Ok so I have dark (poop) brown hair. And I know that hair dye adds pigment, so lighter dye on my hair would do nada. BUT.. my GRAY hair could in theory pick up pigment from a light brown or caramel single-color dye (if left to process for long enough), right? Would this give a highlighted effect? I feel like that would be too easy, but in my head it seems like it should work.... please burst my bubble.
Also tell me not to cut my own hair using brad mondo's guide. To be fair it involves straightening my hair first which is... not likely to happen.

I think that might work.
You should try it because if it doesn't, then you just need to wait a week or two and dye it again with the next darker shade.
Tip: keep hair color on your grays for the maximum amount of time because it takes longer to cover them. I use just a drugstore box color and I keep it on my hair for 45 minutes.
Gosh, “in theory”? My mom dyed her own hair when I was a teenager and we were on vacation, and the grey/white hairs all turned hot pink. I’ve been scared ever since! I do, desperately want to cut my own hair and wish I could trust the dying!

I dye it myself all the time, it's just trying a lighter color to just takebto my grays that would be new. And that's so funny about your mom! I wouldn't be mad if that was my result haha

Yeah, I would be careful of the color you choose (this advice is inspired by ponybaloney)--and find one that is as close to your current hair color as possible in terms of the tone and color (gold, reddish, etc.) and then get one or two shades lighter.
I was told by my hair colorist that gives me foils once a year that the ash colors don't cover gray as well so don't pick those.

I have been doing semi-permanent dye at the salon, then tried box dye at home last month. I did do my whole head, not just my roots or anything.
Semi-permanent is supposed to last 24 washes, which is about right. I got a color close to my own and it looks perfectly fine. Worst case, if you don't love the color, semi-permanent is a slightly less "scary" thing to try. It doesn't disappear after the 24 washes or anything, but will fade slightly.

Two FB friends (one is my stylist) have been posting color corrections since they have opened back for business. The photos I have seen have scared me enough to never use box dye.

This is what I've been doing for the last 10 years since my greys got so out of control (at 29!) that I was spending $$$$ at the salon. I've mostly used Natural Instincts, and it turns my greys pretty close to my original color, then very slowly fades to gold so it looks less like I've got a line of grey at my part and more like I've got highlights as it grows out.
