I mostly want to do monograms and personalizations. Would need to be able to handle thicker fabrics like bags. Any recs? It's so overwhelming. I've stalked a few used options on FB marketplace but I'm nervous about problems a used machine could have.
Would like something no more than $500 since I'm a beginner.
I have the entry level brother that was $399 (I think) we I got it. It’s only 4x4, and I wish it was bigger, but otherwise, I’ve been happy with it for 10+ years. I think it’s about the only one under $500.
it does regular sewing, too. But I leave it dedicated to embroidery. I have other machines for sewing.

I started with a PE770 6 years ago. It was enough machine for 6 years, 5 million stitches. It's been a GREAT machine. 5x7 hoop max. The 770 has been replaced by the PE800, with a color screen upgrade. I occasionally couldn't tell what the file shape was on my tiny LCD on the 770, so that's a good upgrade. They are a bit more than your budget, especially right now. I agree with winecat, used could be a great option.
I recently purchased a Brother VM5100 and I'm pretty excited. It sews nicely, but I bought it for the embroidery. It's also discontinued, but I got it for a great price.
