Susan Rice would also be great. Just get ready for Benghazi all over again.
I think he won’t pick her because of this and he won’t pick Tammy D because R’s will challenge her too. Even though they’re wrong, Biden has such a huge lead right now, praying it stays, that his team doesn’t want noise even if it’s fake. It’s why I think he’ll pick Harris.
If I had to make a best guess right now, I think he’s going with Duckworth. She would be very hard for the Trump team to crucify as a veteran who gave two limbs in service of our country. She would be appealing to moderate Republicans who would like her history as a veteran and that she is from the Midwest, but she also is loved by Democrats, brings some diversity to the ticket and doesn’t have any major drawbacks/skeletons from what I have seen.
I'm pretty sure that Trump's already come after her, but I don't have the receipts to prove it.
He's been letting his camp do it for him. He retweeted Tucker Carlson's "she's unpatriotic and hates America" but I'm not having a lot of luck. There are too many (so far) of her slamming back about the Carlson tweet. She's been under the radar until very recently so he's had no reason to single her out. He's probably still figuring out how to get to her. He's had trouble going after powerful women in the past.
Well, it sounds like we can give up on the idea that Biden sees himself as grooming a successor or is even considering stepping down for his second term. Apparently a big part of Bass’s appeal for him is that she has no long term presidential ambitions of her own. www.nytimes.com/2020/07/31/us/politics/joseph-biden-vice-president.html
That really pisses me off. while I don’t think the VP is generally an effective stepping stone to the presidency, precluding that option is just a shitty move coming from someone who was VP so he could do just that. Combined with the whole push for a woman of color it smacks of ‘women of color can have a little power, as a treat’ (this discusses it but leaves out the whole aspect of race which is very much present in that patronizing move. www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/07/28/opinion/biden-vice-president-woman.amp.html

Besides the obvious (woman, dem, poc, new mom), what would R's go after Duckworth for?

Not the PP, so there may be other things, but the fact that she was born outside of the US? I think the question of her eligibility was settled with Ted Cruz, who had a similar situation (born to a citizen outside of US), or maybe John McCain? Either way, it seemed settled when it applied to a R man, but that may not stop people from coming after her. The way they questioned Obama.

I’m wondering too. The Rs will challenge anyone he picks.
Duckworth seems like someone they’ll have a hard time finding things to go after for.

Oh, place of birth is all? What a boring scandal for 2020.

frankly, I expect the president will do disability shaming. He likes war veterans who don’t get shot down.

She has spoken before that some don't consider her a "real" veteran because was deployed as part of the national guard and not full time active duty. It was in context of her stating that she didn't like people trying to out do each other (well, you were only in the green zone, I went out on missions. women don't see "real" combat like men do, etc). All service members are important.

Yes and also Tucker had no problem going after her a few weeks ago. She is also not well known same as Karen Bass. There is no way they’re picking someone whom the general population doesn’t have a clue who they are. Harris and the others on the debate stage pass that test. They have name recognition - Warren more than others I’d say.
Also I think 45 team is anticipating the VP pick so they can begin the war since they aren’t doing well in the polls against Biden, they need ammunition and that’ll be the VP pick to tear apart and again it’s why I think Biden will not go with unknowns. It won’t help him and I think the Biden team does think about 45’s strategy sadly.
I haven't been around in forever, but I really don't think it should be anyone over the age of 60. Young people have been so underrepresented in the halls of power, it's disgusting. Did you watch that facebook/twitter/whatever hearing? The people at the top are so out of touch it's revolting to me.
We will never ever be in touch with what we need until we see more representation of people under the age of 60 in the halls of power. We just won't. It's depressing to even think about.
I also took Biden's no presidential ambitions slightly different even though I'm not into a 66yo VP. I think he knows he has an absolute shit show to clean up and if he isn't going to run in 2024 (I'd be surprised, the presidency ages you like no other), I think he thinks someone outside of his administration might be better positioned to win in 2024. I mean there is a huge risk if you are Kamala Harris to take the VP job, even if it means you'd have a good path to run in 2024.

I don't think most of them do. Certainly most of them have never heard her speak.

I think most people don’t know any senators/reps beyond their own, with the exception of those who at one time ran for POTUS.
Exactly. A little over a year and a half ago a friend and I were talking about how we hoped Harris would run for POTUS. Another friend, who follows politics more than the average person but isn’t like, nerdy about it, didn’t know who Harris was or why we should be excited for her.
I bet most people don’t know more than maybe twenty current politicians, and I think that’s generous. If they know more than that, they either only know names and nothing else, or they geek out over politics.
Only picking people well-known on the national level limits our choices dramatically, and is terrible when you consider how many people didn’t know the current big names a year or so ago.

People can’t even name a continent outside of North America let alone senators haha.
I would consider my partner smarter than me and he actually reads the news more than me, but we did that NYT picture quiz a few months ago and it took him forever to remember Kamala Harris’s name (he’s not a US citizen but I gave him a hard time about it!)
I knew who Tim Kain was because I used to live in VA, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t know who Biden was when I voted for Obama.

Biden will be a one term president, its just math. Its not good politically to admit that in advance of an election.
That doesn't change the bad faith of seeking out a a woman of color specifically because her ambitions don't include higher office and her unlikeliness to run for the presidency. It smacks of picking someone who knows her place. "WOC are perfect for supporting roles where they work hard for other people, drum up support in their community and make me look good. But don't give her real power."

I never thought it was a good idea for Biden to imply that he is picking the Democratic nominee for 2024. Even if his plan is to serve for only 1 term, the primary process has to be followed and the party gets to pick the nominee for 2024 - not Biden and his inner circle.
If Biden does win in 2020 and the Democratic party leaders put all their support behind his VP for the 2024 nomination, there will be lots of people in the party crying foul. We need remember what we learned from 2016 which means a completely transparent process to select the presidential nominee. There cannot be an assumption that the VP automatically gets the nod.

Their is a difference between not anointing the 2024 candidate and specifically choosing someone because you think she won't be in the running.

I suppose, but I wonder if Biden et al are trying to not choose someone who has ambition to be president because they are concerned it will appear to be anointing someone - which would hurt their long-term chances. They could have changed their approach since Biden made his vow to select a WOC. Did he specifically say he was picking someone to follow him as president. I don't remember exactly what he said.

But I guess I'm the only one bothered by that.
It seems like the V.P. role in general has typically been viewed for someone "not ambitious." That’s probably not the right word, but you do want someone loyal to you and not with their completely own agenda. I don’t think that’s a new thought process when deciding who will be your V.P.
Does Kamala Harris want to run for president again? If so, then this probably isn’t the right role for her. Same with Stacy Abrams who has definitely said she wants to run for president in the future.
It doesn’t seem like he specifically decided to pick a woc in order to get someone "less ambitious" but that’s just my reading of things based on what the V.P. pick has traditionally been.
I also think the Democratic Party needs to be smart. Hopefully in 2024 things won’t be a shit show and we can have a better and fair process for finding our next president.

This whole process has been an utter shit show from the start, what with the "here ya go little ladies" tokenism of saying he'd pick a woman as VP. The story last week about Kamala being "too ambitious" and not knowing her place around old white men (fuck you forever, Chris Dud!) put such a cloud over the whole process. And now this story about Warren being "super smart and all, but gosh! There probably isn't really a place for her in the cabinet." The two stories basically back-to-back will be the goddamn death of me.
Biden needs to surround himself with better people. His surrogates are out there flapping their gums like a gossipy tween, and it's not doing him any favors.
Also! Biden has been running for President since NINETEEN EIGHTY SEVEN. Miss me with this bullshit about not wanting anyone on the ticket who is looking to run herself. What's good enough for the goose, buddy.
