sdlaura, school starts the next week, so this is basically it. I haven't been able to locate two houses anywhere near each other. I have an email in to one to see if they'll be willing to accommodate extra guests, but who knows.
I’m sorry k3am! We’re going on vacation next week and one family dropped out. Luckily we were able to find a smaller house nearby that was still available.
But now one of the three remaining families wants everyone above age 2 to wear masks for the entire week in the house. I view us as a pod/quaranteam for the week - we all come from similarly low case areas and all adults have been WFH. Only interaction has been some outdoor activities for kids under 8. And I just don’t see the point in all doing masks if at least half the time we’re eating/drinking/in the pool, etc. I am a huge fan of masks - I just think it’s unrealistic to wear them all the time for a week vacation in our house. I’m hoping this doesn’t ruin the trip.
I did book a beach house for fall break.. assuming fall break happens. If it doesn't, I'll just pull her out of what I'm sure is going to be a really amazing distance learning program.
I’m sorry k3am! A different location isn’t possible?
I’m always jealous of people in the Bay Area because I feel like there are so many fun places you can easily drive to. In San Diego you have to cross an international border if you go south, there’s ocean west and desert East, and if you go north you have to go through LA or Riverside, which isn’t fun...
sdlaura, I'm with you on that one. We discussed our trip with our friends on the boat and thankfully we're all on the same page risk wise. They are also okay with us flying since we will be in masks and there are hardly any people on our flights.
I got a call from my Mom last night that my Dad fell out of a tree and was in the ER. He broke his leg and they put him in a walking boot. He goes to the Ortho today to find out the treatment plan but don't think it will require surgery. My mom is having knee surgery next week and will be out for 6 weeks. Now they're both going to be hobbling around the house.
mellym - depending on where the break is, I would highly recommend a knee scooter. DH had one when he tore his Achilles and had to have surgery To repair. It was a lifesaver!
mellym , sdlaura , we were driving, so at least we're not losing out on travel expenses also.
I've searched AirBNB, VRBO, a handful of rental companies for just about anywhere in CA. For the whole group, if we wanted to be together in something decent, we'd have to drive to LA/San Diego/Arizona, and none of us want to do an 7-11 hour drive.
The hardest part is that everything is closed. DS is 4 and lazy, so an okay cabin with only the great outdoors for entertainment is asking for trouble. So basically unless it comes with a pool or is close enough to a beach/lake/river/whatever to walk, there's not a lot of interest.
Like.. there are some houses in the same area that theoretically would work. But if you're at the house 90% of the time, and it's 95-100, no pool, and the beach is 30-45 mins away (with questionable parking availability) what do you do all day? In my house? They just.. fight or watch TV. They can do that for free here.
k3am , I'm sorry that is terrible. I would totally send sad kid faces. I suspect my kids would be more bummed than I would be.
DH and I were supposed to be in the caribbean for a belated wedding anniversary trip. MIL was still willing to take the kids for a long weekend, and we headed to the cabin up north, which was nice. Which was nice, but not the same.
I've also never seen such demand for rentals... my guess is that it's two-fold.. school is starting soon, so it's the last opportunity for a lot of people (which usually doens't cause this much of a problem), combined with the fact that people who normally would have taken "big" out of state/country vacations are now stuck localish, increasing demand.

One of my colleagues, who is scheduled for vacation last two weeks of August, says there’s absolutely nothing available to rent on the Jersey Shore or in Cape Cod (the two places his family was looking). That’s a pretty large search area and he says they’ll probably just be staying home.
