the chill off.

Quilt (a solid color with decorative stitching) and a down-free box stitch blanket underneath (looks comforter- like, but is way thinner). If it's really freezing in winter, I add another blanket.
I voted comforter with duvet. But it's really starting to annoy me. We're due for replacement (13 years with this duvet, which has held up pretty well, but now has a hole in it) and I'm on the fence with what to do..
I usually switch to a light weight quilt/coverlet thing for summer, but I bought a duvet cover last fall that I like so much I haven't wanted to take it off the bed except to wash it Plus, we keep it fairly cool at night (we all sleep so much better that way) so I like heavier covers anyway.

Wahoo - just discovered that our quilt fits in our new washer and dryer (didn't in our old one), so that means I don't have to take it to the dry cleaners and can wash it more often. That is fabulous, especially with a puppy who sleeps with us.
