I like her. I prefer Harris or Demings. I’ve heard a lot of chatter regarding Karen Bass, but not really positive. Her comments on Fidel Castro when he died are obviously not a good thing down here. Not only will Cubans take offense but so will Venezuelans and Nicaraguans who have very direct and personal history with Castro and his close friends Ortega and Chavez (now Maduro).

I hope that, if she’s selected, people look at her record. It’s unquestionably a comment made out of ignorance, but she’s done of a lot of really great things.
No candidate is going to have a flawless background. It makes me so nervous that something like this would turn people off so much, they’d vote for Trump.

Yes exactly.I can’t comment on her comment about Castro, but should be taken in to account as important for certain people. But Harris is a former prosecutor and Demings is a former police officer. I swear to god if either of them are the VP pick in today’s climate, omg.

I agree. But knowing my city and how politics works here, that’s a big deal. It’s also a big deal that we are seeing people who would otherwise never vote dem lean towards Biden. Something like this makes it harder. I know it seems minimal but in this area there is a really really big sensitivity to anything seen as friendly to Castro.

I totally understand why Cubans are sensitive to this. I would be too. But I think there is a clear difference between Trump/Pence and Biden/pretty much anyone. A comment like this is nothing in comparison to Trump’s offenses. We have children in cages, secret police snatching people off the streets, and 140,000+ people dead due largely to his incompetence.
I hope/wish he picks someone under 60. If we want to bring up someone who's electable in 2024 and 2028 it's not going to be someone 70 years old, and then 74 in 2028. (She's currently 66.)
Otherwise, she's an okay pick, I think. I don't know enough about her (yet) to determine otherwise. She's from LA, CA so that may play into it as well. He's already got a lock on CA and may need to consider someone not coastal. I keep thinking on that, although it's likely not as important as I seem to place it. At least she's not a "coastal elite" which would be Kamala's issue. (Dad was a mail carrier and mom was a SAH. Totally middle class bona fides.)

So much this. Someone who is not eligible for Medicare. PLEASE.
I had never heard of her before this post. A quick review of her voting history tells me she is solidly democratic, pretty far left and very pro-union.
I don't like unions in healthcare, that is not news here. But Trump stole a lot of union votes. A Biden/Bass ticket could get those back. She has also voted and cosponsored several pieces of legislation that advance causes of concern to Black Americans right now. Since a lot of Black voices aren't crazy about Kamala and a Black Female on the ticket could really help the Democratic vote, Bass could be a real contender.
I need to go research how she compares to Stacey Abrams, Keisha Lance Bottoms, Susan Rice, other Black women on his shortlist.
Hilary herself picked a younger running mate for balance. Usually there is an age disparity between President and VP.
There is also the thinking that if you pluck someone from relative obscurity, pick someone who who has time to use that exposure to grow something. But since VP is usually a dead end job, I don't think it matters as much.
I don't know that we want to put all of our future POTUS eggs in the next VP basket anyway. Biden's going to have a lot of shit to clean up if he's elected and if he doesn't do it well then his VP will have that associated with her so maybe it's better to focus on other young and up and coming Dems for 2024 or 2028.
It can be difficult to find to find good, experienced politicians under the age of 50. Kamala Harris isn't super young either, she'll be 56 in October. Obama was an anomaly.

I am mostly fine with Karen Bass as a VP pick. I like so much about her. I understand her Castro comments as something that is an impediment for her, but like someone else said (can't remember) all the VP candidates have some issue and the fact that Bass has not worked to incarcerate or worked in the judiciary side of government that needs immense reform might be great. I do still like and prefer Harris - mostly b/c I'm more familiar with her, not because of much else, so I think that means I need to learn more about Bass' long career in public service and her roots from Civil Rights Era on.

I don’t have a problem with her age. It feels ageist to harp on it. Plenty of powerhouse women (Pelosi, RBG) are much older. The average age in the Senate is pushing 62 — we can debate the implications of that, but she’d hardly be an anomaly on the Hill.
I guess my feelings depend on what we’re trying to solve for. Are we trying to rally the base or bring in suburban swing voters? I think she accomplishes both and neither at the same time. On the one hand, she has left-wing bonafides but some of the comments on this thread make me think it’s not enough for the base. And while I don’t think she’d be a turn-off for suburbanites, I’m not sure what she delivers either.
I’ve come to a point where I just want him to choose so we can move on with this shit show. He’s got numerous quality options who are strategic in different ways.
That being said, my money is on Demmings. I think he wants to take Florida and she’s an asset for that.

I honestly would be excited about any number of choices that have been floated. The only one I wasn’t excited about at all was Klobuchar, and maybe Whittmer, but any of the rest we’ve heard are being considered would send me over the moon.
