It’s so frustrating that he is 6.4 lbs and 10 months away from magically being ADHD. When he must not be, now.
I had the appt. The psychologist said there was nothing she could do at this age besides a rohrshach. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. Nobody uses those. What a joke.
Try a Conners Early Childhood. Or a BASC-young child. Or ask the child-he will tell you he wants to use his calm down tools but “I forget”. Or interview me about the two times in the last 6 months that he ran away from me in a parking lot and was almost hit by a car. Or that at the age of 5 he needs to be contained in a grocery cart.
Funny how schools are able to “determine educational disabilities” at this age but a paid outside evaluator is completely unable.
Have I ever mentioned that I took a half day off work to take him to a new therapist who suggested I use an AIR HORN?

campermom- I would pay OOP for the children’s hospital to evaluate. My BFF, who is a special ed teacher, had to do that for her son’s learning disabilities and ADHD. He’s a different kid on meds.
I think people who don’t work with the under 6 crowd just... can’t work with the under 6 crowd.

campermom, I'm so sorry. You are an incredible advocate for your son and you know what's right. Don't give up. When I tried to get DD2 diagnosed with ADHD, we couldn't get a diagnosis because it wasn't impacting her enough academically. The parent survey and the pediatrician survey and the appointment with a children's hospital specialist all pointed to it, but the teacher survey showed that she was totally fine academically so we couldn't get a 504. I wish I had kept pushing, but it was in the middle of dealing with the divorce and that mess too and I just couldn't deal with one more thing, unfortunately. Now we just muddle through with our own accommodations and try not to get too frustrated.
Long time lurker here -- I don't express myself well in writing, so I spend my time reading and learning from everyone else here.
I am a mom to an 8 year old ADHD/anxiety boy. He was diagnosed at 4 with ADHD -- we started meds then. His diagnosis came from a child psychologist. She was the only one in the area that would test at his age. Technically, she didn't accept insurance, but did file the paperwork so that we could be reimbursed from insurance. Is that a possibility for you?
Also, we had some success with using Spark for caffeine to help with ADHD impulse control before starting meds. We decided we needed something more consistent and he started on Quillivant XR.
He used his hands to solve his problems in school -- hitting, kicking, etc. and is now on 3 meds. 1 for ADHD, 1 for anxiety, and 1 that is used for both but really helps with his aggressive outbursts.
campermom - I’m sorry for everything that you’re going through. DD1 was diagnosed later - she was almost 10 when we got the official ADHD diagnosis. 6 months prior her neuropsych testing revealed severe executive functioning deficits, but no ADHD. Her previous therapist and her current therapist both disagreed.
So we went through another round of testing over summer. Insurance covered the “medical” portion of the testing, but I had to pay OOP for the academic. I’m annoyed that it’s 2 months later and I still don’t have the results, but I guess there are extenuating circumstances in the dr’s personal life.
I know it will be expensive, but I definitely think it’s worth doing so that you can get a proper diagnosis. You may be able to find a way to appeal with your insurance. I struggled with getting them to pay for DD1’s meds. Eventually they covered part of the monthly cost. $96 is better than $275 every month.
