And Bass would probably name a VP before it would ever get to Pelosi.
No my thought was if both Biden and bass die unexpectedly.
Only if POTUS and the VP died at the same time, like if Marine One crashed with both of them in it (which I’m pretty sure happens rarely for just this reason).
Even if that did happen the Speaker would be able to appoint their own VP.

It can be difficult to find to find good, experienced politicians under the age of 50. Kamala Harris isn't super young either, she'll be 56 in October. Obama was an anomaly.
Dude - 56 is 11 years from retirement age.
::shaking my cane::
Harris could do two terms as VP and two terms as president and she’d still be younger than Biden is today.
This brings me to a question of Presidential succession that I had to research as a reminder.
I wondered if Biden and Bass both passed suddenly, and Pelosi become President, would Grassley because VP?
That would be quite the pair to try to lead the country!
Thankfully the interwebz confirmed that the president then appoints a VP which has to be approved by both house and senate.
These are all important considerations in having 2 older candidates on the ticket, for sure.
And Bass would probably name a VP before it would ever get to Pelosi.
Yeah, Bass would have an opportunity to name a VP. Ditto if Bass and Biden both die and Pelosi is named President because of succession. She would pick a VP to serve as well.
The problem is the VP that they would pick has to be confirmed by the Senate. Can you imagine McConnell and crew letting anybody pass confirmation? Or even be heard? (See: Merrick Garland.) That's why it's just as important, if not more so, to turn the Senate. #preachingtothechoir
With the exception of Obama, all of our presidents since 1993 have been born in the same year. I just think that’s ridiculous. I thought Warren was too old and Hillary’s age did not excite me either because I remember that my realization about Clinton and Bush and Trump all being born in ‘46 came about during the 2016 race. And now Biden is even older. Stop the madness!
I honestly would be excited about any number of choices that have been floated. The only one I wasn’t excited about at all was Klobuchar, and maybe Whittmer, but any of the rest we’ve heard are being considered would send me over the moon.
Klob is out, right? I think she announced that she was no longer in contention.

Yes and I think Whittmer too.
I really hope we find out this week. I want to get amped up.
Confession time: I said this for snark. I had no idea who she is. I looked her up this morning and see she’s a really interesting and capable Black woman (a PA!). Nary a “Karen” in sight, although I can see her making fun of it the way Obama made fun of “thanks, Obama.” lol
I see the Castro thing as messy now that I read it, not a great start to her Vice Presidency.
She’s from CA which I don’t think works in her favor or Biden’s favor.
I think Duckworth is probably a better choice based on the CA and Castro things alone but I adore Duckworth so this is likely not an objective analysis.
Do you think Duckworth’s service would sway some rah-rah America voters?

Karen Bass was on Maddow last night. I only watched a couple minutes then realized I recognized her from following the Congressional Black Caucus Facebook page.
I think recent history has shown us that an unknown VP pick does not help the ticket. Dan Quayle was the last VP nominee with little nation-wide exposure who was on a winning ticket. Look at Sarah Palin and Tim Kaine (I liked him but he didn't bring anything to the HRC ticket). Actually, the TK pick shows you can't play it safe. I think Karen Bass would be a strong VP pick, but the Dems need more than strong. Stacey Abrams brings star power and grass roots organizing efforts. I do think Tammy Duckworth could hep persuade some "rah rah America" types to the Biden ticket if they are otherwise on the fence or thought of not voting. I'm afraid Kamala Harris would turn off progressive voters (and white racist voters but I'm not as concerned about turning them off). So, I guess right now I think either Abrams or Duckworth would be the best choice.

how much do VPs ever affect a ticket? Did anyone vote for Obama because of Biden? Or Trump because of Pence? Or Bush for Cheney? Or Clinton for Gore? Would Hilary have won with a bigger name?

I don’t know, but I am pretty positive Palin tanked McCain.

Without a doubt. My take is that a strong or mediocre running mate has little impact, a bad choice will tank a campaign.
This is also not a normal election though. I expect the VP to make a huge difference so this is not the year to play it safe.
I feel the opposite. The share of undecided voters is so much smaller. I think both sides are poised for turnout. I think do no harm is the best option.

I know there aren’t many undecideds but I’m thinking more about driving turnout. I’m afraid playing it safe won’t turn enough people out. Trump and his shittiness alone aren’t going to turn people out. It should, but I’m afraid it won’t.

agree with Velar Fricative, I think some years you pick the candidate that won't hurt. This year, Biden needs to pick someone who will really help the ticket by driving voter turnout.
Joe Biden was uncharacteristically tight-lipped on Tuesday about the final stretch of his search for a vice president. But the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee seemed prepared to talk about at least one leading contender: California Sen. Kamala Harris.
As he took questions from reporters on Tuesday, Biden held notes that were captured by an Associated Press photographer. Harris’ name was scrawled across the top, followed by five talking points.
“Do not hold grudges.” “Campaigned with me & Jill.” “Talented.” “Great help to campaign.” “Great respect for her.”

Ugh I feel like it'll be so tone def to pick Kamala Harris. I don't know the "right" answer, but I hope whatever happens doesn't tank Biden's lead by essentially doing nothing right now and letting trump tank himself.

Good point. A VP disaster or misstep can bring down a candidate.

Yep exactly. Obviously there’s no guarantee that Biden is going to win but trump is shooting himself in the foot right now. Obviously no one is perfect but there’s no need to pick someone with more "well-known" controversies. I honestly don’t think he should pick anyone who ran for president. I’m hoping they realize that they shouldn’t just pick a Black woman to be the token.
I actually think that there's some strategy behind picking Harris. If Trump is trying to be the "law and order" pick, she's the option on the other side with actual law and order experience.

Since when were we trying to appeal to trump and his base? Have you not been paying attention to what’s going on? Harris has long been criticized, by Black people, for being a prosecutor even before this "new" uprising. I like her in general, I read her book and "get" how she tried to run things as a prosecutor, but still. Ugh.
