It just kind of sprang up and the leaves are pretty and it's in an okay spot so I left it, but I'm wondering what it is and how big it is likely to get. Any ideas?
Thanks guys...sorry I was lazy, the photos weren't updating from my phone to my computer so I just posted the one that did. Here are more. To answer your questions...
- I don't have any plant identifiers on my phone. I tried to do one online but it didn't seem to work with a picture. Most of the information-based ones I think stall out -- it asks me if it's got an oval leaf or a multi-lobe leaf and it seems to have mostly oval with just a few that are multi-lobe? I tried to take a good picture of that. - I think it's been there at least a year but I think it's shot up dramatically -- I think it was maybe 4 feet max a year ago and now it's at least 10 feet. It looks like it might have a bud right at the end of every branch -- I guess I'll see if it flowers? I would think that I would have noticed if it flowered last year, but it would have been right at the end of our construction so maybe not? - I can't imagine that it's a rhododendron, unless there's a much more giant version than I'm used to seeing? I'll look up sassafrass. Here's some more pics. It's got like a cool curvy trunk, although it's hard to photograph because it's right up against the fence -- which may cause problems if it is going to end up huge, because it is both right up against the fence/sidewalk and also underneath our big ash tree:
(The full tree - it got super tall in no time!):
(tiny buds at tips of branches):
(both oval and multi-lobe leaves on the same branch):
There is a free app called PictureThis - Plant identifier and we use it to identify plants and trees. I haven’t used it a ton but whenever we use it and then do research later to verify what the app told us, it has been correct.
